    Alan, this video was interesting, enlightening, and satisfying. So much practical information helped me to understand the various materials’ attributes, and how they can be dealt with and used. Your approach was clear and simple enough for me to understand. I must say that the finished project looks grand. Knowing what went into it, there is the confidence that there will be no water issues with it in the future. It is clear that your going slowly pays off in the long run. Thank you for sharing it with us.

      Thank you so much for your lovely comment Grace, this was one of my longest ever videos, I think I would make it in two parts now. It was tough work but I was pleased with the outcome and it has lasted well so far. All the very best, take care.

    Well done Alan, a much more detailed job than you first anticipated I am sure. You certainly have made a silk purse from the pigs ear of a shower that you inherited, also recycling every item you could makes you very much the Green Warrior! Martin and I snuggle up to watch your vlogs, thank you for your time and effort, kindest regards Joy& Mart x

  • @yonatanbenavraham6598
    @yonatanbenavraham6598 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    With all the work I would have gone to a one piece enclosure with the walls and tray, three walls and a door or curtain. A bit more expensive but no more worries about leak through the tile on the walls. I detest shower curtains because they seem to want to rub up against me no matter how far away I stand. So a door and shower stall for me. I hope all your hard work fixes the problem.. I enjoyed this video and watched to the end also.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yonatan Ben Avraham Thanks very much. The difficulty is that the shower room is so small that I can’t fit a regular sized shower tray. If I could, I would have a shower cubicle with three walls and a glazed door but there isn’t the space unfortunately. I have to make do with the available space. Cheers

    really good job well done .i work in the static caravan industry and we had a van with a leak from the window which crept along the floor when we took the carpet's up it had trailed along the floor fortunatly most of the floor was still solid but with the black mould we poured neat bleach on it and you would be suprised how the mould went .thus reducing how much floor had to be replaced .anyway enough of my rambles high 5 on your effort's it looked really good and finished off really well .well done boss

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture

    Not a bad job Alan , the sealant around the base may give way at some time due to the movement of the base so may have to be renewed at some stage . Cutting tiles is not fun , i usually use an angle grinder with a stone cutting disc when i do tiling and had a good result but still tedious . Happy showering :-)

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many thanks Stephen. I realise I’ll need to keep an eye on the sealant, that’s why I give it an initial seal with the clear and then finish with the white. I don’t yet have an angle grinder although would be a handy tool to have. Cheers

    Hi just a thought to stop the tray from flexing drill 2 small holes in the face of the wood at bottom of the tray and spray expanding foam in we did it on ours and it will stop the new tray from cracking worked a treat x

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Terri. Thanks for that tip. It is the floor that flexes a little and the ribs fan out, the first being parallel to the front, so I don’t think you could get an even spread of foam underneath. But thanks for the idea. Cheers

    Well done Alan you did a good job there, it looks tons better than at the start. Having tiled a few shower rooms I know what s fiddle it can be. I think the best advice I had from a plumber was to replace the sealer every now and again to keep it water tight. Always plenty to do. My boat is still stuck in the marina due to flooding so I having to caste my vlogging wider
    Take care my friend.

  • @EnglishVeteran

    Hi Allan. Nice job, I like your approach - clean, tidy, organised under quite difficult working environment.
    Years ago I owned some holiday flats. They all had showers. The flats would have up to 6 visitors & as you can imagine the showers were subjected to a large footfall.
    I found that the plastic shower trays were a constant problem. Leaks, movement etc. I was advised to always fit ceramic trays which I did and from then on & had no further problems. I was also advised to fit a removable front panel. This enabled access to check for leaks & also check/replace the waste pipe.
    I would always recommend ceramic shower trays anywhere. I have one fitted in my Narrowboat so smaller trays can be sourced.
    Yes, replacing the sealant every year is a good idea.
    Anyway, very neat job. All the best.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Square Peg Round Hole Many thanks. I fully understand the difficulties. I would certainly have used a ceramic tray if I could have found one to fit but unfortunately couldn’t. I even had to have the acrylic one cut to size, so not easy to source. There was at one time an identical boat to mine in the Marina and the owner had had the shower room remodelled at a boat yard, which involved removing a very useful wardrobe, having a new side built, so the door could be moved to allow a larger tray to be put in. Very involved and costly, not something I’d want to do. Cheers

    Well done! You have done a great job! From watching all the boating channels I have learned that you have to stay on top of boat maintenance for sure! What do you have to do to the bilge to prevent the boat from rusting from condensation that occurs normally? We have a fiberglass Casita camper and they tend to get condensation on the Windows! Have a great year!

    Very interesting thank you, when you do any sealing the beast thing to do is use your own spit it works a treat. When I had my shower put in my bathroom mu builder made the shower base out of plywood then he painted a black rubber paint down the walls and on the shower base before he tiled.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many thanks Lewis. It’s interesting you should mention spit, as did someone else, as that’s what I used to do. I read somewhere that that could actually cause mould on the sealant. The tip I found of using white spirit works extremely well and is one I can recommend. As you know, there are various damp proofing paints available. Cheers

    Use AQUABOARD Alan
    Not tiles.
    Aquaboard is the right way I think to create shower rooms on boats
    Since with boats flexing eventually tiles loosen and or crack.
    Any way my post is after the event
    But I shall praise you for your methodical approach Alan
    Well done.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much David. Given the outline of the boat/shower room I think I would have found it difficult to cut and fit, especially working around the various fittings, so like for like replacement, as close as I could get was always on the cards for me. I would certainly prefer an aqua board finish though. All the best Alan

    I generally do not critisize other people's efforts. But you made several major mistakes in both workmanship and, in particular, materials. Starting with the fact that you had a serious mold problem that was not properly addressed. The use of "duct" tape for sealing was completely inappropriate. I could go on and on but I do not want to appear to be hypercritical. I will guarantee that within 5 years or less you will be doing this again.

    • @MyNarrowboatVenture
      @MyNarrowboatVenture  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gregory. I can't agree with you. I did not have a serious mould problem, the staining on the walls was old and dry. Usually, the shower tray is just placed on the ply floor, by using a liner beneath and a waterproof tape I was making an improvement, in the sense that it was better than not having it.
