Sock knitting is my ‘sanity’….. I’m never without a pair on the NEEDLES. I knit two-at-a-time on two separate ChiaoGoo needles. So although they are not both completed at the same ‘moment’, they are like twins - the second sock is completed shortly after the first. Definitely a ‘process knitter’. Always top-down. The ‘magic moment’ is when you follow the directions for the heel turn and suddenly you have this petite little cup that will hold your heel, you’ve created this 90* angle, and your sock has changed direction. I never understood why I didn’t like two on the same needle, but as Jonna explained her feelings, I understood my own. I learned to knit socks watching Jana of Knit Together on TH-cam. You two are so much fun……. Thanks for the knitting chat and the laughter.

I've knit a lot of socks. My favorite way is magic loop, TAAT, cuff down, heel flap and gusset. I've knit birthday socks for many people but my favorite was red, white and blue patriotic socks for a friend who ended up in a nursing home (way too young)after a bad surgery. He passed away and at the funeral, his wife told me he loved those socks so much that she buried him in them. I wasn't sure how to feel but she made it clear those socks were appreciated. I believe what the Yarn Harlot said to true, you only knit socks for people you love.

Such a beautiful and heartfelt comment. So sorry about your friend, but so sweet that his wife thought of burying him in those very special socks that you knitted for him. ❤️ Kim

Socks are my favorite thing to knit. In the past, I've used magic loop most often, but now I am reaching for my Chiaogoo 9" circulars especially when knitting vanilla socks. Thanks for sharing another great episode!

Hi and thank you for sharing. About picking up the heel stitches. If you don't do the first row in the main color, but leave it where the pattern tells you to. You knit your flap and everything else you need to knit in the contrasting color. Then you brak that yarn, move the heel stitches on your right needle back to the left needle, and then start with your main color to pick up stitches on the right side of the heel, den knit the heel stitches and then pick up on the left side. That works great without having to break the main color yarn.

Hello, I’m in Devon UK deep in the beautiful countryside. I love using two 16inch or 24 inch circular needles for knitting socks but I knit two at the same time by knitting 10 rows on one and then 10 rows on the other and marking with those lovely little bulb pins. I love doing it like this I don’t get into a tangle and they are both still portable, I keep each sock in its own organza bag and with its own Cocoknits stitch counter. I love knitting with the two circulars, it has such a lovely rhythm. Thank you for your lovely podcasts, I love watching and listening to you both, it brightens my day.

I struggled with DPNs for about 2 years - past 2 years I (continental knitter) discovered 9” chaigoo and addi’s using flexi flips for toes and now I LOVE sock knitting.

    • @thomasmcnerney9745
      @thomasmcnerney9745 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It's how you hold the needles.
Your third and fourth fingers of the left hand should be inside the triangle giving yourself leverage.
The other two needles holding stitches must be on top of the needle you are currently knitting stitches from.
This gives you a firmer grasp of your work.
Try them again this way...its much easier once these rules are followed. For continental knitting your index finger is still free for the yarn.
      Good luck.

I used to knit Continental, I used to use magic loop, I used to knit 2aat socks on ML. One day I put my knitting down and moved on to another hobby. Weaving. I went years on a knitting hiatus because I just didn’t like it anymore. I didn’t love my method, I didn’t love the fabric I produced, I didn’t love the motion. One day I was watching Sweet Georgia, who I usually watch for weaving vids, and I saw how she knitted. Irish lever style. I decided to reinvent how I knit and I am loving the new mojo. I now knit like McPhee. Right handed. I love love love 5 dpns. One sock at a time. I cast on with wood or bamboo then after a couple of rounds switch to metal. My needles don’t fall out. The rhythm of the hands and the dance of the needles is what makes a hobby zen. I am knitting my first sweater on 2 circs because to me it almost feels like dpns and I don’t like the bunny ears of magic loop. My fabric and tension is perfect now if I do say so myself. I call myself a born again knitter. The motion of the process is such an important part of the process. I don’t get joy from 2aat socks. I believe I will get joy from 2aat sleeves on 2 circs though. LOL. I want to get through the sleeves so I can finish the sweater to start something else.

@@KnitTogetherwithKimJonna It felt outrageously awkward at first after years of Continental. But I was determined and persevered… and knit very slowly; but in no time I got the hang of it. I modified it a tiny bit. Stephanie Purl McPhee uses her ring finger only. I use middle and index together. It goes under and around my middle and over my index instead. I hold the needle like a pencil as she does and the motion is like a shuttle like she does. Give it a try some time. I would honestly love to have every style of knitting in my repertoire. It can come in very handy.

I started to knit socks 40 years ago. I started with bamboo dpns and I had to test every new needle. I still love dpns but I have black ones out of Carbon from prym, which I like very much. They don‘t have a sharp tip, it‘ more like a little ball at the tip. And I love my pair of signatures, they have really sharp tips and tge are good for lace and cable patterns.
I don‘t cut the MC when I knit the heel in a CC. I knit the heel with CC, cut the string and then I pick up stitches on the right side of the heel with the MC, knit the left stitches and pick up stitches on the left side of the heel. The beginning of the round is now at the side of the sock.
It‘s so much fun to watch yout podcast!

Chiagoo has a mini interchangeable sock needles that are a 3 inch and a 2 inch needle. You can also buy those individually. I use one of the 3 inch and one of the 2 inch, which makes a 10 inch, perfect for fingering weight socks. If you cast on with the longer needle it sets you up to have the longer needle in your right hand makes it a more comfortable knit. It’s also great to do your color work with them. Also with the Addi needles their size (1) is a 2.5mm, where Chiagoo’s size (1) is a 2.25mm. I really enjoy your show.

I love sock knitting! I use one 9" circular needle exclusively now, although I started on DPNs, and moved to 2 9" circulars before landing on the one circular method. I taught myself that method organically - I just "knew" I should be able to use one circular - then I saw other people, like The Crazy Sock Lady, using the same method. ChiaoGoo red lace are my all time favorites. The only problem I have with using this technique is that my hands sometimes get crampy if I have a marathon knitting session. Love the podcast!

Mostly I use DPNs for socks, i loke how they click while i knit. But recently I bought flexible DPNs, 2.5mm and 3mm on amazon, and for me they are the best choice for colorwork socks. I used them to make a knee-high full of butterflies socks from "52 weeks of socks" book and it was my first colorwork and it was pretty easy to work with flexible DPNs!
Also I love wearing my aran (10ply) socks in my skechers walking shoes, so soft and cozy! 😄
Jonna's making her left and right socks is just pure logic. About 30 years ago i was already a good knitter only haven't knitted sockes yet, and my grandma in words explained me how to knit socks and she mentioned to make left and right in same maner as Jonna makes them (we were busy working in her garden, so she couldn't show me, but in words she explained very well). Later that year I managed to create my first sock 😄 (though i forgot to make gusset 😅). I beleave all techniques are already out there in the world, we just have to remember them, or use logic to get them back 😊 old recipes that we can find are not very detailed that's why we have to "create" it all over again 😄

Hey, I always knit my socks with the Chiagoo Mini Set. I tried TPN, Magicloop, but these Miniset is just incredible!
So because for one sock you use one short and one long needle, you could also knit 2 socks at the time because you have 4 needles in each size and 3 cables in the set. So you just have to put them together.

I’m not a dedicated sock knitter, but I do knit them sometimes. That Roxanne Richardson tip - the best tip ever! I haven’t tried contrast heels and toes yet because I’m lazy. But this makes it so much easier! Thanks!

I use 2 sets of dpns & knit two socks at a time knitting a few inches at a time on each. The pattern & rows are even & that way I have two completed socks when I’m done.

I'm a fan of using 2 circular needles for my socks. Learned that in a class with Cat Bordi (RIP). I stumbled upon doing my heel contrasts without breaking main color...sometimes these things just happen w/o thinking about it. The idea about making 2 cakes from one 100-gram ball was a super tip!! Love your podcast.😊

Thank you!! I am fairly new sock knitter and appreciate you sharing your experiences.
For the beginning of round on magic loop I simple place my stitch marker before the last stitch of the round so it doesn’t fall off.
The tip about not breaking your main color at the heel is perfect!!! Thanks again for your podcasts! You two are “super” fun to watch. 😉

Love your podcast! I use to knit two socks at a time starting at the cuff on magic loop, but the gusset did not fit my foot. So I switched to knitting two at a time toe up and I love the fit of the sock. Also, I like my socks to be higher on my leg, so my legs don't get cold. By knitting toe up and two at a time, both socks will end at the same place if I run out of yarn. I used Judy's magic cast on, Happy Knits no wrap no gap row heel, and Jeny's stretchy bind off.

    Hi Girls,
Great episode. Lot's of information. Thank you.
I am a continental knitter, I use ChiaoGoo 9" circulars, size 0 thru 4 depending on the yarn. After I got used to these needles, I was able to knit so much faster and not worry about laddering or losing needles out of my work, they really changed my love for sock knitting. I do put my heel stitches on DPN's, I find that goes much faster. Crazy Sock Lady has a great pattern and tutorial for socks on 9" circulars.
I often make two socks at the same time, I just have them on separate needles.
Loved the tip about not cutting the yarn for contrast heel.
    Take care and stay safe.

I also knit with size 1 too and tried 2 16" circs once and loved them too...and will be doing more sock knitting with those as well. Thanks for the tips and tricks. The crazy sock lady is who I followed when I started knitting socks...her videos are great and I too love Denise..earthtone girl...she's wonderful AND her voice is sooo soothing!❤

I enjoy your presentations so much! Jonna, I think you mentioned using magic loop. That was my favourite until yesterday. I had ordered Flexiflips and they arrived yesterday. I love them! You can see where I changed from Magic Loop to Flexiflips on my sock. The stitches became more even! They even have one sharp point and one slightly more rounded point. Some smart cookie designed them! They sure work for me. Cheers!

Hello Kim & Jonna, Thank you for the wonderful tips. I’ve been struggling with the first round of a mitten on magic loop. Today after I watched this podcast, after hearing your magic loop tips, my mitten is on the needles and I’m a happy knitter. I Need to thank Kevin and Ray for referring me to your channel.

Hi Kim & Jonna, I just discovered you two and have been binge watching all of your episodes.
My first sock was actually a Christmas stocking using worsted weight scrap yarn. It was kinda funky looking and I eventually frogged it, but it was a great way to learn sock construction. My first pair of fingering weight socks also were funky looking as I was getting used to my 9” circulars. I eventually frogged them, also. But they were a great learning experience (I think I’m more process knitter than product knitter.)
My favorite sock pattern is the Crazy Sock Lady’s vanilla socks on 9’ circulars. Her tutorials made it so easy to learn to use my 9’ circulars.
My favorite method of knitting socks is top down with slip-stitch heel. I like to use mostly 9’ circulars, switching to magic loop for the heels and the toes. I love Chiao Goo. I use size 1 and cast on 56 stitches. I love the Chiao Goo shorties. I am primarily a continental knitter, and I like putting a 3’ tip on for my right hand and a 2’ tip on for my left hand. The shorties took a whole pair of socks to get used to and get the muscle memory, but now I absolutely love using them. I have used dpns and flexi flips to knit with, but I hate how I seem to constantly drop one of the needles down in the chair and couch cushions. I have done some knitting with 2 circulars, but didn’t love that. So, I definitely prefer small circulars and magic loop. Happy Knitting.

Hello Kim & Jonna! Really enjoy your videos. I got back into knitting when I was in my early 20s, after having learned to knit around the age of 7 or 8. My first project was a pair of socks. Cause why not?!! :) haha. I’m 47 now and have knitted lots of socks over the years. I have tried many methods but I still love my tried and true - DPNs. I have my stitches divided onto 3 needles and knit with a 4th DPN. I knit top down, one at a time. I receive a lot of shade for this. I have a basic pattern memorized and this makes it so easy. I would recommend for new sock knitters is Nancy Bush’s book, Folk Knits. She has a written out pattern that goes row by row. It’s almost like she’s is sitting next to you speaking & helping you along. Happy knitting!

I'm not a sock knitter, purely because I don't wear them. I used to make them for my kids, but they don't wear them now either. I've also been way more into garment knitting since moving to a place where I do actually need them for more than a couple of days each year. 😁
PS - Kim, I hope you're proud of me for starting from the beginning after watching a handful of the latest episodes. 😂

Great episode! Yes, when you knit sock and become more experienced, a lot of thing you can do easily without learning from someone. Being one side has one more row, picking up the stitches with the main color one side ahead of time doesn’t make anything different. What you are saying is all true! More you know makes you free! Sock knitting is magic!!! Thanks for sharing~

I'm a long-time sock knitter, and a *total* dpn fan. "Magic loop" for me feels like "floppy loop" -- whether it's for socks or mitts or whatever. I've tried the tiny (9" or 10") circs but -- even though I'm a "flicker" (I throw with my right forefinger, a variation on the British style of knitting) -- I like something to hang onto. My favourite DPN length is 6", though I can handle 5" ones. Shorter than that there's nothing to hang onto.
RE: Ladders on dpns -- if you purl the first stitch on at least the first round, or in ribbing do the purls first -- there will be a ladder at first but it disappears. This would work for joining in the round with circs too. 🙂

Another great video. I do toe up socks and use magic loop for the toe and heel and 9" in circular for the rest. I put my end of row marker right in the sock and just move it up every inch or so. This is a easier than moving the marker all the time, especially with the 9" circular. Fun how we all have our own way of doing things and they are all right.

hahaha! I do the same thing when knitting socks with colorwork...adjust the placement of the heel so the "seam" is on the inside of both socks. Never really thought about the pattern not being written that way. I just wanted the sock to look more finished. Thanks for bringing that up!

Such a great video! I’ve knit many socks but loved all your tips, especially the contrast heel without cutting MC yarn. I prefer chiagoo magic loop but really want to try the shorty circulars. I never understood the TAAT socks because it doesn’t take less time and 2 balls is too fiddly for me. To keep them the same size, I use a row counter. I know my leg and foot length numbers and always knit to those numbers before starting the heel and toe.
Love the kiddos at the end, they’re adorable!

Love knitting socks and mitts. Learned how on 2 9" but moved on to magic loop even 2-at-a-time. I do love my Flexi Flips a bunch! I have ChiaoGoo interchangeables for sweaters and shawls, but love Hiya Hiya's stabby tips for lace and socks. DPNs are great for tiny projects like toys or Christmas ornaments. I have no use for straights! Maybe if I were to knit a long-term blanket of mitered squares, maybe it would be cool to have dedicated straights, but until that day, I passed on my ancient straight needles to a teen knitter in 2015.

I’ve knit socks with all the needle types. My favorites are magic loop (32” needle) or two 16” needles. Sometimes I’ll knit the pair concurrently with two separate 32” needles. I don’t like two at a time because they weigh the needle down so is hard on the wrists. Socks fly on a 9” or 10” needle but you have to switch to some other needle for the toe. I love you two!

I learned to knit socks on dpns and those needles are still my favourites. Generally I knit 64 stitches on 2.25 needles and prefer metal needles, 6" long and with good points. To put the sock in progress away I wind my yarn 3 or 4 times around each end of the needles when they are held together to prevent the stitches from sliding off. 🇬🇧

I love knitting socks two at a time (TAAT) so I don’t need to keep count to make cuffs or foot the exact same, they just are. Also, when I learn a new technique, e.g. shadow wrap heel, i knit it twice consecutively rather than days/weeks between knitting the new technique. That immediate repetition helps me learn the new technique better. Thanks for all your tips!
