    From Marin County California , Congratulations on a job well done. You sound like My Father in Law who is from New Zealand now living in Castle Rock Colorado. Also a sailing enthusiast. My Mother in law purchased some nice looking race boat models to decorate their Homes. Since Childhood I have always been fascinated with the warships especially Frigates of this era . I wish models of the various frigates of the same scale could be displayed together in order to show different hull configurations , armaments and relative sizes of 12, 18 and 24 pounder main battery classes as well as to scale models like HMS Cyane and Levant Ship Sloop’s. I grew up reading Horatio Hornblower books and about the Naval Heroes like Hull , Bainbridge , Decatur , Dacres , Lambert and many more. My nieces went to school with a friend who I met at Wells Fargo Bank who told Me that He was related to Captain Carden of the Macedonian.

    Excellent work and a very nice finished model. I really like the fact that it is all wood instead of plastic. I built a similar ship, the USS Constitution and added the extra sails on each side of the mains. So much detail and tedious work with the rigging. The further along I got, the harder it was to find a way to reach in to route and tie the working rigging off. Mine took me about 600 hours. It was plastic and turned out very nice but this wooden one looks so much more authentic, especially with the fabric sails. Again, awesome work.

    Wrong. The original Constellation was completely dismantled. The current Constellation may have used a few of the fittings and timbers, but she is a completely different ship. Different dimensions, different lines, different ship. That question has been settled years ago.

    • @calros3
      @calros3  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some kits use wood, others use plastic for the blocks and pulleys. This Artesania Latina kit uses wood. Plastic ones are much better as the tiny holes are more uniform.

  • @jeffreyrobinson3555
    @jeffreyrobinson3555 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is not met as a criticism, I’ve built a few wood ship models and my work is no where near as yours. But I’ve seen this on many model builders that do fine pieces and I have to ask why.
    Why do you set your sails square to the mast instead of on an angle as they would be in life.

    • @calros3
      @calros3  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the question. I suppose the answer is that model ships are static displays and can be viewed from left, right, front or back so displaying everything square means that they are easier to view.

  • @calros3
    @calros3  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes the Constellation is in Baltimore.

    You showed the constitution not the sloop constellation

  • @timrasinski3462
    @timrasinski3462 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sorry to say, the 1798 frigate Constellation and the ship currently in Baltimore harbor are not the same ship. Look it up on Wiki. The original Constellation was dismantled in Gosport in 1853 and the sloop of war Constellation was built in 1854, possibly as an accounting trick to build an unauthorized new ship. Rounded sterns on warships were not introduced until the 19th century, along with rounded bows. This model looks to be a mash up of the two ships. Rounded stern of the 1854 sloop but bow, upper deck and cannons of the 1798 frigate. Oh well, I know the kit was only built as designed, and it is a beautiful model. Just a heads up to anyone thinking about building this kit in the future.

    • @calros3
      @calros3  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for this. Yes I know the model is different from the current one in Baltimore. I tried to say that in the intro when I said the current one is a "new version". It was fun model to build though!

    I am looking for written instructions to build the U S S Constellation American Frigate 1798. Scale 1:85. Does anyone know where I can get them. My kit did not have any written instructions.

    • @calros3
      @calros3  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I still have the instructions and could photograph and email to you. Is your kit Artesania Latina, and do you have the plans?

    • @calros3
      @calros3  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The kit should have three documents. The first is the "instruction" booklet which has a line drawing of the Constellation on the front. Inside is an explanation of the way the "instructions" work, a parts list so you know the dimensions and materials for each part, and then a series of photographs of the model at each stage of construction. There are no other written instructions and I quickly adapted to this way of getting instructions. I rarely looked at the parts list and found the photographs adequate. If you don't have this document I can email photographs of it to you and you will be able to get the instructions that way.
      The other two documents are very large double sided plans of the hull and rigging. If you don't have these it would not be possible to make the model. They couldn't be photographed as they are so big and to scale.
      Even though it seemed that very little guidance was provided by the three documents I found that actually they did give all the instruction I needed to make a fantastic model - as long as I used lots of common sense. Every step there was a problem to be solved or a challenge to be overcome but I enjoyed that part of the build very much. (So much so that I then made another ship model from scratch - with no plans or instructions at all).
      The aol email address you gave me was rejected so I couldn't reply by email.
