Building the model ship Danmark, from a Billings Boats kit

  • Shows the stages in Ross Callaghan's build of the model ship "Danmark" - from an old Billings Boats kit. The "Danmark" is the training ship for the nation of Denmark and has been used in this role since the 1930s when the ship was built.
    The model is 1.2 metres long, includes 20 sails, and is to a 1:75 scale. It took around 8 months to build. The video shows all stages of the build including laying down the hull, attaching the frames, planking, decking, making all the buildings and accessories on the decks. It shows how the masts, spars and sails were built and the fixed and running rigging. The end result is a really great model ship!

    My wife said I need a hobby and suggested model boat building.
    I'm having trouble soldering circuit boards now due to tremor in hand. So I can't see boat building happening.
    Great job.

    Of all the tall ships, which are many, the Danmark is my favorite. I served in the US Navy from '68-'72. I was stationed on the USS Independence CVA-62. While sailing off the Bahamas we came across the Danmark under full sail. Years later my Wife and I took a cruise and while visiting St. Thomas, the Danmark was docked right in front of our cruise ship. Although I would love to build this ship model, I do not have such patience nor being in my mid '70's my abilities for doing so is something I no longer have. I certainly enjoyed your video and hope you and your family members enjoy it for years to come!!! I will just have to enjoy my Royal Copenhagen Plate with the Danmark on it.

    A beautiful model . A couple of tricks are . one, if you have bits sticking up off the robe work . Is to run a block of beeswax along it . Two, make a neat job of cutting the ends off ropes , is to use a nail clippers .

    The time and patience it takes to complete a build like this is truly inspiring. I can relate to the part where you say "what level of perfection you're willing to accept." Spending countless hours on the smallest details. I applaud this effort. That's a masterpiece right there.

      Was going to say the very same thing. Ross has done a lovely job. When uncased models, especially ones as intricate as this start to collect dust it just ruins them. And with the best will in the world, if you try and clean the dust off, which you can never entirely do, you end up breaking things.

    Be proud, you’ve done a great job. I started building the Revell plastic version of US CONSTITUTION. I began the hull and cannon decks 1966. Married and moved 1973. Bekins movers built cardboard protective box to be able to move it 1250 miles to Texas. It made it unharmed. While unemployed I began the masts and rigging. I completed the majority of the rigging and mounted the sails. Kept it on the mantle our some time until a candle was place under its bow.......you can imagine. Damage was done to some spars and rigging. Now it sits in my office desk/hutch never to be finished as some few years ago I lost some of my vision.......so there it sits. Be proud. You’ve done well. My admiration goes to you. Regards

What a beautiful hierloom to hand down. If I was given that I would treasure it. I hope you have a display case to keep the dust off that amazing rigging. All the very best to you and your family. Kind regards. Pana Peters.

      João de Souza Ferreira, moro em Fortaleza e já construí vários barcos desse tipo em madeira a partir de kits comprados na Europa ou Estados Unidos quando viajo. No Brasil não existem para venda mesmo em São Paulo. Um empresa com bastante opções é a Artesania Latina espanhola, a Billing Boats dinamarquesa como desse modelo do vídeo. Tem também as italianas como a Amati e a Mamoli. A coisa exige paciência e afinco, mas para quem aprecia é um extraordinário passa tempo.

    “Danmark” is actually considered to be somewhat underrigged, meaning carrying a smaller area of sails than what could be expected for a ship of this size. This is due to the loss of her predecessor the barque “København” (Copenhagen), believed to be lost sometime in December 1928 in the southern Pacific. Nobody wanted a repeat of that so the sail area of the Danmark was reduced for safety’s sake.

    Wow...just...wow. I've been considering building an Eagle (Horst Wessel), but...jeez, compared to you, I've got the patience of a gnat and will probably have to buy one completed (and I know the ones for sale will never match the detail of one built out of passion) if I'm ever to have it to display. I went aboard the Danmark (moored) when she visited the Coast Guard Academy in the 1980s. Few people know of her history with the Academy during WWII. She was actually commissioned in the U.S. Coast Guard for a while. I did sail the Eagle from Australia back to New London in 1988 and then to Europe the next year. The barques were very similar and your model is amazingly detailed and accurate. Can you recommend a good kit to start with that's available today?

    • @calros3
      @calros3  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you do need patience to make model ships, and good problem solving skills. The Harvey would be a good starter to see if you enjoy the hobby. It has pretty straight forward planking and laser cut parts. Kits are widely available on sites like ebay. (But watch my video of the build first so you can access good instructions). After this I would suggest the simpler Billings or Artesania latina kits. But watch out - model ship building is addictive!

    • @calros3
      @calros3  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I checked my old plans, and yes you can make sails based on your plans. (Plan 2). I use the best quality cream muslin. I then cut out the sails based on the plan allowing 5mm for hems. My wife then sews the lines using cream cotton. I then sew all the hems or glue them. It's easier to glue them.
      I'm doing this at the moment for the Cutty Sark which is a similar size to the Danmark. Along slow laborious process, but satisfying as it all comes together. Enjoy your rigging!!

  • @paintbox48
    @paintbox48 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Ross...Fabulous build. I wonder if you could give me a bit of help on the model I'm making? I'm building a Constructo model of the Cutty Sark, and got as far as having fitted all the standing rigging for the masts. The instructions apart from the plans are really sparse and poor. I'm not sure what is the best order in which to fit the spars - I notice you do one mast complete at a time, rather than say do all the lower masts and move up all together. Have you any advice on this please. Cheers Terry

    • @calros3
      @calros3  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it is best to do a full set of sails on one mast at a time. Equivalent lines from each of the sails on a mast tend to come down so they are side by side on the pinrails. I always try to get these lines coming down tidily with no crossing over. If you pin one in the wrong place or the model doesn't provide enough places (it happens!) or you are not sure where the lines go (bad plans) and/or you need to re-arrange the lines, you wouldn't discover there was a problem till the last sail if you were doing spars from each mast, one at a time. I have also learnt not to tie up/glue the lines around the pins till all of the spars/sails are fitted. This allows you to adjust or tighten them so the final presentation of the sails is the best you can possibly get. Hope this helps. All the best for your build.
