How does this happen? So many people, not a duff note, not a skewed rhythm, no momentum drops, 9 minutes before Seun opens his mouth - the pressure to not mess up all that went before! And all underpinned by one drummer throwing in all these extra fills with everyone else depending on him to drive the pace. The pressure on him! Music is some sort of alternative universe! Brilliant.

actually performing in a group you feel the power in the sync and it's not terrifying at all, compared to performing solo :) any small mishaps just blends in with the rest the group energy actually drives you towards performing better yourself, endorphins from the shared vibe and all that, it is actually pretty much the best thing to experience :)

      @httohot 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

@@johnroach1101 These musicians are AMAZING and deserve way way way more praise and accolades but the main praise should go to Fela Kuti the original creator. He was a nigerian artist during turbulent times in Africa and a revolutionary of sorts. His music was his way of spreading his activism to the most people. Credit and praise should go to a man who was willing to risk it all in such an environment in order to make good music and spread a good message. Keep in mind that he lived through a period of time when the government was actively trying to commit genocide against the Igbo people (colonizer supplied jets literally targeted civilians and children were literally cut out of Igbo womens stomachs)
Fela, as an Igbo man, made music about all of this and more because he was a brave visionary. The government even had his mother thrown off the second story of her apartment but he was not dettered.
I have to vent so if you're interested in history read on, Fela Kuti's fight is not over, not by a long shot. If you want to see what I mean read on and look at these videos
      th-cam.com/video/DtzmiMD6e1c/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/_Fyu6-9o1mU/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/qr5_X6msRmI/w-d-xo.html
The British colonizers more or less created this situation when they would only allow independence under conditions that allowed them to maintain their economic interests at the expense of Nigeria's stability and welfare.
What they did to Nigeria was basically like forcing Germany and France (with their different cultures, religions and languages) to become one country as a trade off for gaining independence. This is done because there is Gold in France, but the colonizer knows the proud French wont allow the colonizer to exploit the gold. In response the colonizer literally only allows them to be independent only if they can merge the countries together and place a German leader in control of this new country. THE GERMANS HAVE STATED THEY DONT WANT INDEPENDENCE but the Germans, having an Islam based culture that values following those in power(no matter what), of course agree. Naturally with their culture being as it is, the Germans decide to take it as a sign that the colonizers want Germans to be in control of the new country FOREVER creating conflict that has lasted till today which includes a civil war and attempted genocide. Meanwhile, all the profits made from the Gold in France goes to a small handful of powerful people in Germany. Those profits do not even go to helping the frankly uneducated poor German people. Even today 60 years later the poorest part of the new merged country is Germany despite the majority of the money from Gold going to Germany.
spread love and peace brothers and sisters

It's nice to hear Nigerian people like you "legitimate" the whole thing, cause sometimes beyond the "afrobeat" label, in Europe for instance (i'm french) some bands betray either the spirit or the sound, or simply aren't up to scratch...it's the best way to bury Fela a second time...I met Fela's music in the 80's, here in Paris, my girlfriend was able to dance on “Shakara” or “Lady” all night long, turning the record over and over. Then I met two Nigerian mates who'd come here to study, who introduced me to King Sunny Ade.....Then I made a long trip to Africa, although I couldn't go as far as the Shrine ;+), but I did cross the Sahara, Burkina, Mali and the Ivory Coast. Music and this trip opened the eyes and mind of the 24-year-old kid that I was....Music is the best passport, it opens borders in the mind...Just look at all the nationalities of the commentators here! greetings from Paris!

This drummer here... Totally possessed by the spirit of Tony Allen.
I am not a music historian. In his formative years, I learnt the great Tony Allen, the originator of Afrobeat drum beats, once graced the people of Enyimba City Aba, with his mesmerizing skills. Listening to Afrobeat drums one can hear the distinct connection between Afrobeat drums and the "Ariaria style" drum rhythm. Ariaria so named after a small part of Aba where this rhythm is original to. The rich Ariaria style is often heard in Igbo praise songs.
Kudos to this drummer for keeping the pace and rhythm alive for this entire length. 🔥🔥🔥

  • @enobmah1955

I agree about this drummer......he must have perfect time, as Ginger Baker used to say. I do not think I would have learned about Newen Afrobeat, had I not been a lifelong fan of Ginger Baker, and even when he left England for Nigeria and set up his 16 track recording studio in the 1970's in , and his alliance with Fela Kuti began, I then came to know of what a giant Fela Kuti was for Nigerian music, and also African music in general. In looking for Fela Kuti on the internet, I was so happy to have met with the sound and the powerful rhythm of Newen .Afrobeat.
I am very sorry that their popularity is not very much in the United States. What are Newen Afrobeat doing now? I see they are alive and well and all the members are solid and unified year after year, but there are no recordings of their music being played on American radio, they are almost unknown in even New York.
I am sad to say, I have been a fan of theirs for maybe 2 years now,but I still have not known who they are. Their names are not mentioned anywhere in English publications, I never hear of their music being played anywhere despite how enjoyable it make us feel.
The few websites that are supposed to be dedicated to Newen Afrobeat I have sent notes to, asking for information for when they tour America and where a person can get CD's of their music, but there is no responding person on the other end!!
Very frustrating!!! But maybe it is better that they do not get too fantastically big. With big success comes big problems and big everything. They might lose their feeling if they were to get really WORLD popular in America,it could spoil the spirit that exists in their world for so many years already.
I wish these fine musicians and artists and to have a happy and long career making their happy and rhythmic sound together.
I just wish it were possible to get to know them a little better as people in a great band and hear them play live!! Maybe one of the band will read this and answer me?

" For US "???..... Is a member of the band replying here??@@ecamhi2563 ??? it would be really cool if this is one of the band! But anyway, if it is or if you are like me, a fan, I came to Newen Afro from Ginger Baker and "Beware Mr. Baker" because I was a Cream fanatic in the time of their Goodbye album on. In particular Ginger Baker. Everyone may like who they like as a drummer, but NONE of the other drummers of the 60's era players was as deeply conscious of the entire world of "time" as Baker referred to rhythm as a concept. To more fully explore the fullness of what rhythm is and what it does for the human spirit, he had to go on a long journey into Africa and specifically to Nigeria, and learn yet another spectrum in the vast array of rhythms and how to gain a deeper understanding of his single minded pursuit. Spending years with Fela Kuti gave him yet another big lesson in what he did with his talent. It's just too bad he could not kick that habit with dope for good, that garbage ruined such a percentage of all the musicians of that time. But in speaking of Afrobeat, It may sound silly, but I have not even been able to find a listing in English ( what is "drums" in Spanish? ) of the names of all the performers!!
But to stay on topic, that drummer has either studied Baker specifically, or comes from a Jazz interest originally, because he without a doubt is doing with time what Baker had adopted as his credo from some earlier great drummer. This fellow makes everyone else sound better. So simply put, but really, only Mean Mr. Baker had the essence of what he did as a player thought out to it's simplest statement of purpose. I can hear in the way this fellow has chosen to make every beat as varied and meaningful and as complementary to his bandmates as he knows how, and it shows. Even the first few bars at the beginning of Opposite People are just full of small, subtle variations people may not fully hear consciously, but he knows what he is doing at every moment, and always making each measure just a bit different than the measure before if he's just providing the beat for the band at that moment. And because he does that so well, he makes every layer of sounds coming on top of his foundation sound so much better. And that sound becomes Newen Afrobeat. And that's pretty good.
It's amazing they have been around so long, and I have just heard their sound for maybe a year.

My favorite musical anti-depressant...I can't even imagine if this short-lived band had played a full concert!!?? 🤩🤩😍😍You can see the positive energy circulating, from glances to glances, from smiles to smiles exchanged...to finally reach us...The most beautiful video I've seen on TH-cam....

I can’t stop listening to this. Brass and drums are obviously brilliant, but the bass is hooked into some kind of earth rhythm that anchors the whole thing...absolutely awesome. I guess I’ll just have to watch it again! and again! 😎😎😎😎

Brilliant Kuti dance music in a makeshift studio with broken air-con - but they are having a party, and Seun is there with them - and for 14 minutes, so was I so. This is what my comfort zone feels like. More please 🙂

I love the music of Fela Kuti, kind of crazy that a band from Chile cover Nigerian music so so well, they are very talented. Seun Kuti does a great job as the lead singer. Respect, Fela was a tough act to follow!

The constat Funkish guitar, the crazy synth, the chicks on the vocals nailed everything, saxs and trumpets are all just insanely good, the percussions are awesome and daaamn those drum fills .. this all makes you wish this song never ends.....

Just look at that drummer! In classic Fela fashion he introduced the beat and maintained control throughout. See the organist weave in and out just like Fela. No need talking about the wind section: Fabulosa! The guitarists often get taken for granted since they hold the music together with ease. Great job guys. You guys are on top of Afrobeat. Believe it from a guy who has all Fela's CDs!!

This gets better every time I listen to it. The tightness of the rhythm ( the girl with the clave, this not so easy as it looks like) and the whole group, is incredible. All of the musicians are so on the spot. Brass section, can it get any better? Great soloing of bariton sax, trumpet, tenor sax and the keyboarders, especially of the elderly gentleman. Drums: Beyond words. Boy. Lots of respect to all of you.
