    I'm a life-long Mainer and Samantha hit the nail on the head in this video! I hate when people say "Why did you vote for him??" Most of us did not. Most of us are embarrassed by his actions and rhetoric and despise him.

      What if the democrat had dropped out when she saw she was polling at less than 20% in the first election? Would the independent who came in second have picked up her votes or would they have gone to the republican? Just asking. (Serious question)

      I live in Maine as well which has a History of strong Independent candidates. When our Independent Senator Angus King ran for office, the democratic party backed him instead of their Democratic frontrunner because they didn't want a repeat of the Gubernatorial race. This November there is a referendum for ranked voting in Maine.

    I live in Maine, and my church has a lot of asylum seekers. Those people are some of the hardest working people I know. They learn English, get jobs, despite it being nearly impossible due to permits (another story), and still try to get their families here. It's awful. They're awesome, but LePage keeps trying to get rid of them.

    Hi um yes I'm in Maine. He was elected because we had three candidates and the other 2 split the vote and then that idiot won. He's horrible, racist, homophobic, and frankly the worst governor we've had. It's just as horrible as Sam said, though.
    So on behalf of Maine, I apologize.

    I remember once when I was young, maybe 8, having a conversation about what "shock value" is. My parents explained that it's when you say something just for the reaction of it. They warned I should be careful because the "shock" can distort and distract from what's actually being said. They also said shock value is cheap because it's easy and doesn't actually require any wit or insight. Too many Americans are falling for the distraction and confusing shock value for bluntness.

    Thank you, Samantha Bee and all your staff, for putting together the best and most complete analysis of our troubled government. Especially for pointing out the three way split voting. Why in god's name Cutler ran a second time, it just made me crazy. And Mike Michaud was an excellent legislator. I will take boring any day over the LePage drama. Michaud might have won if Cutler weren't in the race, but maybe not because he came out before he decided to run. Bottom line, LePage has blocked necessary bills, embarrassed the majority of us Mainers, and created an atmosphere of anti-anyone-not-white. As you said at the beginning, here is an example of Trump in action. I further add, a Trump presidency would be worse: a complete nationalist fascism.

  • @EnclaveOfObsidian

      The rumor going around is that donny didn't actually want to run for president. His kids made him run so they could prove to the world that donny is, in fact, insane. They will then have him committed and take over what's left of his empire.

I strongly oppose Johnson's platform, but I think he's a good guy, mostly. I agree more with some of Clinton's platform, but think she is a very bad person. And has the history to prove it.

    The Maine election results highlight how badly the US needs a better voting system than first last the post. if, for example, there was a preferences system, the people who voted for independents could put the democrat as their second choice. The US crows about how awesome a democracy they are but the voting system there seems designed to hurt the voters.

    • @thunderwalk
      @thunderwalk 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nik Saunders oh hey fellow Aussie! Yeah it's not a perfect system by any stretch, but at least feels like more democratic. I think it also makes protest votes way more justifiable. Conflicted progressive Americans would able to Vote 1 for Johnson/Stein AND help minimise Trump by ranking him last. As opposed to the current system where they'd be splitting the vote and hoping for the best.

    As a native Mainer, I find this video to be brilliant, hilarious, and profoundly embarrassing. Please remember that we Mainers have also elected some of the most brilliant statesmen and stateswomen in history including Margaret Chase Smith (R), Ed Muskie (D), William Cohen (R), George Mitchell (D), Olympia Snowe (R); and our current US Senators, Susan Collins (R) and Angus King (I).

    • @ronaldlessard664
      @ronaldlessard664 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      LaPage won both elections by less than a majority of the votes due to "spoiler" candidates. In this November's election we are voting on a ranked-choice voting initiative which should eliminate the problem of party extremist wining elections with less than a majority of the votes. If Maine passes this initiative, we will be the first state in the country to implement such a voting system state-wide. Several municipalities across the country have done it. Maine tends to be a centrist electorate with a reputation of electing level-headed politicians. Most of us are embarrassed by our wingnut Governor, hence our move toward ranked-choice voting.

      He has essentially brought back casual racism in America. He has managed to convince a large chunk of the American population that they can blame all of their problems on Mexicans, black people, and Muslims, while still think that that isn't racist. I'd say that's set us back much more than 25 years.

    • @preytec
      @preytec 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      rk9sbpro83 Mexicans or illegal immigrants? The fact that someone replaced "illegal immigrants" with "Mexicans" is in it's self racialism. No country has ever had an open boarder policy and still moved forward. the EU is almost at civil war over these issues, while in China they're still growing because it's so difficult to get into. Even without any terrorist groups like ISIS, an open boarder policy is a death sentence to any country that dreams to move forward. Just look at what happen to Lebanon.

    We Mainers elected one of only 2 Independent Senators to Congress (Angus King, Green Party). It's not quite fair to blame the Independent Cutler for splitting the vote, as he had good reason to expect to get elected here. As least, it's not quite fair in _the first election_. With a mere 8% of the vote in the second election, he was clearly just a king-maker.

When people try to undermine the criminal system you don't get to attack them for it. Institute a multi-party system and give everyone equal time and debate exposure, and then everything will be fine and dandy.
