I decided to do a less serious video this time in the hopes that it would be much faster to make. That sure didn't turn out like I expected. Nevertheless, I'm happy with the result. Moving forward, the majority of my videos will be regarding official lore, concepts lost in translation, and video essays that delve into the worldbuilding of Gensokyo- from internal and external perspectives. In any case, please enjoy.
I'm surprised to see such good quality and interesting videos being your first few, and can definitely say you've earned a new sub! Always be sure not to stress yourself too much in the making of these. Great video.
So, as someone who has been a Fumo Enjoyer since about 2010 and an owner of several dozen including half a dozen dekas, I recognize them as a seasoned, history-filled subsection of Touhou fan culture. That said, I would say there are: Touhou Fans that enjoy Fumos and then simply Fumo Fans. Both of which, being perfectly fine cases. Especially in the last few years, Fumos have certainly taken off in popularity. So much so that people have been making Fumos for other series. (I have a Bernkastel, Lambdadelta, and Ranni.) I would not have recognized them as their own subcategory in the past, but with the growing 'fanbase' I have to wonder... tl;dr: I'm honestly not sure whether to categorize them as their own type or not. But as you can see, I DEFINITELY thought about it when making the video. At the very least, I can say as someone who has witnessed the 'emergence and blossoming' of Fumo culture, you can certainly expect a quality video on the topic of those little fellers in the future!
@@GensouChronicle There is definitely intersection between Fumo fans and veterans/lore fans. I guess a section of the fandom don't take them as seriously when so many of them are very young compared to the other branches of the fandom.
@@gansmith I wouldn't say so much that there's an intersection, and more that 'fan types' don't exist as discrete existences contrary to what my video jokingly implies. In other words, I would say it's more a spectrum and everyone has varying levels in each of those categories. Some people might be super interested in the music and games, but not so much lore, etc. As for part of them not being 'taken seriously', I can't really say for sure. Despite me making this video(and by extension this channel), I don't actually have any friends/acquaintances who consider themselves apart of the 'Touhou community' nor do I involve myself in it. I simply observe the parts that interest me. And for that matter, I kind of just ignore people that try to create a 'hierarchy' of fans. Heck, that's really what this video was a jab at in the first place. lol But nah, fumos are cool. And if fumos are a gateway for some young folks to delve into more parts of the series, I say the more the merrier.
This is just something that comes to mind. To me there is no such thing as a hierarchy to this things nor does it have good or bad side no matter how fucked up it may be. This is a fandom built out of desire, may that be good or bad limiting it would just make the sense of creativity and fun to be gone. Because the good and the bad must coexist in order for it to reach perpetuality so it may live on. The video is merely satire as in it will generalize many people and what they like, there is no need to treat oneself as only one, just enjoy what ypu enjoy. Although some aspect may be annoying, cringe or traumatizing, some may actually find these things to be enjoyable and such there is a need to tolerate them. Not saying you should accept them but just let it exist. For I believe in the old saying "Gensokyo Accepts Everything"
Pardon me, my fellows, as a Fumo enthusiast myself, it fills me with joy how the answers to this comment made by Mr Gansmith are philosophical about the status of fumos in the fellowship of Touhou-enthusiasts we call Touhou fandom, the growth of fumo (l'é Foumeaux for those cultural enough to understand my terms) and its subculture in and outside of the Touhou community. Much philosophical thought and effort on analysing plushies
I feel like these types are all different levels you "evolve" to at some point over the time you dive down further into Touhou's iceberg; I can definitely see myself and most people having been most of these at some point.
I would say that's certainly the case for some people. I started off as a fan 16 years ago after stumbling upon piano arrangements of the official music and played the games shortly after. Maybe a year or two later, I started researching Eastern religions and so forth, and now here I am.
I've been a touhou fan for more than 10 years at this point and it has always been pretty difficult to find this kind of quality content. Your facts video had me interested in your channel but this one made me subscribe. You clearly know your stuff while being talented at editing, entertaining and landing your jokes. It's not that easy making fun and comedic content on this series without relying on stupidly funny formats (much like ytps or the old ciryes videos, even though they aged pretty badly) or completely falling into the cringe department (and there's a LOT of that), so I respect you and look forward to the future of this channel. Keep it going!
I appreciate it. I took a risk with this one, and I'm glad it paid off. The feedback I've been getting regarding the comedy definitely gives me enough validation to keep healthy dosages of it in the videos going forward. Thanks!
I got into Touhou because I heard a metal cover of Bad Apple by Richaadeb, went oh dang whats this, no idea what Touhou was, looked up original song, like many thought anime, and from there left it for a bit. Having clicked on bad apple was enough for youtube to recomend other touhou songs, I next ended up hearing a septette for the dead princess cover, un owen was her, and a few others and quickly fell in love with the music. For the longest time I was simply fan 3. Eventually I decided hey these come from a game I should try them and find out more about it, well played 6-like 13 and never beat a single one (I got up to Remilia in 6 on normal difficulty though) and watched the two fan anime, summer days dream and I cant remember the name but the popular one, and my sister and I both got into Lost Word. Granted, I don't play it much, but my sister who had nothing to do with Touhou before it got heavily into it, so now I hear story and lore from her and am to this day completly addicted to Touhou music, its just really good and the fans always give it there all in making amazing covers in all styles.
same, found bad apple years ago, thought its an anime and just left it in an anime playlist for a few years lmao. years later i somehow discover touhou PVs in a pretty weird way lol
My first exposure to Touhou was a port of Marisa from the fighting games into MUGEN, I saw the sprite and went "Man, what a cute and cool witch girl with a normal name. She throws explody potions and fires lasers, that's neat". I then went through most of these as phases. Playing the official games then giving up, playing the fan games and watching the videos. Holy crap there's a lot of fan games, you name the Genre, there's a 2hu for it. Picked some favorite 2hu's, enjoyed the cute art, enjoyed the *cute* art. Then I stopped but I still had a ton of the music on my iPod Shuffle. Now I just find videos like these on occasion floating around in my recommended and I watch them while calling everything 2hu's, the games, the characters, everything. It's extra weird/funny/neat when a 2hu slips into a random streamer's content that you watch too. It seems like if you spend any amount of time on the internet at all, you'll eventually run into one.
A new Touhou TH-camr! Can’t wait to see more videos from you As for me, I don’t really fit into any category, I like it for a little bit of everything. The music, characters, lore, and the games themselves.
Glad to hear you enjoy the entire spectrum of enjoyment the series has to offer as well. I wouldn't worry about 'fitting into' a category, as this video was just satire sprinkled with fan stereotypes all in good fun. Thanks for watching!
I have only been recently getting into touhou. I have several reasons why. 1. I heard there is actually pretty good stories in them with insanely powerful charcters 2. the music is great 3. I loved undertale's bullet hell style combat system and i found myself to be naturally pretty good at it. I heard that touhou is a harder bullet hell and I wanted a real challenge in bullet hells. So I started to try and play the games since they also look fun. I only started playing touhou 2 right now and I enjoy it. I am trying to do a 1cc on normal. yes, I started with the first touhou bullet hell, the one for the pc 98..
Ah, Story of Eastern Wonderland. The first one that is proper shooter, and it shows. It plays very much unlike later games; LLS is the first one that plays more like modern games. I have like eleven points on "why SoEW is so janky".
You don't have to feel bad, even though it is less serious and less lore related I still enjoyed it and I am sure others did aswell. Just make sure not to stress yourself too much in the making of your videos. I prefer slower videos over seeing a good youtuber quit
Thanks for watching my second video as well! I certainly don't plan to rush videos, at the very least. Especially when some of the ones I'm planning will start to require supplementary research on my end. I'd rather upload something I'm proud of than just uploading 'something' to meet an arbitrary, self-imposed time crunch. Thanks again for your continued viewing and feedback. I'm hoping to continue to improve with my next upload and onward.
Your writing, editing, humor, and sense of comedic timing are all excellent - this is a stand-out channel. Hope to see you with a 100k subs someday! Also, I read the Kojiki and Lafcadio Hearn's memoirs because of Touhou. Haven't been called out like this before, lol.
Oh? That's really cool. Translations of them or the original Japanese texts? I was planning to purchase my own copies of the Nihon Shoki and Kojiki but heard from people that the translations aren't up to par. And unfortunately, my Japanese isn't quite on a level to be able to tackle those yet. (And thanks, I think that's a far off day, but I think I'd like to hit 100k subs at some point.)
I'm a mixture of a lot of these. I started by listening to the music mainly listening to the house sets from different circles, then got into the relationship dynamics, then the lore, youkai, and Gensokyo as a whole, then read the fanwork doujins that have several different headcanons, and I finally played the game(not on lunatic bc I'm a casual), and managed to clear some too. All started when I watched a Bad Apple animation on Flipnote Hatena when I was 11 and it became a fandom that I've cherished since. I learned so much about Japanese mythos and culture from this bullet hell game, not to mention the creativity from the community. And the cute anime girls definitely are a plus.
I feel like I am one of those people who really enjoy the games, they’re just super fun and satisfying to play I won’t lie, I may have 1cced lunatic in like 5 games but that’s besides the point. I feel like how ZUN takes very good care of his games, characters, music and so on and it’s honestly super cool. I enjoyed the video! Keep it up.
I agree in that he takes special care of every aspect about the series. The fact that he even manages to go back and touch on characters we haven't seen in many years is great too.
@@GensouChronicle yeah that’s another aspect I really like about the games, the returning characters and that feeling of familiarity, it’s just like how we saw Flandre in Touhou 17.5 she hasn’t appeared in any game for like 20 years, which was honestly a huge surprise, or even like Murasa who was last seen as like a background character in one of the fighting games 10 years ago.
I was introduced to Touhou when i was playing a game, there was a reference and i was really interested what is this Touhou thing, so i did research and i found out it was a game so i decided to play it and i love the music and the game itself lol.
Think I first discovered Touhou via a Bad Apple! cover, searched up the original and saw it was a game (which weren't too accessible at the time), so from there started listening to the soundtracks and would often read up on the characters associated with the music. Crazy what one track can lead to.
Definitely the second type. When it comes to things that engage me it's rare that I can recall the exact circumstances behind how I got into something, most of my first playthroughs of video games are a total blur to me for example. Touhou however is a notable exception, I remember my path to Gensokyo in a fair amount of detail and that means it's story time. Hope you like reading, no TL;DR version for you. My absolute first exposure to Touhou was some time between 2010 and 2011, I'd have been nine or ten years old at the time. Back then I spent a lot of time playing a fangame called Super Mario Bros. X, created by Redigit before he founded Re-Logic and created the 13th best selling game of all time that is Terraria. My history with that game is a story in and of itself and one that's entirely besides the point. Anyway playing SMBX led me to a lot of custom levels for it including the Tower of Biased series, the compilations of the community contest submissions that were ran on the forums. The winner of one such contest was "This Level Contains Touhou Music". The song was "A Midnight Fairy Dance" from Great Fairy Wars. That was my first exposure to it but not the beginning of my interest, that would come some time after I began playing Team Fortress 2 in mid-2013. There's a lot of overlap between fans of TF2 and a lot of other things Touhou of course being one. Sure enough I eventually began seeing things like Bonkumiru and especially PhilipOnBread's MONTH FIRST series featuring the Medic singing over various popular Touhou songs. That got me listening to a small selection of the music and it'd stay that way for another five or six years. In 2019 I began my dive into mods for classic Doom. Somewhere along the way I found myself in a Zandronum game with a friend who decided to load a Touhou themed WAD. I remember an ungodly amount of deaths, multiplayer jank and general confusion. A year or two passed, we're now probably in early 2022. I got better at Doom and I one day remembered that WAD and decided I wanted to give it a real shot on my own and so I did. My memory of that playthrough is mostly gone, all I know for sure is I played it on the lowest difficulty and did the bare minimum to finish it. The Doom WAD I'm referring to is Touhou Doom ~ Unusual Invasion of Fire & Brimstone created by Untitled and six months ago after talking to the Zandronum friend I remembered it again. I remembered that I played it on Easy and that I didn't see everything it had to offer. So now better than ever at Doom I decided I was going to play Touhou Doom again and this time I was going to do it right. I was going to go for 100% and do it on Lunatic, mostly because it's the Ultra-Violence equivalent and I play almost everything Doom on UV now. As for Touhou Doom itself, it's a full 32-map Doom adventure through Gensokyo and beyond, the main draw being the boss fights which are as accurate to the games as Untitled could make them while still making use of the third dimension and finding room to do its own thing except of course you're fighting them in first person and can tank a lot of hits, most Touhou attacks only deal 5-10 points of damage to Doomguy. My Lunatic replay went very well, Touhou Doom wasn't something I just enjoyed I absolutely loved it warts and all. Absolutely one of my favourite Doom WADs and it's from there that I stopping lingering on the periphery and began learning more about Touhou. I've yet to try any of the games, much to the annoyance of Zandronum friend. It's a running gag between us that I'll do anything Touhou except play the games now. One of Touhou Doom's optional maps shifts the gameplay closer to real Touhou, playing a recreation of (part of?) Perfect Cherry Blossom's phantasm stage in top-down view complete with a fight against Ran. I streamed the WAD once to this friend and they were stunned because I was apparently dodging the patterns correctly as you would in the real thing. Cue them aggressively telling me to just play the damn games. I'm still on the fence about doing it, I have a small amount of I guess unconventional bullet hell experience but none at all with the shmup genre. So that's how I got into Touhou. The shortest review I can give of Touhou Doom is that I think the core gameplay is a lot fun and the WAD is a very enjoyable time if you can look past some primitive mapping. Untitled had never touched a Doom editor when they began making it which I think makes what they managed to accomplish all the more impressive.
after knowing some characters and music from touhou for like 6 years i finally decided to get deeper into it month or two ago, playing official and fan games, not planning to 1cc lunatic them, and now everywhere i go on the internet i see some touhou reference and am slowly going insane and need mental help, thanks internet, love you
You are a funny dude, hope you make more content, maybe not necessarily Touhou related I do have to say I relate to most of these types even as someone who's just recently got into touhou, love the games, love the music, love the lore, and I'm a sucker for ships lol
I appreciate that a lot! At the very least, I want to grow into my niche for the time being, but I'm not against expanding into Japanese Cultural Topics, a few VNs, and Video Essays on manga.
Beside being a new fan, as much as I've seen by falling into this rabbit hall of a fandom, this seems pretty realistic. I mean as realistic as an archetype can get but still this video gives really relatable informations, and even if every fans are actually a inequal mixture of this archetypes I think that most of us have one of them closer to the others to our relation with Touhou (expect for some real big subfandoms of the touhou fandom itself). As for myself I think I would be more close to the casual fan despite my introduction to the series being a bit chaotic. Anyway, thanks for the great work, keep it up and good luck to you for your videos but also in life in general I guess. And also thanks for actually putting everyone at the top, it is not something we see often on this fandom (mostly right now). You just get one more well deserved sub !
Thanks. I think you summed up my feelings nicely on how actual fans are mixtures of these 'archetypes'. This is just a fun little video, but I guess I put a fair amount of truth behind it. Thanks for watching!
@@GensouChronicle You're Welcome ! Happy to see that my little theory was able to get even just a bit of what you were telling. And for the truth part, I also wanted to say that it was cool because it wasn't falling into stereotypes or exageration like we can see most of the time. Anyway, I hope you have a great day. And as always, keep up the good work !
I have a friend who has a similar experience with the series. Except instead of simply listening to the music, they get to sit there listening to an arrangement of Junko's theme while I spend 30 minutes telling them about the genealogy of the Lunarians. Good times...
Which ones are the “basic ones”? Just Reimu and Marisa? The stage 5 cast? The EOSD cast? EOSD through IN? The characters who arent pc98? The characters who appear in any game? The characters who have their own pages on the wiki? The characters who have names at all? The characters that aren’t made up by the voices in my head? I no longer have the ability to tell. Help
This was sweet! Very fun, light video. I feel like I've just wandered all over this chart over the course of my 10 years of knowing about Touhou- I remember my first contact with the series was when a friend in my grade came up to me and was like "hey, you're going to that anime con, right? what if you dressed up as a character from this game for my group." And bam, just like that I was Pachouli with zero idea what was happening. I'm glad I was introduced to Touhou- just such a grand subculture with so much innovation both in the community and the series. I only recently moved beyond music and cute characters to actually knowing lore and reading manga and- believe it or not- playing games, and this series has just been rent free in my head for months because of that. Happy to be a fan in such a wide and varied community and I love this little tribute to all the ways people have fun with these games :)
Gotta love how "Cute Girl Enjoyer" is its own category. I do enjoy the music that the series and Doujin Circles brings, but at the end of the day, this series is about cute girls taking part in adorable antics for me. Nothing more than that. It's part of the reason I gravitated towards Koishi or Suwako as some of my favorites. They are just so silly and cute.
I myself am a "fan content" fan. I learned about Touhou from various fanmade content, ranging from songs like bad apple to animations or MMD dance videos with the characters. After a while I tried a bullethell game (granted it was fanmade) but didn't enjoy the game that much. But I do now play games from other genres and if you'd ask me my favourite Touhou game I'd answer one from a completely different genre (rogue like in my case), and do still like to watch fanmade art. Pretty much everything I know about the characters is because of fanmade work and although this may skew my perception it's still fun to learn.
I started off as one of the music fans, eventually became a hardcore fan (those were dark times), which then dropped off a bit later and now I'm a lot more of a casual fan, though I'll still keep up with the latest happenings inthe series.
I’m definitely a casual fan. Only got into it a few weeks ago. Played EoSD but gave up on beating it to completion cause I suck at bullet hells. Watched 2 of the fanime namely Memories of Phantasm and Summer Day’s Dream. Played Luna Nights fully. And ofc listened to the music. I felt a lil bad for calling myself a fan but barely interacting with official works but this video made me feel a bit better about myself 😅 Nice video btw!
Thanks. I wouldn't worry about 'fan credentials'. You sound like a great fan of the series! And who knows? Maybe one day you do check out some other official works later on.
Music fan turned casual fan that has never played the games here. This video is spot on. And quite funny. Also I might be a bit of that last type too 😉
tbh as a music fan i just came to make sure *some* form of my kind was on the list. though i at least know some of the very basics about the games even if ive never played any of them. you caught me in the middle of my latest touhou eurobeat binge.
I found touhou like 13-15 years ago through the music and that just sorta spiraled out of control from there. First the music, then memes, now I'm enjoying playing the games, although I had some trouble at first on how to do that. Touhou is such a large part of my life at this point and I'm just glad it exists.
Keep it up man im actually happy to find new and interesting Touhou channels like yours, i also want to point out that your editing style is awesome you do sure have potential. Best regards from 🇦🇷
Funnily enough, i am somewhere between music and "cryptid". First learned of touhou through music, became a fan from the games (because i like hard games.)
Congrats on your new video! I never made one myself, but I can imagine how much work you put in. I can't believe there's some people who actually played the game first, mad respect! Personally I am like no.1, just with more respect
It took somewhere in the realm of 20+ hours of editing alone, 3+ hours in recording, 6 hours in script writing. (I keep track of these for every video in hopes of graphing them out/comparing for hopefully streamlining the process a bit.) I'm hoping the next one won't take nearly as long. Thanks for watching!
Interesting! To be honest, I though this could take even more time. I think it's a good idea to keep track of it. I would like to hear your progress for your future videos
I think my first encounter with Touhou was the Bad Apple song, when using telegram I would save a lot of stickers without knowing they were from Touhou one day I found by mere chance the first song that you hear during the first mission of Touhou six, as of today I have played the 6-8 in the series
This was a great video! Touhou’s got a lot in variety in fans, and I really appreciate how you acknowledged the validity of them all! As the Touhou Project spans across media and form, so do the fans. Seems like this video’s popped off quite a bit, I wish you fair winds on the sea of the TH-cam algorithm.
Thanks. I've enjoyed some early success beyond what I could reasonably expect. I'm hoping to keep this momentum going while I can. As for my content, I want to always err on the side of positivity when it comes to the community since I think there's more than enough negativity everywhere else.
@@GensouChronicle I definitely agree - most of us Touhou TH-camrs had a lucky break one day and never looked back! Even if you can’t catch the same amount of algorithmic wind you’ll still have a well sized audience that’ll watch.
I watched Bad Apple many years ago. I had no idea what it was but when I saw that smile, I had to know. Im still a casual fan but im on a quest now to change that.
Honestly a really excellent video from such a small channel. Well edited and paced video with the appropriate visuals, surprisingly good audio that's mixed well, sounds clean and has you easily understood, a well rehearsed script and a clear understanding shown about the content being presented and so on. Genuinely don't normally go out of my way to say much like this, but it's well deserved here. +1 Sub for you. Looking forward to what more Touhou videos you may make in the future!
Thanks for all of that. This video ended up being A LOT of editing time compared to my other one which was slightly longer. Because it was a lot more gag-centric, I felt it needed a larger 'density' in visual transitions. And some of the transition I came up with were a bit time consuming. In either case, I was happy with how it turned out. Currently, I think where I need to improve, or in my case- start doing is adding 'audio transitions' as well to hold viewer captivation. Things that add, but don't detract or standout in comparison to the focus track. In any case, I hope to continue to improve and make lots more videos. Thanks again!
I absolutely was number 3. I got gapped into the touhou zone 3 times over lockdown. The first touhou song I came across was "Extended ash, Horai victim", Fujiwara no Mouko's theme, with her on the thumbnail of the video. This is probably why I like IN and the characters from it so much. At first I had no idea who this was, I thought Mouko was one of the main shrine maidens in the game, and thought Mouko/Reimu were the same people, and the game it was derived from was focussed on shrine maiden's fighting each other in some capacity. After an extensive youtube rabbit hole of theme songs and bad apples later, I came across a video about the world map of gensokyo and how it related to the characters and the games, which ended up familiarizing me with most of the cast up until roughly the 12th game, and the general formula of each game in the series. To this day, I haven't played any of the mainline games, and only know stuff from touhoutubers and YT series like Grotesque land story and KKHTA. The only thing touhou I've played was Lost word, which I played for about a month before putting it down, and tbh, its not really a touhou game, its a gatcha game. The only other touhou media I've interacted with, was making a couple short stories on google docs, that were complete slop and will never see the light of day, since I was quite a novice writer back then. They were inspired by a visual novel called "Gensokyo Visitor" I stumbled into when I was very new to the series, for the time I thought it was peak because I didn't know the personalities of any of the characters, but it is literally google translate tier slop writing, and I wouldn't advise anyone to go out of their way to read through it.
I'm new to Touhou due to a friend of mine dropping lore bits for reasons I forgot (other than Yukari being awesome and Ran being cute). I'd heard of Touhou before, of course. Mostly the music, but also the infamous "this is freakin' Touhou" when [insert MMORPG boss] decides that, if you can still see the floor in between AoEs, it's not sending enough. I like cool lore and cute (debatable) yokai so of course I was interested and started watching lore videos. So I'd be a mix of casual and lore, I suppose. Oh, and I'll get to listening to a cover playlist at some point, I'm sure.
Proud to be one of the three cryptids (+music enjoyer, which arguably has it's own sub group of people who are only into the stuff by ZUN and not very interested in anything else
I would say I'm a casual fan. I'd heard touhou music from ytpvms and remixes, even knew some of the more popular characters. What really started my recent spiral into touhou is when I found out about touhou lost word a few months ago. I'm hooked now :)
I started as a music fan that learned about touhou from some FGE songs on Osu! I always wondered who the girls in the background were...anyway I really like FGE's music so I found out they were a touhou metalcore doujin group (i like metalcore a lot) which lead me to find out their song's sources pulled from the touhou games. After listening to more doujin groups I finally made the leap of faith and tried the games out myself after watching a few videos about getting into the franchise. Now I have played Touhou 6-15 with no clears because I suck but they are really fun to play so I aim to get better. Also hearing the source to some of my fav FGE songs while playing is so cool like IN stage 2 song and "In A Night When Her Sorrow Resounds Around" by FGE. TL;DR started as a music fan, got pulled in and became a touhou gamer and stayed for the cute girls lmao.
I'm getting back into Touhou as of late, and I picked EoSD back up. I suck so much ass it's incredible, but I will continue to throw myself at that wall until I can clear it on Hard. I figure it's all over for me at that point. I know what I'm getting myself into. I'm too crazy to be afraid of the repercussions.
I honestly just like the games and the music. Most of the time I read comments arguing about how cool/cruel/powerful a character is and I have no clue what they're talking about
I just watched some animations and then started playing the games, i'm not even into anime looking stuff too much yet this franchise kinda trapped me into liking it specifically
I'll be honest, I don't consume any of the main stuff. I'm just hoping for Asatoshi to do more Burning Meiling. The Touhou Aesthetic and Martial Arts is just so damn cool.
I don't even know how to classify myself. Since 2016, I played and beaten every touhou game starting from easiest to hardest (according to Reddit), then started listening to OSTs, then started playing fan games. Now I want to experience the official games again) Addendum: This is good content and must've taken a lot of effort (script and editing). Have a good one)
I am not exactly one of those Fan#5, but I discovered Touhou because of Geometry Dash and tried to play some Touhou fan game named "Thousand Night Anamnesis". I eventually fall in love with the music and you can guess... got into the looks and the abilities of the characters as well. (And I am aware of the official games and how the characters actually look at them.)
i'm like a cryptid except i still have trouble with most games on normal and i do still somewhat interact with the fandom (i also recently started reading through the more lore-tied manga because i'm growing more interested in the lore)
I fall under the category of most of these, I read wikis on youkai and study the lore, I have absolute brainrot with all the ships I keep in my head, and I definitely enjoy the cute girls. Now if only I could beat the games. That'd be nice.
I started as a #3, then quickly shifted into a 2 (with shades of 8). I've played a couple of the official games because it felt like I should but never got far, but I mostly interact with the series through doujinshi and fanart, and the 2D platformer and RPG Maker fangames. I've played the unoffical TRPG a few times (but find the system a hard sell) and I draw Cirno for 9/9 every year my health allows.
I'm a mix of "Casual fan" and "Cute girl enjoyer". I came for the cute character designs, stayed for the worldbuilding. Also shipper since I made the mistake of writing fanfiction once and it quickly took over my whole life. Once you turn on the shipper brain you don't turn it off, ever. Seriously I can't consume any piece of media now without trying to pair off everyone oh god someone help me
I used to be #5 back in 2020, just played a few games, also listened to some music, and basically had no connection to the fandom. Now here I am, trapped in this hole lol. Good video, it was a pretty funny. Glad that the first video perfomed well.
Thanks for coming back to watch the second as well. Yeah, I started with Touhou 1 of all things back in like 2007 after seeing some of the music on TH-cam. It's kind of crazy how I can remember those experiences more vividly than anything else from childhood.
wow, another actually good touhou channel that's actually interesting? win. don't stop making videos unless you want to but I thouroughly enjoyed this video and your previous one.
I'm one of those people who like it because it's cute and I was introduced to it almost 20 years ago. To put it on record, I have played some of the games (both official and fan-made), and I know a few songs when I hear them.
Rewatching this vid right now, I am finding myself to be some weird mix of Casual and Cryptid. (Not expecting it to be long until I become a Hardcore fan tbh)
I've been into touhou since 2013 (also the same year I turned 14). I remember seeing the ronald mcdonald video and then I remember ash(?) and this other guy did an English cover of bad apple which I was also really hyped about (mainly because one of my friends used the word ash in her username on DA and Chicken Smoothie :D). However, despite how long I've been into the fandom, the lore, watching game plays and listening to every touhou remix I can get my hands on, I've actually only started playing the games this year! Unfortunatly I have bad-eye coordination, so I have so far only completed IN on easy mode lol
The first ever Touhou related thing I ever seen was Bonkumiru back in around Late 2014, I played A LOT of TF2, mostly Deathrun and sometimes Prison Break, I would often find Gmod animations that starred the 9 classes we all still know to this day, sometimes I'd even explore the music side of things and there it was, Bonkumiru, a TF2 version of Chirumiru, It was catchy and I enjoyed the animation, a couple days roll by and I go back to listening to it and look at the description to the original it was inspired by, I press the link and immediately my ears are surprised by the (unofficial) voice of (almost) everyone's favorite Icy Fairy, Cirno, I watch it once, think it's pretty neat and move on, however I stumble upon some videos or even rhythm games that include Touhou remixes. And with a spark of interest reignited, hit with nostalgia after rewatching both Bonkumiru AND Chirumiru awhile ago, Playing Lost Word, learning about the characters, PC-98 and old Windows games, and lore, was caught off guard after recently learning that Galaxy Collapse and Everything Will Freeze are Touhou Remixes after my younger brother played them numerous times on his rhythm games for YEARS, and even looked into maybe reading something like Forbidden Scrollery.
I've been side-eyeing this series for like a decade, never daring to actually touch it. Until a few months ago, that is, when I played Undertale II: Revenge of the Robots by Zizou. That was enough to finally make me check this damn thing out, and the whole time I've felt like a strange cross between the anthropologist from Stargate and that gif of Charlie Day with the conspiracy board. I live every day in fear
@@GensouChronicle You know, going into this I thought it wouldn't be _that_ crazy. I've seen a hell of a lot on this here internet! Surely the lore can't be worse than Kirby's or Homestuck's. Surely the games can't be much harder than Cuphead or some of UNDERTALE's heavy hitter bosses. Surely the fandom can't be more dedicated than Sonic's or MOTHER's, the latter of which localized the first and third games themselves and has managed to achieve self-sufficiency, and the former of which consistently puts out fangames that leave a depressing majority of the official games in the dust! Hell, the Sonic fans even managed to get a fangame officially licensed by SEGA! Surely the Touhou fandom has nothing _remotely_ close to being able to pay money for a fangame! *I know better now.* Kinda wonder what category I fall into. Probably the casuals but at the same time I actually intend to play the original games so who knows.
Well, all I can say is that I've still only brushed the surface. A lot of this stuff goes way deeper. I haven't had to start referencing the Kojiki or Nihon Shoki yet.
3:49 I can confirm there's at most a few hundred of us left in the whole world :P Also nice video, to me you always have such a fun way of showcasing stuff ^^
2, 3(kinda), 5, 7. yes, i did deadass start liking the series starting with the games. the original pc98 ones, in fact. however my enjoyment of the series almost entirely subsists off of the characters. music too but mostly the fact that it has okuu, reimu, and reisen in it. i love scringlies.
I came to touhou as a cryptid. I stayed in touhou as a lore fan. Now I’m just sort of awkwardly in between deciding wether to look up more information on the Kuni Yuzuri or beating all of scarlet weather rhapsody using only kicks.
I wish I worked on niche videos I actually was interested in when I tried too make a channel instead of trying letsplays in 2015(lol) I should have done socioeconomic analysis of Isekai Webnovels that did not have official translation, now that’s hot.
I lean more towards the Music Fan category. Sure, I had heard of the games before that, but I'm not one for playing video games anyway. I think the first video of "Bad Apple" I watched was a MMD with Vocaloids (so not even the classic shadow-art one). Then I started learning the immense lore behind it, and watched various fan animations (I noticed how much Marissa reminded me of Yang Xiao Ling from RWBY) But I *still* would never be able to play the games.
I am a pretty new Touhou fan, I got into it both because a certain ship caught my attention, and because my girlfriend is really into the series. So i'm self identifying with fan 2 and fan 6. I think my gf is somewhere between being fan 1 and fan 2, which sounds contradictory but it isn't, somehow. (edit, spelling errors. Smooth brain moment.)
well time to update your Cryptid count lol. I got into the series primarily because of the games, then the Fumos came along and well ,I will find and obtain all the Fumos, though my main priority is beating everything possible in all the mainline Touhou games. Also, if you walked into my den you'd probably be blinded by how bright it is. Side note: I know it was a joke just wanted to play along a bit. Your videos are great and I enjoy watching them so keep up the great work :D
Great video.
as a lore nut i like this
I really appreciate your videos very cool !!!!
You're very cool !!
Yeah, your only two videos till now got me really good, I really like it.
I dunno if you skipped the Fumo fans because your forgot or have left them on the seperate Koishi realm like many veterans and lore fans have done.
Heck, that's really what this video was a jab at in the first place. lol
But nah, fumos are cool.
For I believe in the old saying
"Gensokyo Accepts Everything"
Pardon me, my fellows, as a Fumo enthusiast myself, it fills me with joy how the answers to this comment made by Mr Gansmith are philosophical about the status of fumos in the fellowship of Touhou-enthusiasts we call Touhou fandom, the growth of fumo (l'é Foumeaux for those cultural enough to understand my terms) and its subculture in and outside of the Touhou community. Much philosophical thought and effort on analysing plushies
I don't know why you would describe me 8 times in a row.
LOL
I feel like these types are all different levels you "evolve" to at some point over the time you dive down further into Touhou's iceberg; I can definitely see myself and most people having been most of these at some point.
I would say that's certainly the case for some people. I started off as a fan 16 years ago after stumbling upon piano arrangements of the official music and played the games shortly after. Maybe a year or two later, I started researching Eastern religions and so forth, and now here I am.
Damn when did you reach level 8
relatable
Well, the shippers are a subspecies, once you evolve there, your only choice is to stay there, or go extinct.
It's one heck of a rabbit hole to fall down. Interesting to hear how you got into it. Thanks!
same, found bad apple years ago, thought its an anime and just left it in an anime playlist for a few years lmao. years later i somehow discover touhou PVs in a pretty weird way lol
It seems like if you spend any amount of time on the internet at all, you'll eventually run into one.

everywhere I go I see his face...
A new Touhou TH-camr! Can’t wait to see more videos from you
As for me, I don’t really fit into any category, I like it for a little bit of everything.
@@GensouChronicle I know, I wasn't worrying. Just keep up the good work, I personally can't get enough of English Touhou YT
"a little bit of everything"
ah yes, the punchline is por-
I have only been recently getting into touhou. I have several reasons why.
1. I heard there is actually pretty good stories in them with insanely powerful charcters
2. the music is great
@@Dukstless eh, for what it is, it's not bad control wise
Honestly? Not a bad place to start.
@@0ctopusComp1etely I am on touhou 3 now. I cc tuhou 2 on normal using all three combat styles already. I have no hope of completing the special stage
Ironic they're called "anime" girls though stereotypical touhou fans HATE it when you say "anime"!
Indeed.
Untitled had never touched a Doom editor when they began making it which I think makes what they managed to accomplish all the more impressive.
after knowing some characters and music from touhou for like 6 years i finally decided to get deeper into it month or two ago, playing official and fan games, not planning to 1cc lunatic them, and now everywhere i go on the internet i see some touhou reference and am slowly going insane and need mental help, thanks internet, love you
You are a funny dude, hope you make more content, maybe not necessarily Touhou related
I do have to say I relate to most of these types even as someone who's just recently got into touhou, love the games, love the music, love the lore, and I'm a sucker for ships lol
We shall watch your career with great interest, keep it up good sir
Much appreciated.
I have one friend who knows Touhou bc of Osu, don't know any of the characters aside of the Basic ones, and has an Playlist full of Touhou arranges.
Help
@@magicyber909 Reimu Marisa and cirno.
This video is definitely the culmination of many years observing the fanbase. Glad you enjoyed it.
>Crackships that get content once in a blue moon
>Wriggle and Yuuka
If only that were true. If only that were true.
So what is your favorite Touhou fangame? I think mine is either Luna Nights or Koumajou Densetsu 2.
Touhou Genso Wanderer
I started off as one of the music fans, eventually became a hardcore fan (those were dark times), which then dropped off a bit later and now I'm a lot more of a casual fan, though I'll still keep up with the latest happenings inthe series.
I’m definitely a casual fan. Only got into it a few weeks ago. Played EoSD but gave up on beating it to completion cause I suck at bullet hells. Watched 2 of the fanime namely Memories of Phantasm and Summer Day’s Dream. Played Luna Nights fully. And ofc listened to the music. I felt a lil bad for calling myself a fan but barely interacting with official works but this video made me feel a bit better about myself 😅
Nice video btw!
Thanks. I wouldn't worry about 'fan credentials'. You sound like a great fan of the series! And who knows? Maybe one day you do check out some other official works later on.
Music fan turned casual fan that has never played the games here. This video is spot on. And quite funny. Also I might be a bit of that last type too 😉
Same here, although I don't admit to the last type... nope, not admitting it...
tbh as a music fan i just came to make sure *some* form of my kind was on the list. though i at least know some of the very basics about the games even if ive never played any of them. you caught me in the middle of my latest touhou eurobeat binge.
I used to listen to Touhou Eurobeat religiously. I'd blast T.Stebbins in the car to and from work all the time. Several traffic tickets were accrued.
Legends speak of *that one guy* who has completed all 2hu games with a pacifist run. 💀
Banging video again btw
Haha. Thanks again!
As the legend goes he sought out one of equal skill and challenged him to a game of phantasmagoria. To this day their match continues.
Pacifist?
They are the Undertale
I found touhou like 13-15 years ago through the music and that just sorta spiraled out of control from there. First the music, then memes, now I'm enjoying playing the games, although I had some trouble at first on how to do that. Touhou is such a large part of my life at this point and I'm just glad it exists.
I'm a mix of Fan #1 and #7
Keep it up man im actually happy to find new and interesting Touhou channels like yours, i also want to point out that your editing style is awesome you do sure have potential.

Thanks so much! I'm hoping to improve my editing as I go.
The 3:32 lore Chad is speaking nothing but facts.
They hated him because he spoke the truth.
Ok but and hear me out instead of that, just bare period.
Me at the grocery store: Mom, I want Suika.
Mom: We have Suika at home.
Suika at home: 0:27
I love the silly fruit character.
Suika in the 4kids localization: 0:27
i’m a blend of music/casual, i have a favorite character, dabbled in playing fanworks, and listen to the music religiously(i love touhou‼️)
I honestly just play the touhou games. I don't know the lore, the characters, the memes, anything. I just like when i shoot and dodge stuff
I appreciate that. Thanks so much.
Another cryptid here. Nice videos
I would say I'm a casual fan. I'd heard touhou music from ytpvms and remixes, even knew some of the more popular characters. What really started my recent spiral into touhou is when I found out about touhou lost word a few months ago. I'm hooked now :)
Okay, this was way funnier than I expected. Holy moly...
Thanks!
3:40 i actually discovered touhou after stumbling on one of the PC-98 games on an archive website (lotus land story) this just got me 💀ing
lol good.
It's great!
f***, I seariously thought we end this video on a wholesome note.
you got me good there.
Now I want to experience the official games again)
Addendum: This is good content and must've taken a lot of effort (script and editing). Have a good one)
Thanks. This video was a lot more time-consuming than initially planned when I started working on it. Glad it turned out well!
I'm the hardcore fan. I bought Touhou 10, and it's really fun. I'm very hardcore into it.
I hear ShibayanRecords in the background, I already respect the content.
i'm like a cryptid except i still have trouble with most games on normal and i do still somewhat interact with the fandom (i also recently started reading through the more lore-tied manga because i'm growing more interested in the lore)
5:32 WHAT IS ASRIEL DOING HERE?!
Im somewhere between casual and hardcore lore enjoyer, though i do pick up some exquisite art when my inner #8 comes out.
Lmao the end. Btw dude, nice Job, hope to see more of your content
Thanks!
Seriously I can't consume any piece of media now without trying to pair off everyone oh god someone help me
I absolutely fucking loved this video. Seriously, great work man!
"Trapped in this hole" I find that description awfully relatable
_awfully relatable_
wow, another actually good touhou channel that's actually interesting? win. don't stop making videos unless you want to but I thouroughly enjoyed this video and your previous one.
Thanks!
I think everyone is a fan if they like Touhou.東方は最高だ!
Very true.
"look at this art? does it not spark joy?"
no, it sparks my PTSD from every Joyful work that wasn't actually joyful
This strange channel almost unknown is just super freaking cool, I am sub and I think you will grow fast, keep it up
Thanks. Stay tuned for more.
I'm one of those people who like it because it's cute and I was introduced to it almost 20 years ago.
To put it on record, I have played some of the games (both official and fan-made), and I know a few songs when I hear them.
I was introduced to it back in about 2007 myself.
5:55 cute more like endless trauma from the little reimu doujin
Rewatching this vid right now, I am finding myself to be some weird mix of Casual and Cryptid.
(Not expecting it to be long until I become a Hardcore fan tbh)
It took me about 6 months when I started. But there was a LOT less stuff to go through.
I believe I'm a casual fan mixed with a fan of touhou music.
This is the most comment ever. Thanks.
*I know better now.*
Kinda wonder what category I fall into. Probably the casuals but at the same time I actually intend to play the original games so who knows.
Well, all I can say is that I've still only brushed the surface. A lot of this stuff goes way deeper. I haven't had to start referencing the Kojiki or Nihon Shoki yet.
Started off as the music fan ended up as multiple of these, I have fallen down the touhou rabbit hole I burrowed a home and i'm staying here
3:49 I can confirm there's at most a few hundred of us left in the whole world :P
Also nice video, to me you always have such a fun way of showcasing stuff ^^
Haha, thanks.
6:56 *insert troll face smiling with among us role reveal bass boosted mp3 here*
Yeah, I'm the fan #8 for sure but it also made me touch the games besides myself.
3:08 lmao thats crazy because thats exactly what im doing as i listen to the video
Edit: I'm definitely a mix of the Lore fan and cute girl enjoyer
I came to touhou as a cryptid. I stayed in touhou as a lore fan. Now I’m just sort of awkwardly in between deciding wether to look up more information on the Kuni Yuzuri or beating all of scarlet weather rhapsody using only kicks.
And yes I do scour the bible for tiny details regarding angels, demons, and anything else. The juicy stuff is in the apocrypha books.
@@magicyber909 These days I just browse religious texts for ideas to inject into my tabletop campaigns. Lots of neat stuff.
I’m new to Touhou and I am a casual fan, I genuinely do enjoy Touhou
I wish I worked on niche videos I actually was interested in when I tried too make a channel instead of trying letsplays in 2015(lol) I should have done socioeconomic analysis of Isekai Webnovels that did not have official translation, now that’s hot.
I'm feel pretty casual now... but what I did in past and what I have, I might be some kind of UHC fan.
I lean more towards the Music Fan category. Sure, I had heard of the games before that, but I'm not one for playing video games anyway. I think the first video of "Bad Apple" I watched was a MMD with Vocaloids (so not even the classic shadow-art one). Then I started learning the immense lore behind it, and watched various fan animations (I noticed how much Marissa reminded me of Yang Xiao Ling from RWBY)
But I *still* would never be able to play the games.
Really nice video, enjoyed every segment
Glad you enjoyed it!
The Cryptids stuff feels too real personally, lmao
Good vid
Glad you enjoyed it!
5:31 hehehehe my old art jumpscare xddddd
As a Touhou video game enjoyer I confirm we actually exist
Woah.
1:37 Sound like me when every fandom
But I interactive in existence account as TH-cam
I'm a mix of 3 and 7. I like the series because good music and cute art. Simple as.
5:31 I KNEW HIMUGATOKI WOULD BE THERE WITH THE FUCKING FLANTRAP ART
well time to update your Cryptid count lol.
Thanks for watching.
The Cirno and Aya picture was my wallpaper at one point lmao
