  • Submarine Torpedo Attack Training (plus a separate UGM-84 Harpoon missile launched during the same "RIMPAC" training exercise to Sink Ship).
This remarkable video contains two pieces of footage from same "RIMPAC" event-taken from inside a United States Navy Los Angeles-class fast attack sub, and from the air-details the preparation, loading, and launch of an anti-ship missile, and also shows a conventional torpedo striking the training target/decommissioned navy vessel.
Official release: PACIFIC OCEAN (July 12, 2018) Sailors assigned to Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine USS Olympia (SSN 717) prepare to launch a UGM-84 Harpoon missile during the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) training exercise to sink the decommissioned ex-USS Racine (LST-1191) July 12 off the coast of Hawaii. Twenty-five nations, 46 ships, five submarines, about 200 aircraft, and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC from June 27 - Aug. 2 in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. The world's largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity while fostering and sustaining cooperative relationships among participants critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security of the world's oceans. RIMPAC 2018 is the 26th exercise in the series that began in 1971.

I served onboard this ship, the USS Racine, LST-1191, from early 1975 to mid ‘77, as a FTG. Only did one WesPac, but I lived aboard the entire time, so she was my home. We had about a year and a half shipyard stint in San Diego prior to the deployment. Basically shore duty!
I watched this video a year after she was used for the target practice. Have to say, it was difficult to watch. She had been mothballed in Oahu after being decommissioned, and I have some great pictures of her quietly resting while her fate was being planned out.
To the US Marines that came aboard for some exercises in the Pacific, I have to say it was mostly good times. I remember having delays in meals, but otherwise no major issues. I did shore patrol with a couple and remember getting the special tour of Saipan with a local police officer.
    Fun memories for sure!
The Racine fought back to the very end, and may she continue to serve as a resting place for many sea creatures!

I severed aboard the target ship. The USS Racine LST 1191. Mostly Aluminum with a flat bottom to be able to pull up on a beach and offload tanks. Was the worst riding ship in the Navy due to hull design but we could beach with only 17 inches of water at the bow. Sad to see her used for target practice.

@blackzed I agree. My ship, USS CONSTELLATION (CV64), was towed to Brownsville, TX, and methodically disassembled over the course of more than a year -- maybe two years -- all the way to her keel. And then they cut up her keel. Sad to see happen to a fine carrier.

The keel of a ship is fully submerged. It’s also the lowest part of the boat. There’s nothing below it except seawater. So how could a torpedo “hit the ship” below he keel? Also, how could it become a cruise missile above water when it stays below the keel? I don’t get anything about this comment.

The fish was shot out ...the that air pressure was vented into the bilge. Very loud. Next...you manually set in those bridges and yanked, tugged and pulled the next fish into position by hand....these guys have it much better..and cleaner...I bet there isn't a hernia in the whole room.

OK, Mk-48 are swim out and no, you dont see the wake as it travels down range. They are designed to travel in a particular pattern, before turning and heading to target. I an enemy ship detected high speed screws, they would fire down the return bearing and hope to hit the target sub. IN WW2, the torpedoes were bubblers and could be tracked to a certain point. Now, once the MK 37 or MK 48 reach that pattern, they turn and head to target, guided by either the wire OR, to sonar input of the target. Once acquired, they go high speed and then, no getting away from them. They will track you until they hit or run out of power. Even the version of the MK 14 from WW2 was pretty awesome. Watched it take down an old oiler in target practice in mid 70's. DBF

The magnetic influencer in the MK14, for example, was calibrated off the coast of Florida if I remember correctly. When operating in the Pacific, it was found that the influencer was too sensitive (due to variance in the magnetic field) and would cause the torpedo to detonate too early. Commanders learned to stop using them.
