Something to be said about build quality that a fairly new Renault Twingo has more rattles than a 2004 Diahatsu. Don't get me wrong I am on my second Renault Kadjar but it looks to me like the Twingo was built down to a budget. I'd say rust issues aside the YRV is probably going to be around in the future as a collectable.
I remember looking at one of the YRV back in the day .. but I was buying a house at the time and couldn't afford it. As I recall they were Toyota engine and gearboxes 👍👍
Used to own one of those YRV turbo’s, it came from Germany so had the Gtti badging on it. Very fun when on boost, and rather quick from a stand-still…plenty of giggles and upsets gapping ‘real’ cars from the stoplights. But cornering…that’s not it’s strongsuit, it is quite bad at that part actually….real bad handling through the twisties when you up the speeds, and always bracing with the legs to keep you from downright sliding right off the seat. Also, gearbox is fun but the converter will crap out fairly soon when regularly shifting under full load. And then there is the rust-issue, a big issue on all of them!
Up GTI is a smaller Golf4 with the usual very restricting VW traction control, killing all the fun. Only deactivated by pulling the ABS fuse. Too bad because I really like the dimensions. Seems like Mazda is the only econobox brand that has unrestricting traction control on basic models.
You should keep the YRV... modify it, big wheels lowered suspension, silly exhaust, chameleon wrap... would it be awful? yes! would it be good fun? also, yes!
James i forgot to say the YRV Turbo had Daihatsu uk had a recall on some the rear Anti Roll strut could break so they reinforced it mine had been done already.
My vote would be for the Daihatsu. As i once owned the Charade GTI for 12 years. Still miss it tbh. A Shame when Daihatsu pulled out of the UK many years ago
YRV for me too, but minus the turbo transfers (Wolf in sheeps......The Twingo is far too obvious!), purely to pee off the souped up Gary Boys in the outside lane at the lights for the occasional bit of middle aged mischief and amusement! Easy to park too (Never been good at parking cars, despite a 28 year HGV1 driving career!). Cheers James 👍
The gearbox is a cvt hence the smooth changes. Originally would of been a stock car and they were converted to turbo spec in the uk by dealers apparently . Shame daihatsu are no longer here in the uk. They made some quite weird and quirky cars
Nope. The YRV Turbo was 140BHP in Japan. For the U.K the car was de-tuned for emissions (Same as what Subaru did to the WRX and STI cars for U.K sale). Daihatsu U.K officially imported 230 of them into the U.K. Daihatsu U.K only slightly modified the YRV Turbo, by slapping a Turbo 130 decal on the sides as well as putting on a rear underside anti-roll bar. This also meant a lot of cars going back to dealerships for updated brackets, which were prone to snapping under load. Also they put in the twin exhausts. If you look carefully on the left hand side rear bumper. You can see the cut that was made by Daihatsu U.K for this. In Japan they were single exhausts.
YRV stands for Young Recreational Vehicle (seriously!) - not many people know that. 😎Thought about buying one BITD (that's how I found out what YRV stood for) but never got as far as a test drive.
