    In this video I give you my verdict about the Astronomik CLS filter for reducing light pollution in astrophotography. Is it worth it's price tag? Does it actually work? I will tell you how to get beautiful milky way photos even from the city! I talk about how to get the best results in milky way photography given the conditions you're in. I show my sample images taken in Bortle class 7 area with and without the filter so you can judge for yourself!
    Let me know what you think in the comments!
    Here's the link to RAW images that I've taken without the filter - you can try to process them differently to produce a better final image in which case definitely reach out to me either via comment here or on social media (links to my profiles at the bottom)

    Hey kamil, thanks for the video. I bought both the optolong L-Pro and the Astronomik CLS-CCD clip for my full frame. The spectral pattern for the narrowband ranges are roughly the same except the L-Pro allows few more spikes of light.
    Given that led light pollution is broadband how much does the cls filter work for sky glow and to me the biggest question is is this better or should I shoot L-3 + dedicated Ha filter and do HaRGB on my astromodified camera? What do you think? I plan on returning both these filters for now.

    I have a canon 70-200 2.8...50mm 1.8...55-250 3.5 and 18 -135 3.5....would any of these work for astro photography with my EOS R?

    • @kamilkp
      @kamilkp  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can do astrophotography with every lens however with better or worse results. From your collection i’d say:
      - 70-200mm f/2.8 : good for deep sky photos on a tracker
      - 50mm f/1.8 : good for milky way shots on full frame, can produce good results without a tracker
      - the remaining ones could be used with a tracker as well but I’d stick to those 2 I mentioned above

    quick answer: no, and yes.
    If you don't modify your camera to be able to see H-alpha emission then no, these filters aren't for you.
    If yu want to photograph things that aren't in the sky, no
    If you want to photograph large broad band objects, still no.
    The CLS and UHC are for cameras that have been modified or for astro dedicated cameras, they work poorely on reflection nebulas and galaxies, milky way included.
    the cut off from 550 to 650nm is just way too aggressive.
    for the kind of general use most photographers consider astrophotography (night landscape would be a better term) an L-Pro filter is what you want, not a CLS.
    Not bashing on astronomik, they make good filters, but they just don't make an optolong L-pro equivalent.
    Tbh, for night landscape on a tripod i personally would forego astro filters alltoghether and switch to the clear sky/ clear night filter you can get from Nisi, haida and the like

    • @Gekiko7167
      @Gekiko7167 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The CLS ccd is only for modified cameras while the CLS works for both.

    • @unrealspetznaz
      @unrealspetznaz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The need to astro modify a camera to see h-alpha is a myth. Regarding filters, there are light pollution filters like Astronomiks CLS and more "complex" multi band pass filters such as Optolongs or IDAS, which are more selective in the wavelengths they cut. However, do not mistake selectivity for better performance. Performance DEPENDS on the nature of the ligt pollution in the place you shoot from. Astronomik CLS may perform way better than IDAS depending on the situation, and multi band pass filters also mess with colour anyway.

    • @karcoms
      @karcoms 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@unrealspetznaz makes sense. So I'm thinking of getting a Astronomik L-3 ir cut filter and dedicated h-alpha filter for my astro modded camera. That way I can truly use the h-alpha for what it is meant for. And for milky way I anyway have to use the L-3 filter but do I still need a filter to bring out the milky way in post? Thoughts?

    • @kamilkp
      @kamilkp  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, not at all. I think this curtain is just the mechanical shutter itself. However there is a caveat with the RF 35mm f/1.8 macro lens. Have you seen this video: th-cam.com/video/sKcNDIe1JOI/w-d-xo.html ?

    • @kamilkp
      @kamilkp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The color of the filter doesn’t matter. It reflects different colors depending on the angle of incoming light. A CLS filter is good for broadband targets like: wide field milky way, galaxies, clusters, comets or reflection nebulae
