  • The guitarist and singer Buddy Guy has been playing since he was a boy, and learned from such masters as Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. But at age 87, the recipient of eight Grammy Awards is not slowing down; in fact, what he's calling his worldwide "Damn Right Farewell Tour" is scheduled to run until at least next May, and maybe beyond. Correspondent Kelefa Sanneh talks with Guy about his blues journey. He also sits down with three of Guy's children to discuss the musicianship they've inherited.

Saw him in Houston like 25 years ago, will never forget. He was about 2 hours late and the crowd was kind of angry. He finally came onstage and apologized, he had just taped the Tonight Show and flew back for our show. He said he had never missed a gig and wasn’t about to start now. It was a great show. Legend 1000%🏆🏆🏆

DAMN he’s incredible! I was in Chicago 10 years ago and asked the hotel to recommend a place nearby to go. They suggested Legends and Buddy Guy happened to be there that night. It was an amazing experience!!!

When I saw Buddy Guy in Portland decades ago, he was playing a fancy guitar but what was amazing was the sound, he made it all look so easy and his voice and talent became a new pastime to relish, thank you Mr. Guy for all the notes you have played to keep the world turning with the horsepower of your sound. I still have your red polka dot hat!

Was in Chicago 2 years ago during the summer, so excited to see if I could catch him at legends, but due to COVID it was still closed ☹️ i was so bummed out. Later that winter it opened up for some shows I heard and I was even more bummed I missed it.... Hoping I could catch him somewhere, sometime before he officially stops touring, I heard he announced retirement but he keeps playing and I have hope he doesn't hang up his guitar till I see him one time ❤️🌹.

I saw Buddy perform with the Stones at the Beacon Theater in what became their Shine A Light documentary (money says most of the yuppies in attendance at their recent secret album opening show never even heard of his peers and their heroes Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, etc.). A fine statesman of the Blues tradition. The National Blues Museum in St. Louis a great place to learn the whole tradition. Give it a visit!

Saw Buddy Guy in Des Moines, Iowa a couple years ago. He was early 80s at that point. I never would have expected a octogenarian to tear through a crowd of a few thousand people walking around with his guitar playing raw blues with such intensity but that's what makes Buddy Guy a legend.

On axs television a couple of years ago, I learned that British school boys who were sent off to boarding schools hated the music that they were forced to listen to and play at school, often national or religious genres of music. But back in the day, transistor radios from the USA were playing blues from folks like Buddy Guy and those radios were being heard in Europe. Those young men in boarding schools heard sounds that they had never heard, and it was fun and appealed to them, but was condemned at the boarding schools. So, they would sneak around to listen to and practice playing the music that they grew to love, the blues. The music that came from what they listened to became rock n' roll, and why you can hear the blues in many genres of music. And that's why Buddy Guy was so important to British rock.

Fortunately as a teenager i started with the really pure early stuff like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Skip James, Charley Patton and worked my way up to early 1940s and 50s electric Blues. Stopped at late 60s, also with Buddy Guy, 1:39 thats Buddy Guy !!! not interested in the high gain noodling he did in his later career.
