Even worse now, they switched to mediatek, not the best, hey? They still on android 11, when android 13 is almost out, and their software support is EVEN WORSE, most of their g series devices don’t even get a single major software update, and their phones are getting EVEN SLOWER than previous years phones, the only thing that is technically better is the addition of 5g on some higher end g series phones, and 90hz on some higher end g series phones.

Glad I watched this! I ordered the Moto G Power from Boost, and on their website, the 2021 model was pictured. When it arrived today, I found that they had sent the 2020 model. I was not happy, especially since I need to activate a new phone ASAP. So I googled to find out what the difference is, and was reassured by your comparison. Guess I'll keep the older model, but I'll have to replace the case I had bought. Thanks.

A small price to pay, I'd say. I WANTED a 2020 for my bro today, but they're not directly sold by Motorola anymore, they're hard to find used (people want to keep theirs, of course!), & are overpriced refurbished. Though at least I was glad to get a 2021 instead of the 2022, cuz those are even WORSE in several ways! (Certainly in ways that matter to my bro.)

  • @telo4713
    @telo4713 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

If nothing else, Motorola could have kept the dual speakers from the 2020 model, but with the 2021 version they could have had them both fire outwards. It'd be a large improvement over the speaker arrangement from the 2020 version, which has a downward firing bottom speaker.
Plus the 3.5 mm jack could have been top center.
They had a chance to fix certain design flaws from the 2020 Moto G Power but it sounds like they dropped the ball on that one.

Something that was not mentioned here is that the 2020 version had a 16 meg main camera...the 2021 version has a 12 meg camera. It has a 48 meg main camera sensor that averages the pixels to a 12 meg final pic. Now all that work might give you a truer rendered pic, but the final pic is smaller than last year's.

I have had the 2020 version for over a year now and have had to send it back in for a refurb multiple times. Mostly issues with calls not working over wifi or sound echoing really loudly for people on the other end. My wife has the same phone and she has had similar issues. Perhaps this is why they dropped the ear speaker? I got fed up and got the 2021 version just to see if its corrected these issues because otherwise I love this phone. I would agree that a lot of the changes are downgrades. But, I do not know if I would consider them a big deal as far as adjustments. I personally can not see the difference of 720p and 4k on a smaller screen. I do not use my phone speakers to listen to music. If I wanted to take an ultrawide shot I would just do a panorama and stitch the images together. So, in an attempt at price savings they just removed these things. But, at the same time why not just get last years phone and get a little bit more even if it is trivial.

Any aspect ratio over 18:9, you're getting cheated, & the phone becomes too needlessly huge for holders & purse pouches with no benefit.
Then look at the dwindling hard drive space (wrongly nicknamed ROM to differentiate from RAM) even in big expensive flagship phones! We were heading into 1 TB territory, it was great! ... Then the next top models went back down to 512 GB, then 128 GB... Down, down, down...
(Sure, SOME still have SD card slots to expand it, but apps are getting bigger to make more use of higher stats, especially high-end games, & most of those can't be run from SD card. Plus the OS itself (& un-deletable bloatware) are getting bigger too, leaving people having to delete their apps instead of enjoying whatever they want. Whoopsies! ...& even THEN, LOTS of the flagships are ALSO getting rid of SD card slots too! Even worse!
Much of this is due to the convenience of streaming media largely taking the place of purchasable MP3s, or FLAC/WAV CD rips, thus a large chunk of phone users may not need much file storage space for their music collection... But between the horrible compression required for streaming, & growing loss of the 3.5mm headphone jacks forcing us to use lossy, high-latency Bluetooth... it's hard to listen to actual high-quality audio with all the nuances the artist intended, & get a phone with good processor & RAM anymore. We seem stuck with these lower-end phones if we want our lossless jack back.
The other factor is that the big companies want everyone to pay for cloud storage subscriptions as a substitute. If they keep squeezing our phone storage space, & don't let us use SD cards to expand it, they can get more people to cave in & get Google Drive, Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, etc. But yeah... That doesn't help when apps can't run from those either!)
THEN, there's the deception with new processors. Like oh wow, a Snapdragon octo-core that lists a 3.0 ghz clock speed, so you're getting that 3 times 8 (24 ghz total), right? Nope! U.S. Samsung Galaxy S22 5G has ONE 3.0 ghz core (the "Gold" one acting as headliner), then three 2.4 ghz Silver cores, then four 1.7 ghz Bronze cores! Only 17 ghz total!
The trend had already been sneaking up on us a while back, but not as severely. At least with the S8, for example, its headliner 2.35 ghz core was used for half (four cores), while the other half were 1.9 ghz each. So you at least got HALF of the cores at the layman's advertised rate, as opposed to only 1/8th of them!
Heh, also notice: (2.35 ghz x 4) + (1.9 ghz x 4) = 26.16 ghz total, in a phone from 2017. WAY more than the 2022's 19 ghz!. ...Well, to be fair, ghz aren't a unified speed unit, since calculations per cycle ARE improving... But still, we're capable of WAY better speeds! Just think if all 8 cores were actually the top core's speed! But nope, we don't deserve that. We only need to THINK that that's what we're getting so we shell out the big bucks!
(There ARE technical reasons why this arrangement works better for average users in most situations, but power users who dive into resource-intensive apps are stuck in the bottleneck, & companies just refuse to give us the good stuff! Especially bad since phone processors don't currently do simultaneous multi-threading like PCs can.)
They aren't doing that deceptive practice to computer processors; their stated ghz per core are exactly what you get, across the board! (Well, other than physical cores vs threads, but this has way better efficiency reasons, & is still not as egregious once you know that very simple distinction). Largely thanks to plenty of folx like me who build our own systems. When we buy components, if we were to see something like this we'd laugh & never buy them, so they'd go quickly bankrupt. They're forced to be transparent when each piece can be held in hand & chosen like fruit from a tree.
Meanwhile, after phone manufacturers made it so we couldn't open up our phones anymore & see for ourselves (largely so we could no longer simply replace the batteries like any other electronic, so the unit is now destined to die so you have to buy a new one), they could start getting away with such deceptive marketing. & by the time people noticed, it was already standardized, thus they could just ignore any complaints.
Soooo yeah, that ended up being long, lol, but I'm just SO frustrated (as a moderately-savvy tech-girl) that phones are largely getting worse yet costing more! The more you know, the more frustrating it is! But most people don't know better (not their fault; if only our eduction systems tuned us more to be creators & innovators, instead of just workers & consumers...). & when people don't know better, they get taken more & more advantage of as time goes on. & the further entrenched such a corrupt market gets, the harder it becomes to change it for the better.
If you've read this, well, now you know too. Ignorance is bliss, but truth can set you free. Best bet now, is to look at the fine print when it comes to purchase decisions. Use sites like GSM Arena to deep-dive into phone stats & use their comparison tools. (This channel did great for laymen in this video too!)
If you'd like to actually do something about this corruption, support & promote legal policies in favor of consumer rights (contact representatives to prioritize FCC/FTC actions, sign official petitions to bring issues to the table, seek more official regulation of businesses & less de-facto regulation of consumers, etc), & vote with those stances in mind.
I don't blame anyone else for just living their lives the best they can, but I won't go down without a fight! 😼

Im sorry but i flat ouf disagree. True the moto 2021 did get the down grade yes, but one thing i notice many reveiwers forget about out is the fact that the more high quality specs and cameras and pixels you get the more power your phone has to use to run that which means your battery will drain faster, how ever the lower quality and the less ram usage and the less fancy cam specs ect is used the less power the phone needs to run it which lengthens the battery life. think of it kinda like the battery saving mode on your device, you turn it on and it keeps the brightness on a particular level, it slows down ram usage and video quality display to reserve power in your battery to make it last longer, thats what the motto G power is about Conserving battery energy, its not called the motto G fancy, its not called motto G cool. Its not called the motto G super performance. its called motto G power cause thats what its about, your sacrificing fancy cool specs for longer battery life, i went almost 4 days without charging the motto 2021 with decent use, yes mottorola will make better g power phones in the near futuer, but the 2021 was not a upgrade, just an alternative.

Is it fair to say this phone is designed for seniors on a budget? My aunt has the 2021, and the 720p resolution isn't an issue because her display scaling is so large. But she struggles to type, so having a big display to top on is huge for her. The speaker is also *insanely* loud, so she never misses a phone call due to not hearing it. She never has to worry about it dying, and it's just fast enough that she doesn't get frustrated with it.

International units are different for some reason, in many phone models. For the longest time, nearly all European phones on average had 4 GB RAM, while the equivalent American models were stuck with only 3 GB! It made me so mad while phone shopping...
Though to even it out, the Euro folx were stuck with Exynos processors, while we got Snapdragons (which USUALLY perform a bit better, last I've seen).
They should all just be the same, in my opinion. Nobody deserves less than someone else by default. A model should be a model, & that's it. Making changes to it? Call that a new model. Reduces confusion.

Motorola isn't going anywhere with their lineup other than creating more digital waste. Based on their software support alone (or severe lack of it) most of the people that purchased them ended up purchasing a new phone that wasn't Motorola a year or less later. I owned one for about 90 days (Moto One 5G Ace) and then turned around and bought a Pixel 6 because once you get familiar with it and the terrible support, you just want to circumvent the possibility of having a "Moto moment" again. Once Lenovo/Motorola was sold off to China, it's been a steep ride downhill since. Take it from a previous owner...DON"T do it.

I don't need a phone, I have a Samsung Galaxy S21, I just want something to watch videos with.
Something I can also transfer videos/pictures from my cpu to that phone to have them there, you know. And also to watch TH-cam, Twitter, etc, using the WiFi.
Best Buy is currently selling the Moto G Power 2021 for $179.99.
I was going to purchase the G Power 2021 until I saw this video, LOL!
So I immediately went looking for the 2020 model, but it's not available anymore it seems. Walmart has the cheapest ones at around $170 (Brand New), but they're out. Amazon has a few USED for around $200, but I'm not paying that much for a used phone.
Is there anything you can suggest?
I'm willing to spend, tops, between
$150 - $200. Again, for what I want it, I'm not trying to spend alot.
Just something with good HD resolution and a decent amount of memory, 64gb would be perfect.
I liked the G Power also because it has an SD Card slot.
If you could recommend something I would really appreciate it. 👍🏻

My only complaint is that you didn't really demo the camera as well as you could have, such as taking photos/video outside, indoors, different locations, etc... And while I do agree this phone is a downgrade regarding specs, it still has a really nice camera, pretty much the same as the Moto Zoom, making this the Zoom's little brother by camera spec comparison. Yes the original G Power is a better phone, but for someone whose more interested in photography rather then specs, this has the potential of being a great camera phone. Next time maybe you can sign off saying something along those lines instead of focusing on the negatives. Just some friendly criticism, you're doing great otherwise. Thanks for the comparison.

We have to be real here. There is no visible difference between 720p and 1080p on a display that is less than 7 inches from a normal viewing distance. I have a 2020 and 2021 model side by side and the difference in resolution is not noticeable unless you squint and look really close. Unless you're using your phone for VR experiences, you should prefer to have a 720p display because that results in both less memory usage, but also much less battery life consumed during active use. Which is the whole point of the Power.
The camera is also much better on the 2021 model, but you have to be comfortable with installing a third party camera app. It's also fine that they removed 4K video recording because the cameras on both of these phones are simply not good enough to make 4K video recordings worth it. Let's also be real here that unless you're spending $1K+ on a phone specifically marketed as a high end camera phone, you should be using a proper DLSR camera for 4K video recordings.

  • @Locke99GS
    @Locke99GS 3 ปีที่แล้ว

You seem to miss the entire point of this phone.
    Battery life.
CPUs will be modern but slowish to save power. Screen having lower resolution requires less power to function and less GPU power to to drive fewer pixels. All these things only need to be "good enough". Anything beyond that is spending power unnecessarily.
15w vs 10w you claim is a measily increase, but that is actually a 50% improvement. Even if it isn't very fast, that is a _massive_ difference over the previous model. Given the same battery capacity, this should charge ~50% faster, and with components consuming less power, the battery life should increase.

I thought they would go 6.8 screen and a 6000mah like the overseas model I've seen. I would have paid for that model. Glad I got the 2020 power this one is trash
