Setting the engine rpm on a honda mower.wmv

  • www.rideonlawnm... This video shows you how you can increase the engine rpm on a Honda lawn mower.
    In this case my engine was only spinning at about 2800rpm, when in fact most small engines run at about 3600rpm. I check the manual that came with the lawnmower and it does state that this engine makes 4Kw or 5.5hp at 3600rpm.
    After adjusting the engine speed up it cuts grass a thousand times better and it drives heaps faster too. You can finf out more information by visiting the link at the top here that takes you to the webpage that has even more modifications that you can do.
    This mower is a Honda self propelled lawn mower model HRU216 21" cut

    For what its worth 3600 rpm is the maximum rated speed and my Honda service manual warns not to exceed 80% of the maximum speed during continuous operation. That's why the are generally set around 2900 rpm. Running higher speeds will shorten the lifespan.

      I just took mine to Honda, it was running at 2200 rpm, so they fixed it and set to 3200rpm. They set to 4000 to start with, then said way too high, so adjusted it again to 3200. So definitely 3800 is way too high

    The engine may develop its rated HP at 3600 RPM, but the governed speed by law for a 21" deck mower is 3456 or less RPM. In most cases the engine should be running in the 30/3200 RPM neighborhood when on high speed.

    Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower th-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.

    this is an old thread. I just spent $10.00 on an HR214 at an estate sale. The guy it belonged to passed away about a decade ago and it has not been started since. It is a clean mower. The oil looked new. He was a drag racer so I am sure he took care of his equipment. I put a little gas in it and on the first pull if fired up and ran like a top.

    If it makes you feel any better, I just took ownership of my dads 25 year old HRU216 self propelled as he no longer needs it with no lawn to mow. It still starts first pull (but I snapped the cord). I'm spending about $100-200 on it because it's worth it and still a better mower than our couple year old Masport with Briggs and Straton. I just put a new throttle plastic lever on it, and the screws holding it on whilst corroded slightly on the outside are brand new shiny stainless on the inside(25 years frickin old). That's where the money is, I can pull a 25 year old mower to bits and live near the ocean and the only rusted out nuts on the whole thing was the exhaust shield. That's more impressive than our 10 year old car, or 5 year old door knobs that are inside our house!
    Sure these mowers have their shortfalls, but they are really well built and designed to last. When it fails, i'll go and buy a new one.
    I'll be sure to look at the RPM and give it a tickle, thanks for your video!

    Many , many thanks for posting this procedure for increasing the revs !I've just bought one of these and they oiled/fuelled it up in the shop , started it and then sent me on my way . This morning ( dry now ) I decided to give it a go , and the revs were quite low compared to my old mower of some 20 years now .......I found the ground speed and cutting torque very poor . So , I've thankfully found your video and made the same adjustments to mine this afternoon . I don't have a functioning tach ( one in the post from Ebay since last week though ... ) but I'm pretty good with estimating revs from years of equipment ownership/usage . Now I'm a happy camper . Why do so many mower sellers not give a damn about service/setup ? They're probably not prepared to move that governor spring . Cheers Mate :-)

    As someone else mentioned, 3600 was a common rating for the engine power at 3600 rpm.
    Very few mowers unless they are over 30 years old are supposes to be at at the number.
    Most mowers are set to 2900 +or - 50 rpm.
    I set self propelled mowers at 2880 and will often set push mowers at 3000 -3050.
    3600 is not only to fast, it is likely a violation of blade tip speed safety laws.
    Besides that, it's just extra wear and tear on engine that will shorten its life and it wasted wastes about 20% more fuel.

    Got my mower checked at Honda. It was at 2200rpm , 2 weeks old commercial self propelled . The setting was way too low, so they adjusted it to 4000rpm and said that’s way too high , so adjusted it again to 3200rpm. So if you have a new Honda, I wouldn’t go higher than 3200rpm. 3800rpm will wear the motor out according to Honda mechanics. I haven’t tried my mower out yet, since been fixed. But I’m sure 1000 extra rpm will make a huge difference.

      All manufacturers have a limit on safe RPM to run engines
      Look it up and adjust as needed but not any more than that 😊

    The engine is capable of 4kw (5.5 hp), but like almost all small engines (and many diesel engines, especially in caterpillar equipment) it is governed down to reduce wear and tear on the engine. having made your adjustment, you get more power now, but you will have it for less time, if that makes sense.

      the mower deck will rust out long before that happens, the wheels will crack, the cables will seize and break, the carb bowl will rust out.. these are 2 or 3 year throw away mowers

    Nope - at least not for the GVC160 engines...
    Shop manual for this engine specs are 2,950-3,100 rpm.
    Keep those blade sharp and maintain the lubricant for the rear wheel adjuster bushings - they are a fairly frequent Honda power sucker and can be really dragging before you notice it.

    Could the lower RPMs been intentionally set so that Honda could meet environmental requirements? or "Honda consumes less fuel!"

      BfSkinnerPunk yes, also helps Honda’s legendary “runs forever” department. Less wear through reduced rpm/ lower compression.

  • @breeze787

    Honda intentionally has a lower rpm setting for their mowers that doesn't affect their performance at all. The lower RPM say in the 2600 to 3000 rpm range allows the motor to not only last longer but is also a lot quieter? The lower rpm doesn't affect cut or how fast you cut. I just bought a new car and at 65 mph my engine is less than 2000 RPM. Where my older car was sitting at almost 3000 RPM at the same speed. I think that is an advancement in technological design to improve overall performance and longevity.
    But what if you are cutting overgrown grass that was over a foot high? Honda allows you to make an adjustment by moving that spring to the next hole to increase the RPM so that the tall grass doesn't constantly kill the engine as you shove grass down its throat whether you are bagging or mulching.
    Honda superior engineering & design in every way. Please refrain from circumventing Hondas engineers who has already thought about whatever other concerns you had about their product. Just trust that Honda has got it right. I do.

      @non-typicalhunter6776 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      breeze787 haha, you act like the people designing it are the ones who build it..lol...honda designed it to run 3600rpm, the schmuck who put it together obviously didnt put much pride in it or it wouldnt of been off to begin with. Stop telling folks to not fix assembly issues, its not your dollar anyways.

    • @breeze787
      @breeze787 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There wasn't anything wrong with assembly. Honda engineers instruct assemblers to place the spring in in the lower rpm hole intentionally because it will neither hinder performance and the mower will consume less fuel & be much quieter.
      Please refrain from fucking up your Honda anymore than is required.

  • @dallasnellen

    3600rpm is rediculous by the way. I am looking for a way to get mine to spin to 10 000rpm plus or at least in the 8000k region. Most small 4 stroke motors these days pull 12000 to 20000 rpm . Mine is due for a rebuild. There must be someone who does an aftermarket carburetor/cams/valve springs/high compression piston for these?....and also I am thinking that ditching the standard carby and moving to a flat slide bike carburetor with the right jetting would be better... the standard flow is totally gay, totally underpowered, especially when mulching and in 2nd with throttle pinned... for me, in it's current form, this mower sucks!

    • @dallasnellen
      @dallasnellen 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      and don't give me "law states must be 3200 blah blah rpm max" ... if a blade can't be balanced to spin at 10000 rpm and if the drive gear can't handle it, and if the steel is too weak, then it must be changed as well. There is no excuses for weak engineering designs or stupid laws based on weak design. I want to mow my lawn faster, less often (taller grass) and power though it without hesitation from the engine. These mowers are rubbish!

    • @tregforsyth1969
      @tregforsyth1969 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nitrous oxide and bypassing the governor would be a good easy way to start, and would be easy to switch over to your next mower after it blows up. P.S. drink beer and wear shin guards and steel toes.
