Ginger was no happy on England..not in Germany, not in France or Usa...here, ridin, drivin and playin, in this adventure travel, you can see him always smiling...even just changing a flat tyre...GINGER WAS HAPPY IN AFRICA!
Oh yes, looks fascinating! I loved the live album he cut with Fela Kuti and his band around this time - Baker was instrumental in getting Fela a distribution deal in the UK and Europe - and I knew about his pioneering interest in African drumming and Afro rock music. This is going to be so much fun to watch!
the drum beats are similar to Middle Eastern drum beats . hell it's Arab drumming . see the Camels see the Islamic architecture . these beats are cyclical and more in 2/4 time signatures than 4/4 march type beats like European music . the Africans / Arab style of warfare is different than the regimental warfare of mid-evil Europe . where this is war there is drums 🐫🐪
Drums, drums, drums. "Ginger Baker in Africa" fantastic film (1971) His musical trek through the continent - love his surreal hipster narration. A period piece. Fela Kuti shows up. Great dancing too! Anyone for tennis?
How excited we were when we heard that a white dude drove to Lagos all the way from London...... Crazy!!!!! Then I say him at the shrine, you know, "yeye de smell". Mega thanks for uploading.
Ginger was the Avatar of Drumming for the western world in these times until now for me and I learned such a lot of im... I had the great luck to see him live with many different formations exept Cream! I will never forget him, even when he could be a real asshol sometimes. Thank You forever!
This is Soo much more pleasing to listen to than buddy rich. He was a great drummer, but he was Soo fast that he always sounded the same. It's like when someone shreds on the guitar. If it's done to much or for too long then it all sounds the same.
If Ginger, a drummer who can keep four different limbs playing simultaneously, calls African drumming complex...he was also a polo pony enthusiast! RIP
Part of what made him so great was that percussion was his PULSE. I suppose that can be said for all of us, but he recognized and embraced and channeled it.
He had a Jensen FF, which was a sort of four wheel drive Aston Martin, so it might not have been completely ridiculous, except it did about five miles to a gallon of petrol.
Simplesmente demais! Automatico fantástico. Ginger Baker buscando as raízes, encontrando e mostrando para o mundo. Grande postagem. Agradecimentos south of Brasil.
The others have been relying on spreading lies since the beginning of time after trading for the vital resources of life from the people who just dance.
I'm glad Ginger did all this, it must have been so good for him to meet up with the people he looked up to as drummers, I remember when it first came on our TV screens. Its great to see him so chilled out.
Thank you so much! been looking for years! This is such an important piece of music history. That scene with Fela and the band playing in the rain soaked night club is so moving for some reason, just the raw authenticity of it all, to know this happened somewhere in time. the passion and energy in that scene is outstanding.
What an amazing find! Thank you. I didn't know it existed until today. I've known of his collaboration in Nigeria with Fela Kuti for some years, but this is is a bit of unforgettable history 50 years on. I even had a single from a jukebox that I gave to a musician a few years ago.
@RonaldWilliams-qh7zc I do not understand why this feels necessary to some people. The internet is such a nano... I think we all experience a multitude of feelings and emotions within each day (duh); and I believe that a person can be viewing something and be at a certain fractional period of time in their day - and how they feel at that moment of writing a comment shadows the comment almost wholly. If that person upstairs here in this comment section were feeling blessed, superfluous, happy to the point of gushing; his comment would have been something like; "Oh, the joyous freedom of the desert air in Ginger's hair is so effervescent! I yearn for those times of free love and harmony." But, something has him all fu*k*d off this particular morning. 🤔 Just a thought.
Well done! I saw this when it was first aired and been looking ever since. Aspect ratio is wrong so Ive downloaded it and corrected that, and in my collection. Thanks.
This is amazing. Been a fan my whole life of Cream- and today I stumble upon this. Filmed when I was a one year old😁. A cultural and historical jem. Fantastic.
Goes to show Africa is the true Motherland. For an Englishman, Ginger, and a Native American, like myself, to feel so compelled by its music and culture.
We should keep in mind, when overly romantizicing things, Ginger was looking for a tax shelter. He didn't pay his taxes and had to sell the ranch. Also, I'm part Native American, but this has nothing at all to do with that. I have my American culture which is plenty enough to compel me.
@@alwilson3204This period has fuck all to do with his ranch or any supposed tax evasion. Anyway, he lost his money and property (including his Lagos studio because of EMI and corruption) many times over and sideways long before the ranch. He sure as hell wasn't in it for the money either - in fact, ask anyone, he was a walking financial disaster.
And with a rare passion, he went to the source... good on him. I remember a story where Paul McCartney went to visit Fela Kuti in Nigeria, and it is said that the Nigerian's promptly stole his luggage, and that Fela pulled a gun on him thinking he was here to steal his musicians... welcome to Nigeria, Sir Paul... but order was restored and they became quick friends... Also, I've read that even James Brown brought his players to listen to these guys, Fela, and Marshall Allen, to try to get that "feel"... that's pretty amazing.
Just thought of Ginger the past couple of weeks. His days with Fela. His days in Africa. He died; well he beat the system despite his financially ill state due to recklessness that abandoned him in his last days - but his recklessness enpowered him nearly 99% of his live (perhaps a bit optimistic.) JJ
How the hell can you not love anybody that hops in a Range Rover and drives from London to Nigeria? I don't care if he did beat a guy over the head with a crutch.
Under house arrest “ escorted to the fort where The Combined Services carried out a thorough search To their great surprise they found nothing they shouldn’t have “ Ginger did not say that they didn’t HAVE anything they shouldn’t .. just that nothing was found

That’s it in s nutshell
Africa was absolutely rocking in the 70's.
From rock star in Cream and Blind Faith to explorer of musical traditions in Africa--one of the coolest career moves ever made.
he was the first who seemed to have dun something else than buying a tittenhurst park with his earnings
Afrika! That's what gave Ginger his biggest and brightest smile. The finest red-haired afrikan percussionist not born there.
Historic! Absolutely beautiful part of history. Bless Ginger Baker! A man who truly lived & played this life.

my son walked into the room and at 03:21 and said "are you watching Jimi Hendrix again??" LOL
Not only was Baker a great musician, he was an explorer as well!
I agree, he was not afraid of following his heart, that's a true explorer.
Loved it! Ginger embraced the origins of drumming to its roots.
Oh yes, and the live album he did/produced together with Fela Kuti and his big band is amazingly powerful!

So bad ass... he went to the source...
This world is lost we'd never get this on TV now. Plus ginger seems very different here compared to that doc.
Saw him in Central Park with some of these guys. Started pouring rain and his thunder echoed through the whole area. Truly unforgettable!
Schaefer Music Festival?
Ginger Baker is a force of nature on the drums wild and primitive which is the best.
I want to be as grooved out as these guys

I saw this on Pluto TV at 2am and had no clue what the hell he was saying but I couldn't stop watching... "150 degrees Fahrenheit.... Speeeed"
Ginger Baker: legendary rock drummer to the world, African tour guide and ethnomusicologist to me.
You can tell that everybody is having a great time. :)
From memory, he attempted this in an Aston Martin originally, which lasted about an hour LOL.
Sounds about right
He had a Jensen FF, which was a sort of four wheel drive Aston Martin, so it might not have been completely ridiculous, except it did about five miles to a gallon of petrol.

Speaking on Algeria.........Ginger Baker and Tinariwen or Imarhan would have been epic also. But his work with Fela was out of this world
