      As someone who grew up in the Carver/Langston neighborhood near Oklahoma Ave, this was incredibly shortsighted by the residents. Forced people to have to use Metrobus to get downtown. Maybe if DC gets control of the RFK site to develop it, they might reconsider a station there.

    I will note that provisions for an infill station west of the deleted Telegraph Road station was added when the segment west of Alexandra Yard to Van Dorn Street station was built. The location of the platform for that infill is across the CSX tracks west of South Quaker Lane and is clearly visible on Goggle Earth.

    • @StepBackDoorsClosing
      @StepBackDoorsClosing  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Fascinating -- do you think there is any realistic chance a J01 Station ever gets built? Or were these provisions simply included to appease local leaders in Alexandria?

    • @SandBoxJohn
      @SandBoxJohn 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@StepBackDoorsClosing Based on the what is and has been developed in the area of the station, I think not. Bluestone Road off Eisenhower Avenue was graded in a manner to allow the construction of a bridge over the tracks to connect to the unnamed street that provides access to the City of Alexandra Fleet Services. There is very little area on the south side of the tracks at Bluestone Road for multi modal access to an entrance that would likely be on the west end of the station. I don't see the likelihood of the City of Alexandria moving their Fleet Services operation elsewhere and transferring title of the properties to WMATA for a station entrance and a developer to develop the rest.
      On the matter of the deleted junction west of Van Dorn Street, There were no provision built for a future junction, however the land need for the junction still belongs to WMATA.

      It should be noted that J01 continues to exist as a future infill station in all WMATA asset management maps! The future J01 station is named Quaker Lane. The only other unbuilt infill station on the network included in asset management maps is Wolf Trap on the N line.

    • @SandBoxJohn
      @SandBoxJohn หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@brycebundens6866 I am well aware of the fact that the ascending numbers in the train control segments numbering schema without stations are for future infill stations. C11 Potomac Yard, J01 Quaker Lane and N05 Wolf Trap.
      There was no train control segment number for NOMA Gallaudet when the proposal to build an infill station there was made. WMATA dropped B35 in between B03 Union Station and B99 Brentwood Yard, B35 means B03 1/2.

    Congress Heights Station would have been best at the other end of Alabama Ave. The station would have served both ends of Alabama Ave, Hillcrest and parts of Good Hope Rd. We also desperately need a stations that extends south of Maryland Oxon Hill, National Harbor, Camp Spring, Fort Washington, Accokeek, Clinton, Brandywine, and Charles County.

    7:00 did Metro even ever end up running 4-minute service to Franconia-Springfield?

    • @StepBackDoorsClosing
      @StepBackDoorsClosing  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      I believe the lowest scheduled headways on BL were every 6 mins during rush hour (prior to Rush+ & Silver Line Service). Metro's early service projections were quite rosy -- in reality, it fell short by a combination of rail car shortages, increased operating costs, and underwhelming passenger totals. Still, the concern about having two separate terminals remains valid -- even under 6 min headways, if service were split between Franconia and Springfield, each would have trains every 12 mins.

    • @StepBackDoorsClosing
      @StepBackDoorsClosing  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Similar thoughts were considered during the Silver Line design process. Even while servicing the same number of stations at the current locations, it would have been cheaper to construct a "Y", with one spur serving Dulles, and the other serving Loudoun Gateway & Ashburn. However, the same problem would have occurred, where service frequencies would have been split in half for each individual destination, which was deemed to be more detrimental to ridership than the corresponding capital cost savings

    • @pizzajona
      @pizzajona 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@StepBackDoorsClosing oh yeah I definitely agree consolidating the stations was the better move. I was just surprised to hear they were planning on that frequent service. That would be 30 tph assuming the Orange line also ran with 4 min headways. IIRC WMATA can only handle 26 tph rn.

    Anyone else annoyed by the Blue and Yellow lines in Virginia being flipped? Van Dorn and Franconia are the Blue line, Huntington and Eisenhower are the Yellow line. I just felt bothered by that.

    • @StepBackDoorsClosing
      @StepBackDoorsClosing  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Under the original system plans, the Yellow Line would have terminated at Franconia (or Springfield, before that branch was nixed) and the Blue Line would have gone to Huntington -- the routes were "temporarily" swapped due to a rail car shortage when the segment between national airport and Huntington opened in December 1983 (which were later made permanent). For the stations discussed in this video, I decided to use the original service patterns since that is how they were imagined when these stations were in the ARS (and when they were eventually deleted).

    OMG! How could you make a stupid 35 minute video on WMATA without mentioning Wolftrap station and Leesburg station at Rt. 15 and the Dulles Greenway?!?!

    • @StepBackDoorsClosing
      @StepBackDoorsClosing  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Only discussed stations that once were included in the ARS but later were deleted -- figured the video was long enough already and I needed a clear boundary. Neither of those stations were ever added to the ARS. Wolf Trap was considered but the ridership projections were insufficient (and it received some pushback from nearby residents) -- some basic provisions were made for the possible addition down the line, but I find it incredibly unlikely that it ever gets built. The Leesburg station was never seriously considered -- the justification to build the Silver Line to Ashburn was shaky to begin with, certainly no chance that Leesburg would have been included as well. The closest this area got to receiving a station occurred in 2013, when WMATA studied 11 possible end-of-line expansions to evaluate which might be viable to construct -- one of which was a three-station extension of the Silver line (with stations along the Greenway at Belmont Ridge, Crosstail Blvd, and Route 15). Ultimately, this study concluded that this extension could not support the ridership to justify the construction cost.
