    Regarding the woman near the end that's nervous of being disrespectful: I'm black, and I honestly don't care if someone calls me black or African American. Like the interviewer said, it's okay to ask whether something you're doing is offensive. It's very much appreciated and always reciprocated.

      +Scriptures Only lol now I'm just imaging someone naming every African American by name to avoid offending anyone by generalizing or using an offensive term "... and Carlos and Megan and Joe and Tyler and Canmie..." XD

      Some people hate to be called black, some people hate to be called african american. Asking is so much more easy than mumbling words.

    • @linusbern2
      @linusbern2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The other thing is, how often do you actually identify the color of the person you are talking to. I might say, "I talked to the black guy who works at the library", but I can't think why I would ever have reason to say to him, "hey black guy", he already knows what color he is. So who are you worried about giving offense to?

    • @alanaveira9723
      @alanaveira9723 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      there a few people who have a problem with being referred to as black or African American. I think it's because those people don't like the idea of being labelled. I know many people who I would consider black that don't want to be thought of that way because of the way that some white people tend judge black people. Which I think is ridiculous. For example raven Simone she was interviewed by Oprah or someone else and stated that she didn't want to be considered African American. Saying that she is an American.

      well the slang doesn't say Black Lives Matter Too so I don't know how you expect people to understand such a slang that really hasn't been explained, they just claim that all their people are I some kind of genocide, we're all human I don't know why people have that Jupiter I have toenails for right and now to mow to preacher, how well a master chief can caravan a hotdog mustard topping running cross country zebra defusing bomb at A Bo2 best cod eat corn

      When I misunderstand something I don't do something out of spite that is completely against what those three words mean. It's not a misunderstanding it's done to pick a fight, and completely deny people their humanity simply because we lack accountability and don't want to talk about things that make us uncomfortable. If it truly was a misunderstanding people would ask, not do things to further the disenfranchisement of black americans. "My son's kidney hurts, his kidney matters... all kidneys matter ma'am so you can continue to wait while your son dies and maybe we will do something about it but right now he's not a priority." Just like systematic racism isn't a priority and black people (your son) dies because instead of his kidney (institutional racism causing violent unwarranted deadly encounters with officers of the law) we are worried about every kidney (all lives matter) that isn't hurt.

      I agree, I think her attitude toward the people she was interviewing really helped them realize that not all black people are "militant," angry people. As someone who grew up in a VERY small place in southern, rural America, it's understandable that the violent, uncharacteristic examples Fox News puts out there are the only examples these people may have of black people.
      As a side note, I'm really impressed at how well Hank Green's + system has changed TH-cam comment sections.

    • @Redheadsmiles23
      @Redheadsmiles23 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It kinda gives you a view into how they might've ended up where they are with their own political views. I feel like for some of them, they feel they can't win with the African-American community, and so they lash out in frustration, which I can understand.

    • @aaronhoy3410
      @aaronhoy3410 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Well to be fair going to a conservative show to learn about their views is pretty off-putting for most people because you don't find a lot of nuance and potential for understanding in what they say. It takes a "liberal show like this" to see that the everyday conservative isn't totally crazy and impossible to find common ground with.

    • @Joseph-zm6sy
      @Joseph-zm6sy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Aaron Hoy I recommend looking up Dave Rubin on TH-cam he interviews some conservatives, or you can just look up conservatives on TH-cam. Also, It is liberal shows like this that help fuel the belief that conservatives are crazy at all because to them you're crazy if you disagree.

      +Tyrone Shelton Lol yeah but once centuries of slavery was over its not like everything was fixed immediately... It was up until fifty years ago that blacks were still beaten and ridiculed for wanting to go to integrated schools or drink from the same water fountain was whites. I understand that yes, people should work harder. But don't think just because slavery simply ended that the solution was reached and everything was fine. Being born and raised in places like Compton and North Philadelphia is very hard and you don't have the same environment as someone born in a wealthier area with adequate schools, housing, and resources. +Corey Palmer And homicides, and since police are sworn to protect and serve, cops should be held to a higher standard amd thus shouldn't act like criminals now should they. In the cases that sparked the rise of persistence of the Black Lives Matter movement cops were choking out and severing the spines of black men before the criminals had a chance. A man in Florida even got shot lying on his back with his hands in the air so as a person whose history includes apartheid and multiple stop and frisks on the way to school, church, and work there is a reason for mistrust and concern for blacks because we've seen true oppression and anything that reminds us of that not only on a personal level but represented in objective facts is cause for concern.

    Someone explained it to me as, when you hold a rally to support cancer treatment, you're not saying sufferers of other diseases don't matter, you're just focusing on cancer for right now. Calling attention to the needs of the black community doesn't mean others don't matter. It's just time to examine how police target the black community, and what can be done about specific problems affecting the black community. When people say all lives matter it's basically refusing to acknowledge that the black community suffers a particular plight.

    The only thing I don't like about Samantha's view on political matters is that she generalizes white people, almost as if she doesn't know that she's white as well. As a Latino, it feels the same as seeing someone saying all Hispanics are ________. It just doesn't make sense when we try to educate conservatives on views that don't fit with their party's views. Not all white people are a problem, but saying so breeds this prejudice from a lot of minorities, just like anti-Muslim rhetoric breeds intolerance of Muslim-Americans in many conservatives.
    Does anyone feel the same way? I'm really wanting to discuss this.

      +Something Clever yes, in the past, my ancestors were likely racist, but why should I be viewed negatively or expected to give others special treatment because of actions that occurred before I was born? Some of this rhetoric that white people (like me) should feel guilty for actions that they were not responsible for seems very racist to me. For the most part, we as a society have gotten past the idea of the "sons paying for the sins of the fathers", with the only form of that concept that the media still accepts being the shaming of white people. Am I misunderstanding anything?

    • @008zapotec
      @008zapotec 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +ThrawnCaedus L It is because white people have a tendency to want to forget it ever happened!!! They are rewriting text books in Texas that omit slavery at all! We have to bring the topic in the fold so that they remember that all races are not born at the same place in the beginning of a race to the top. All Americans are capable of their dreams but many start with the burden of social injustice, a collapsing system of financial support to reach those dreams, by Republicans who view it as a waste of money aka scholarships and affordable housing, and systemic racism. Don't lash out at us because we are spreading the word and you don't want to hear it because it might seem a little unjustified. Your bygone comments are tangible realities that people of color cannot escape on a daily basis. Instead pick up the flag, join us in unity, and lets change this world!

    This was a great! I actually heard points from both sides and understand things a little better. I have been thinking about all this killing back and forth and it occurred to me that listening may be the key. Listeners are approached, bullies are attacked. In all the cases of violence I have seen recently the police are straight up yelling and screaming and demanding. I wonder what would happen if they spoke to someone and maybe asked for co operation in resolving the issue at hand. Idk. Just a thought.

      I do think that talking to someone calmly and explaining why you are having them do something is reassuring. You reap what you sow. Most of the people who have had encounters with police in the recent videos were scared or on edge. Some cops take themselves to seriously and they feel they have to get respect by force and I beg to differ. I also agree with another part of your comment. The best thing you can do is listen wholeheartedly without being defensive. I got pulled over a couple of months ago because I had expired tags. The cop was really kind to me. I never had any tickets before so he explained everything to me and asked if I had any questions. If only most cops that we see in videos acted that way. Others might have assume that I did it intentionally and I was trying to be "slick", but I really appreciated how he handled it . It was a black man, I don't know if it had anything to do with it, but I would hope I would be treated like that by all cops.

  • @jessus1026
    @jessus1026 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This really was a good segment, but I think Sam doesn't see or at least acknowledge the radical side of the BLM movement; I get it, African Americans feel persecuted by law enforcement and are subject to police brutality and I initially supported them in the beginning...
    Then came the riots and let me tell you, being caught in one changes your view on things
    .
    Maybe it's a clouded viewpoint because of that, but at this point, I consider BLM to be a borderline domestic terrorism group. When the original goal is cast to the side and people start obstructing highways, crashing parades, college events and hijacking memorials for their own agenda, and literally saying they want not only cops dead, but white people too, that's when I get put off by this sort of reporting.
    Again, I totally agree with the end results: we need open dialogue and learn to understand one another to bridge the divide, but when you choose to ignore something that's making that ideal difficult, you're pretty much negating the end goal.

    • @WOLFGANG634
      @WOLFGANG634 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's not the whole entire movement just like the Police brutality going on a few spoiled apples ruined the bunch. Some of the people are getting too carried away and reflecting on the rest of the movement in a bad way. The same way the Police Officers do when a few prejudice ones intervene and hurt others. Both sides need to quite and acknowledge that what they're doing is not helping.

    • @jessus1026
      @jessus1026 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kieana Wright Hence why I said radical side; I know there are people who don't stoop to such lows in the movement, but at this point, the loud and violent are the only ones getting attention (just like every other group...)
      The people who are on the peaceful side of things need to not only condone these actions, but stop them entirely...but The Bystander Effect really prevents this.

      The problem is that Black people have been screaming BLM for decades now and no one notices until it inconveniences their life somehow. Only when the cop shootings happened in Dallas did it all of a sudden become a radical movement. It's like when everyone blamed the LA riots on the Rodney King verdict, but no one take account of the Latasha Harlins shooting or the blatant racism in the LA police department and constant brutality.
      Tupac made a good point once when he said if you control all the food and he's outside the door singing "can I please have some food" and you don't do anything, it'll change to "give me some food," and if you still don't do anything over time it'll turn to them kicking down the door and taking the food.

    I don't know if anyone from the staff of Full Frontal reads this but I just want to extend my deepest gratitude towards writer Ashley Black. Your patience, grace and strength in this is amazing and while I can't fully understand the difficulty entering into conversations like this as a black woman (I'm a white lady ;) I appreciate how you handled these conversations. It must have been hard and exhausting. And this midwesterner white lady believes Black Lives Matter. So thank you for your work!

    After taking the time to read through the BLM website and pondering, this is what I've come up with.
    1. The slogan should be BLack Lives Matter Too.
    2. Most white ppl I know think BLM means only BLM.
    3. Most white ppl I know think if the BLM movement believe in what they are striving for they should look at the overwhelming issues at their front door step. The unfortunate amount of black on black crime, the high amount of children growing up without a fathers and the overwhelming crime rate is, well sad. So I think may white ppl think while this may be an important issue the crux of the issues are being overlooked, and these issues can only be solved with in the black community. Which leaves ppl thinking do they really care about black lives or are they just making a stink??

    I loved the white ladies at the end. I feel like that dialogue really touched on something important. They were so uncomfortable that they looked like they were about to cry. And I went through that phase, too. That's why it's so important to put yourself out there and in circumstances where you're exposed to all kinds of people and talk to them as people. Im a white chick who was in a diversity scholarship, so I was actually the minority because of it. And it was so eye opening. So many brilliant, well-spoken people from every background that became like family to me. Asking uncomfortable questions makes you feel hella vulnerable, so you need a supportive and kind environment to break through that

    I had so much respect for the way the Bee's correspondants gently nudged people towards thinking more critically about what they were saying and got them to admit how they feel. And it shows that much of the problem comes from fear (which leads to anger), guilt and not knowing how to reach out and communicate in a loving way with one another. And as a reporter (who has covered many events by the far left of democrats and covered rural republican trump country) I have seen this on "both sides".

    See, THIS is what we need more of. People talking to each other. I truly believe that while there are hateful bigots who can't be changed or reasoned with, MOST people are just too focused on their own viewpoints and stay in their own little echo chambers but want the same things: less violence and less divisiveness.. When we talk to each other, face to face and one on one (even here, too, but it's harder) it leads to greater understanding and cooperation.
