We bought a 62plate Seat Mii four years ago with only 12,000 miles (absolutely no rust) It's still only done 18,000 and just every now and then (quite rare) this rattle occurs. You press the clutch pedal and it goes silent. But there's also a rattle from under the front nearside when going over bumpy roads. We mention it every MOT to our mechanic but he says everything is fine. It always passes without any problems every year. The underneath rattle sounds a bit like a worn trackrod end! But we love the little car. It reminds 'me' of the Hillman Imps I had years ago but a LOT better made lol.
I have a family member with a golf from 2011 makes exactly that noise, 50,000 miles later and still makes that noise. No effects on performance or reliability. 6:346:34
Nice way to work with that Citroen 👍 make a decent car for someone when it's done. Always good to hear about the decent customers, gets a bit wearing watching channels who just moan all the time, we know what it's like dealing with the public so share the good times too. Nice one James 👍🍻
The vw up the Skoda Citigo and the seat all make that noise there from the gearbox they r a cheap car to build and customers would go back and say I’ve got a noise from my gearbox they would have it replaced and the noise would still be there after it would be replaced, there is nothing wrong with the gearbox there is just little to no sound deadening material at all. We have got customers who have these cars and they r all like that and we assure them there is nothing wrong with it at all and it’s very common so it’s nothing to worry about
The last time I drove one of those was a loaner ten years ago, but I don't remember it doing that. I seem to remember being impressed how quiet it was.
Both my 14 plate move up and my current 16 plate rock up with 95k on the clock both make that noise. Perfectly normal and both are the most reliable car I've ever owned.
As someone else mentioned - Citroen maybe the front scuttle drain- will need to take a front wheel off and pull out the rubber bung top of the wheel arch. When you’ve done one side you’ll be able to do the other without removing the wheel. Normally seems to be pine tree needles that cause it - in my case at least.
My Kia Picanto did that when almost new. I adjusted (tightened) the clutch cable very slightly and the noise stopped. Looks to me like the cable stretches a bit allowing the operating arm to over-travel.
Just been for a run in the one I've got in stock, same noise when cold, once warmed up you don't notice it, it is dependant on revs, say 900 rpm it's quiet, if you put load on the engine, or if it's cold you can hear the gearbox chatter, I've had a few and they're all like that, driving is totally silent.
My first car was back in the 80s a Datsun was just the same press the clutch no noise I was told clutch release bearing but after a while you don't notice it so never got done or caused a problem 😕
@@godzilla12325 I have one, I only really noticed it if I start it next to a wall etc and don't immediately drive away, say to defrost it etc as the stereo comes on and it's gone in a couple of miles, they sold millions of them so obviously people weren't that bothered.
@@grifa4967 thats cool, all im saying is, anyone of sane mind buying a used car would run a mile if they heard that rattle. Im not for a minute suggesting it cant plod on fine for thousands of miles (christ, all those miles with that noise 🤯 lol) but i am saying with the wealth of choice at this end of the market my coin would be going elsewhere. Imagine trying to sell that private 😂 folk would run aa soon as you started it.
HI James on the Picasso clean windscreen drains either side or you fan will go again, the drain blocks and water gets into fan motor. It's got those stupid rubber ends on that flap together so just pull them off.
That is exact noise they make until properly warmed up, like a few miles this time of year, the Up forums are dull of people asking about it, post 2016 ones don't do it due to the Polo box being used. If it's done 70k or more is worth getting it changed but it won't really quieten it down, just make changing gears the smoother, will try and get a video of mine doing it and send it to you some time.
Can’t fault the C4 Picssso. I know James knows I’m a Citroen Nut but my late brother had one of these from 2010 for 3 years and she pulled like a train. Even towed my sisters Saxo with it,Granted it was the 2.0HDi EGS6 not the 1.6HDi. The drivers seat went the same in the 3 years on his so a common C4 Picssso problem.
i remember years ago when the renault 14 was in vogue they made a similar noise from the gearbox which was completely normal for them and never gave any problems, the engine was another story though .
Hi James , can’t comment on the VW but if you ever buy a Honda motorcycle it is common for them to have a noise before you pull in the clutch , I’ve had large Vfr’s , fire blades x2 and Cbr 600 x7 also own a Hayabusa and that makes a small noise when clutch is operated , the UP is a three cylinder so almost a motorcycle 🤣🤣
Selling that fiesta ecoboost at 70k on original belt to a local customer is brave bud. OK Ford might fix it, but it'll be you first in the firing line, I'd be worried it would go in bad circumstances, traffic or motorway. Hope you at least cut the oil filter up to look for bits of rubber (?) I sold a 1.4 zetec fiesta last night and I'm not worried about it blowing up (!)
James that noise is normal when cold and you,d be wasting your money changing a gearbox as the next will do it too.We had a Citigo in 2013 with 1.2K miles on it and that did it too.We have just recently this year got rid of the wifes Aygo for a 2015 Citigo Monte Carlo with 37K and that does it also and the noise on video is exactly like ours. Its all over the Skoda forum and the UP forum and that VW TSB is correct as its not a defect.People have replaced there clutch but its still there. After the engine/box warms up (which is quick on these) the noise goes away.
I had a Seat Mii in stock a few years back. Very low mileage, circa 20k and it made that noise at idle. Gear cluster roll over rattle I think was the diagnosis. I traded it off simply because I didn't want the hassle of having to explain it to ever person that came to try the car. Shame really as the car was absolutely mint. Car is still going many years later. I think later ones have improved that but not 100% sure.
I've had one from new (2012) and it has always made a gearbox noise now only got 26k miles on it, still going strong. Check out the VW Up forum as this has been commented on since the car came out.
I have a 2002 fiesta which does the same thing as per the VW service action it is just the noise of the gearbox. Louder when the air con and headed screen are on. I have changed the oil and it does improve for a while but comes back. Try and oil change to satisfy your mind but probably make 0 difference
2019 Skoda Citigo owned from new 43k has just started, in this cold weather, what I’d naturally assumed to be a clutch release bearing, noise goes when clutch depressed and then when warmed up goes completely. Your Up does sound noisier than I’d prefer and would put me off the car tbh
My daughters UP has had this noise from 6000 miles ,it’s now done 57000 ,it’s lived in London driven all over the country and it’s just a great little car ,I took it straight back to to the main dealer about the noise (it was under warranty) and they said it was normal.
The Citroen c4 if it's the same place as the Peugeot 5008 it's on the drivers side take them covers of and you be able to get to it. Mine stopped working last winter bought a new one of ebay not that expensive
I had a seat arosa with a gearbox noise it was the idler bearing in the gearbox when cold dissappeared when hot they wouldnt change the box because it wouldnt have made any differance the car was bought brand new
My UP, one of the first of the production line had a noise, what I could best describe as a ping pong ball jumping/rolling on top of a rotating gear. Gearbox replaced under warranty, did not help at all. Release bearing replaced, and it helped a bit. It was always difficult to get into first gear from a standstill.
Regarding the Up, clutch rattle totally normal across the VW up/citigo/Mii, it's because they don't have a dual mass flywheel, drive a couple of miles and the noise won't be there. People have fitted new clutches and one guy even fitted a new gearbox and still the same. Nothing at all to worry about.
Yep, that noise is perfectly normal James. I've had 3 Skoda Citigos in the past and each one had the same noise. I've also seen a tech bulletin that Skoda released to its dealers about the noise and it said exactly the same as VW. Skoda describe it as a " Comfort" issue rather than a manufacturing defect. From what the master technician told me at my dealer ( and he was a goodun!!) it's a budget vehicle with a small basic gearbox in a small confined space and noise is inevitable because of the lack of any refinement. Don't go spending your money on another gearbox as it won't make any difference. If you're still in doubt consult a reputable VW dealer and I'm sure he will tell you the same. You get used to it after a while.🙂👍
Sounds like a crankshaft thrust bearing on the UP When the clutch is depressed it puts pressure towards the front of the crank when released it makes the noise
I've got a 2015 UP! ASG and my engine/transmission doesn't make that noise. I think it's the same gearbox as a manual just that it has been made through speed sensors into an auto?
Your daughter resourceful with the baking. Don’t know how many litres of fuel that would buy for Jimny if take it home to run around in field. Maybe do a vid on what recycling firm would give for the Panda. Forget how came across the Up but I’d trade it on. Wouldn’t own anything but Toyota now. Spent tens of £000’s maintaining certain makes of car. Never again.
Mg said that about one of their electric vehicles, someone released an email sent to the dealership telling them they are aware of the problem it’s something to do with the engine but to tell people there is nothing wrong with them , guy is left with a car that he can’t drive
My UP was not as noisy as that. Great cars but they are prone to rust from the inside out around the petrol cap. Reason being VW didn’t fit wheel arch liners. They refuse to rectify under the 10’year warranty as they say it’s wear and tear. From 2018 onwards they started fitting arch liners….. funny that?!
Some VW up's do it others don't my wife's 2016 has been doing it for the last 75,000 miles, its now at 120,000 miles, my daughter has a 2013 UP and does not chatter, and 115,000 miles, we've owned them both for 6+ years, something to do with them not having a dual mass flywheel and 3 cylinders.
A box oil change would help, but the noise James is very much normal. A brand new VW unit would be slightly quieter for a huge expense. The sound deadening on the bulkhead is crap so you hear everything going on in the bay. Cracking little motors though and the first car I recommend to new drivers.
That's how they sound, put some ep 140 gear oil if it worries you, I'll not affect anything, do bother about it, that's exactly how they are, I did have a very low miles one and that was quiet tho, but once they get a bit of leg on them it's how they sound, you'll end up with a 700 quid box rebuild and clutch bud for maybe no improvement. I'll e mail you a video of mine.
I wouldnt fit parking sensors to the Fiesta....not after the Aygo unless i had a non refundable dep to cover my time and the cost. The most I would "fit" are a set of floor mats. I await further news about the Fiesta punter......

It's more likely the clutch release bearing . 👍🦊
If I bought that it would be coming straight back to the dealer. That’s dreadful.
That UP does not sound right
Noise is normal. My 1.8 TSI Leon has done it since I had it 5 years ago also.
My daughter had a pug 107 that sounded like that and was told what do you expect from a 3 cylinder engine she had it a fair few years with no bother
Gearbox making noise in that situation can be dual mass but he is correct they all tend to make some noise
What happened to the Fiesta St I kept seeing in tne background James? 👀
Check Gearbox oil level first. Have had cars with low oil from new. Put a tube of Wynns High Pressure Gear Oil Additive in.
My Up has been exactly the same for 8 years....

It's a characteristic of the VW UP that it gives you a headache and irritates the life out of you according to the manufacturers. LOL.
As someone who is mechanically paranoid that "chatter" made me very nervous.
Yep my up makes that noise
I've got an up here, exactly the same mate.
Would that not aslso affect the seat mii and skoda citigo if they havent had that same issue thats wierd as they are effectively the same car
any recommendations on the aftermarket parking sensors? need some myself but can’t see much aside from the dolphin ones on amazon
on the up its the clutch arm, it click, clacks, they alll do it,
James just put another S/H box in it with with thicker oil

Just sounds like gearbox idler gear chatter. It goes when the clutch is depressed because the gearbox stops turning.
James I would get that chatter looked at, I wouldn't buy a car making that noise.
I've put you a video on my (small channel) mate to allay your fears on up boxes (!)
that noise would do my head you think they would do a recall redesign to slight the bloody noise
You would think so
