Great introductory lesson into a Depth Finder. You covered a lot of the basics and you have got to be one of the best teachers of fishing in general that I have ever seen. Bill Dance does a great job teaching people how to fish and as far as I am concerned you are just as good as Bill or better in some instances. Since it has been 5+ years since you have done this particular video it may be time for a refresher on Depth Finders and how they work to help us find fish. I know you are starting a series on "Beginning Fishing" and that is awesome and please don't stop. Just a suggestion from a fellow fisherman that really enjoys watching your videos and learning how to Bass fish even better. Something that Bill Dance does a lot that I feel helps teach those of us that can't picture things under water well is diagrams or illustrations that help depict better what you might be teaching. For Example how to fish a crank bait across a point and what your boat position is in relation to the point. The illustrations that they used to have in the Bassmaster Magazines back in the early 90's to help show how baits move through cover and such. Just suggestions and you are doing a fantastic job!!!
10-4 Thanks very much. That's takes away the possibility of clairvoyance and gives me hope. I'm subscribed to you and your videos are wonderful besides taking away some of the mystery gives me even more reason to respect folks of your caliber.
I started fishing for bass in local ponds about 4 years ago. Just walking the bank and honing my skills. 2 summers ago I purchased a Jon boat and started going out on my local lake. It gave me access to a lot more water, but I still find myself mostly fishing shallow water and up and down the banks. Ive decided my next purchase is going to be a fish finder so I can finally learn whats off shore and hone my skills in deeper water. Thank you for the tips. Should be a fun summer trying to figure this out for myself.
I made sure of it by looking on my Side Imaging. It gives me a 3D image of the stuff. Plus I've been fishing that spot for years and I know it very well.
Take your time. I fished from the bank for 12 years before I got my first boat. (10ft jon boat) Plus a boat is just a hole in the lake you toss your money into. The bigger the boat the bigger the hole.
A distinct layer in a large body of water, in which temperature changes more rapidly with depth than it does in the layers above or below. This occurs in the summer. This layer will have more dissolved oxygen and it will be the depth were most of the fish in the lake will be holding at.
Knowing little about how to read my 346c DI, I learned a lot here...my lake is soft bottomed with a maximum depth of 11ft so the points made will help me understand my lake better when the ice disappears. Thanks!
best video i have seen yet on how to read a "fish" finder, good thing i use a humminbird too haha! thanks for the video, maybe next vid show what you find on the electronics then fish it and see how it goes :)
Hi there! First time watching your videos! I will watch more!!! This was very informative, I bought a boat.. First one! And it came with an Eagle Fish Finder. First time using a finder. No manual (of course)... The transducer is located on the back of the boat... And well, I kept fishing behind the boat. Thinking that's where it was aimed! Hahaha! Now I know... I will watch more videos thanks for posting!
Depth finders have always been a mystery to me. I'm thinking about getting the Humminbird Fishin' Buddy as a starter to put on my Sevylor HF360. I like that it has the side view. I think it'll help me find fish in the shallower waters & Humminbird is well known for their great customer service. Haven't been fishing in a loooong while. I want my boy to love it as much as I do so I want to get good at it again before he is old enough to start fishing. Thanks for the great in depth vid! (badomdom)
hey, i have an old fish finder that my grandpa gave me after he got his new boat. all the videos i can find on reading fish finders are of color sonars. the one i have is a grey scale. if you could do a video on reading and setting up greyscale fish finders i think it would be really helpful for a lot of fisherman that may be on a budget that would be really helpful.
I love watching your videos. I have learned a lot from you. I have an old Lowrance LMS 480 that I am trying to figure out. It is older and black and white. Do you have any old videos of one like this.
Mr. Gene, can u do a video on boating tips? Like working a footcontrolled trolling motor while fishing, how to stay on fishing and not worrying about the boat or trolling motor, just starting tournaments and need all the edge I can get.
Another excellent video! I was wondering if in future videos you could incorporate more fish finder tips. For example, I believe in one of your videos you talked about being on a shallower hump or possibly you were shallow and it become much deeper quickly. Would it be possible to point these features out while you're fishing? Thank you so much!
I can't think of a way to teach that. Those skill come with just doing them. Every person does it different. So it boils down to whatever works for you. I might be able to do one on boat position but that's something that I'm still working on myself.
You mentioned the thermocline and cover is this just for bass of other species? Here in montana our lakes hold lake trout, perch, walleye, pike etc and bass and some. Did well on bass this weekend it was an early bite though then they turned off.
Could you do a more in depth video on fish finders I've never used one and will buying one in march would love how to tell she'll bars from flats and points... love your videos keep up the good work and thank you
I'm looking for my first fish finder on my jon boat. Right now I'm looking at the Lowrance Mark-4 with the color DSI which is running about $200. Is the DSI worth the extra money compared to a garmin or humminbird that is gray scale 5" screen with dual beam and sonar running about $140s. Just wondering if the DSI makes a big difference in looking for structure in a lake. Trying to not spend over $200 on a unit so the Lowrance is about as high as I'm willing to go.
I have a finder on a canoe. I used it for the first time this past Sunday. The GPS on the unit said we got up to around 3.8mph. I had it running at 200kHz and sometimes at 83kHz and saw virtually nothing. The lake is man-made. Though that day was really an unproductive day, I still got to use the new toy. Was I using the fishfinder wrong or is it just the time of the year? The water still isn't optimum temps(55-57f at the boat). I found some baitfish that the carp were jumping for but no signs of bass or other fish. At some times during the day, we went over something that appeared to be attached to the bottom but formed a dense area of segmented vertical lines(several feet tall). I thought it could be a tree or some old dead grass/vegetation. There were at times many echos but none in the form of arches or distinctive schools. I am still not sure of the best frequency to run the finder at such a slow travel speed.
Quagmire88 Unless I'm fishing deeper than 12 ft I use my fish finder to find things that will hold fish. Like that tree you found. In shallow water, the cone is so narrow that the only thing the finder is good for is reading the bottom and finding cover. 83kHz is your widest angled signal so it is best in shallow water but it's not great.
Oh ok that's what I was thinking. I think I am just having trouble differentiating the echos I am receiving. I know what the baitfish look like, and have recognized that right away. But I will just have to use it more to get a better sense of how it works. Oh, and the unit I have is the Lowrance Elite-5HDI Thanks for the quick response and all the vids. Keep them coming.
Flukemaster mine is 20° cone angle offers a wide fish detection area of up to 60º mounted on the rear of my boat so when i see a school of fish how do i know where exactly to cast? would it be directly under the transducer ?
You're a very smart guy and I believe that what you're saying is 100% accurate but I just want to know how you know this. How did you verify your interpretations of "some of these are baitfish and some is part of the submerged tree"? Just curious.
Gene, aka Fluke, you'll have to come over here to the Big G & fish with me. I love your videos. They are all very useful & informative. Thank you! PS Wonder what that new Raymarine Dragon costs? I have a Lowrance 5, HD DI w/lake chart, but only have a HB 150 B&W on the front which I need to replace with a Color DI.
Any fishfinder that you think will be substantial. Also I finish the Tennessee River a lot. Cuba landing. Around new Johnsonville and crooked Creek Marina. A lot of Ledge fishing. I just bought a brand-new bass boat and I like to know. What would you say to what I would need to use come springtime around that area of water. One other thing when are you going to make new videos. You are fun to watch.
First make sure you get a color unit. It will give you more information. If you can afford it or if you are willing to be patient and save a little more money then get a unit that has GPS and at least a Down Imaging. This will greatly improve your ability to locate fish holding structure and come back to it time and time again
Question on Thermocline. I'll ask this as clearly as I can, maybe give a couple examples of my question. Say you find thermocline at 15 ft depth, where do you start looking for fish. I know so much depends on conditions & time of year but what makes you start in certain places? Examples: (main lake point/flat that is 15' to bottom), (water that has structure 15' deep but any depth to bottom), or do you find the thermocline that is near any type of structure (bridge, rip/rap, ledges) near it so fish can stay near thermocline but move to these places to feed & return? Hope that came out ok cause it is a very confusing process trying to put together a good game plan. I love the videos, very instructive & easy to take your advice straight to the water. Thanks alot.
Jeffrey Keck The thermocline is going to be at the same depth in that entire area, I look for where it meets a point or flat or something that offers the bass a place to hid and ambush it's food. I'll fish all the way to about 10ft above the thermocline depending on visibility.
Good Video ! I have a Matrix 17 and have a question that you may can answer for me. When I turned it on this past Monday, the temp never showed up on it, and I never could get it to come back up due to losing my instruction manual, and lack of knowledge also... Can you guide me how to get it back on ? Thanks for your help...
hey my friend how are you!!.. i wanna ask you if theres any model of hummindbird that i could use on saltwater.. wich one should i buy? because i need at least 1500 ft deep, and also maybe like a combo, but i live in Costa Rica central america... so.. the charts for this country and maps will change and maybe hummindbird doesnt have the charts and maps for this zone.. so what you you recoomend? i would like the 688ci HD combo or 386 but i dont know if they could work for me..

Plus, with a kayak, you can paddle straight over weeds and what not. Perfect for fishing slop with weedless frogs for bass and pike. And, contrary to popular belief, kayaks ARE HARD TO TIP OVER. It's canoes you have to be careful of.
I can't figure out if your in say 20' of water so that makes a 20' cone in 83. Now you see a fish on the bottom is that fish 10' to the left 10' to the right or directly under you I get front to back but not side to side. I can't understand looking at 3 D on a 2 D screen.
How can tell the bait schools from the trees.. Here in Florida we have clumps of floating grass and grass that is under the water, also there are water hyacinths that break off and float under the water that can not be seen from the surface. How can they be differentiated from bait schools?
Thomas Harrell The best way I know how is to spend time checking what you see. Each object has it's differences. Milfoil doesn't look like hydrilla doesn't look like a tree, doesn't look like a bush. You just have to remember the subtle differences to be able to make an educated guess.
Get a kayak. Kayaks allow you to move very quickly (in comparison to wading, or fishing from a float tube. You can get going pretty quickly in a kayak, probably 12-20 miles per hour without too much effort). It allows you to fish deep water that you can't access from the shore. It is also far quieter than a noisy bass boat or jon boat with a trolling motor. It's also much cheaper! Yes sir, I'd rather fish off a kayak than a jon boat or bass boat, as long as i'm not fishing in h20 with gators
I was using a fish finder once nd we had a motor nd every time we started picking up speed it said there was a ton of fosh but we found out after an hour it was the bubbles or something offf the motor
Jonathan Healy Turn off the Fish ID. It is worthless. Make sure your transducer is mounted correctly and then take the time to learn what you are seeing. It will happen. But it takes time.
hi can you tell me in winter time cold ,,,,,, water depth deep maybe 60 to 120 feet would I find the fish feeding above or below the thermocline ,,,, and were also would the baitfish be ,,,,,,,,,,,, I am trying to catch walleye and strippers in deep water but cannot find the baitfish ,,,,,,,,, the lakes are so deep and I am not sure if I should fish below the thermocline or above it and if so by how far either way
if there is no thermocline in winter ,,,,, and I am fishing a very deep lake would warmer water be in shallow water or deep water then ? im trying to locate the baitfish ,,,,,,, and don't know of there in shallower water were the sun may hit sand or rocks to warm it up
riff724 riff724 in the winter ur lake will do what they call "turn over" and when that happens the warmer water will be deeper. But on bright sunny days when the top of the water column warms the fish will move up to warmer water if it heats up enough.

I agree with you. I have a few plans to accomplish this in the future. It's comments like yours that help me improve my videos. Thank you.
Thanks Gwen. I'm glad I could help. Hopefully I've made a few more videos that can help you catch more bass.
Them trees looked like a productive spot, bait on top, cover on bottom, close to channel, thermocline depth. Thanks for the run down!
10-4 Thanks very much. That's takes away the possibility of clairvoyance and gives me hope. I'm subscribed to you and your videos are wonderful besides taking away some of the mystery gives me even more reason to respect folks of your caliber.

a jig, Carolina rig or crankbait that will hit the structure is a good way to figure out what you are passing over aswell.

Thank you. Expect to see even more of this type of stuff this year.
The thermocline usually doesn't form until the heat of the summer. So your just looking for it at the wrong time of year.
Thanks, I actually tried to fish it but I got surprised by a 4 hour long thunderstorm. I didn't think I'd ever be able to make it back to the ramp.
Thanks Flukmstr, great answer and fully understand.
Thanks, Good luck.
oh and every fish finder is a little different but most read the best between 3 and 10 mph depending on the ping speed that you have set.
Hi Gene, hope you are well. I have an “off topic” question. What type of camera do you use while fishing?
The speed is at the bottom left hand corner of the fish finder.
Great video! Thanks! Is there a way to tell trees from fish if all you have is grayscale?
Could you do a more in depth video on fish finders I've never used one and will buying one in march would love how to tell she'll bars from flats and points... love your videos keep up the good work and thank you
Good stuff! Thanks for the info!!
Hey Gene, do you still do guided fishing trips? If you do, is there a website or way to get in touch with you to set up one?
My Flukemaster Facebook page.
thank ya, sir

Guntersville is my favorite lake. I try to get there at least once a year.
Thanks for making this video.
I just got one of these for free new in the box. Thanks for all the info
Also how fast were you going to get all that? Is there a speed that is better then others, like would the fish finder read the bottom better?
Why does there appear to be two thermoclines starting at 4:10?
That's the bottom of the lake
Hey gene!. What would you say. be the better fish fineder?.
Ray Luther I don't know. What fish finders do you want me to compare?
Any fishfinder that you think will be substantial. Also I finish the Tennessee River a lot. Cuba landing. Around new Johnsonville and crooked Creek Marina. A lot of Ledge fishing. I just bought a brand-new bass boat and I like to know. What would you say to what I would need to use come springtime around that area of water. One other thing when are you going to make new videos. You are fun to watch.
Do u have any suggestions on new electronics on a budget? Bass fishing only for my new 94 stratos

helpful but if u could make a video on one of the lower-end fish finders similar to an x-4 by lowrance
Hi Flukemaster! So I have a Hummingbird Fish Finder 120 and i don't get why the screen projects to the left even though it's not moving?
that was very helpful man thaks alot!!!!
i got a question you said the dark black would mean rock and such does that mean say light grey would be mud/sand
Not sand but mud or soft bottom.
Hey gene can you describe the thermocline more in depth. How exactly do you determine the thermocline or see that your unit is showing in
hey my friend how are you!!.. i wanna ask you if theres any model of hummindbird that i could use on saltwater.. wich one should i buy? because i need at least 1500 ft deep, and also maybe like a combo, but i live in Costa Rica central america... so.. the charts for this country and maps will change and maybe hummindbird doesnt have the charts and maps for this zone.. so what you you recoomend? i would like the 688ci HD combo or 386 but i dont know if they could work for me..

Hi Fluke, just baught a Garmin Echo 200, for my first fishfinder. Any good?
+Trevor van Vuren Don't know. I've never even seen one.
A standard fish finder only shows you what is under the boat. The shallower you are the less it shows.
I can't put a link up here but paste QnIxm9ujVXI into the search box.
How do you know where a fish or tree is in a 60-100' cone or better? Is it better to run a short cone?
***** when trying to pin point a target it is always better to switch to a smaller cone.
very helpful! thank you!
Maximized Bass Thanks
What model depth finder is it and is it also a gps?
I take it you are using the "sonar"setting?I am still learning my Hbird
+Rick Becker also what Hz is best for finding thermocline
Ci potrebbe essere un modo per ottenere lo script dal video tradotto in italiano.
THANKS for the info!!!
+Benjamin Fourman You're welcome
Very helpful thanks!
Would mine still work like yours even know mine is a older version

Is it true that crawfish think fish can fly?
aww darnit! well hopefully it will be an upcoming video sometime soon!
what should i keep my sensitivity at or what do you keep yours at?
nathan begin I like to adjust mine sometimes but I usually keep it between 65 and 75%.
Can you make a video or if you have one send me the link please on how to use a bait casting reel
I can't figure out if your in say 20' of water so that makes a 20' cone in 83. Now you see a fish on the bottom is that fish 10' to the left 10' to the right or directly under you I get front to back but not side to side. I can't understand looking at 3 D on a 2 D screen.
And just say 50'or more would just make the problem worse.
what model humming bird is this?

Sonar tech changes very quickly. Now even stand alone consumer units under 800 have CHIRP and DSI and side scan.
great info

Watched some other videos and guys are saying things you call trees are baitfish balling up. Very confusing!
Not enough room here to explain. Do a search on Wikipedia.
But it takes time.

hi can you tell me in winter time cold ,,,,,, water depth deep maybe 60 to 120 feet would I find the fish feeding above or below the thermocline ,,,, and were also would the baitfish be ,,,,,,,,,,,, I am trying to catch walleye and strippers in deep water but cannot find the baitfish ,,,,,,,,, the lakes are so deep and I am not sure if I should fish below the thermocline or above it and if so by how far either way
riff724 riff724 There is no thermocline in the winter.
if there is no thermocline in winter ,,,,, and I am fishing a very deep lake would warmer water be in shallow water or deep water then ? im trying to locate the baitfish ,,,,,,, and don't know of there in shallower water were the sun may hit sand or rocks to warm it up
riff724 riff724 in the winter ur lake will do what they call "turn over" and when that happens the warmer water will be deeper. But on bright sunny days when the top of the water column warms the fish will move up to warmer water if it heats up enough.
Read your manual. No problem.
