I was never able to fully comprehend the phenomenon of touhou. It feels like something that had such a low chance of happening, that it could be compared to the big bang, an unlikely event that had unimaginable consequences. Because a simple bullet hell game turning into, without exaggeration, an internet empire sounds like a silly joke rather than something that actually happened. If people usually say "catching lightning in a bottle", then zun caught the god particle in a bottle.
Clicked on this expecting a video with at least 100k views. I actually coughed when I saw that it only had 13, really cool video, made my school lunch break actually enjoyable
I remember when I was around maybe 7 years old? I came across parodies of Touhou songs simply being played with windows XP or Vista error sounds, specifically the song Marisa stole the precious thing. I think its funny how at the time, I just knew them as just the 'windows error' song, and this was like in 2009 - 10 when TH-cam Poops were pretty much the only thing I watched lol
Oh no definitely, the hidden pipeline of being a late 2000's early 2010's kid simply enjoying youtube videos that you found fun or cool then suddenly being indoctrinated into touhou a few years later is crazy, because you realize it was always there, it just needed you to find it again

I stumbled upon Touhou in 2006 and since then it literally changed my life. Met a girl on an anime convention who was also into Touhou a few years later. We eventually ended up dating and now we've been married for a good couple of years. She's had the privilege to study in Japan for more than a year. She managed to get a physical copy of EOSD and gotten it signed by ZUN at a meet and greet. It is on display in our living room.
Other notable things I think are worth mentioning that could color the series more: 1) Touhou was once a titan of doujinshi works. Being one of the most represented series in Comiket and even led to the creation of their own con, Reitaisai. 2) In EoSD, one of Cirno's attack patterns on Easy mode actually do not hit in front of her meaning you could stand right in her face and not die. This is showcased in the Cirno's Perfect Marh Class MV further showing her as dumb. 3) Touhou has been cited as one of Toby Fox's biggest inspirations when making Undertale. It's gotten to the point where both he and ZUN have collabed for a song in a Touhou rhythm game, remixing one song from each game together. There's a second one on the way as well.

I want to clarify that the information I share is not found on any wiki and is the result of my own investigation. Although the Inu Sakuya figure was manufactured by Gift in 2009, surprisingly, the company did not sell it in any of its stores. This figure was available on three occasions during that same year: at White Canvas (online), Akatsuki no Banket (presential), and Comic x Comic (presential). Inu Sakuya first appeared in 2005, not 2007. Many believe that the comic "Together with Inu Sakuya" is her first appearance, but this is a rumor originating from Danbooru. While I had seen a number of iterations of Bad Apple over the years, it completely went over my head, and I had no real idea of what Touhou was until July 2023, when I discovered Cirno's Perfect Math Class on Spotify, then later found out it was about Touhou and watched its music video, then found Japanese Goblin on TH-cam, and things just grew from there. Now, I've listened to hundreds of different Touhou fan songs, have played Touhou 6, and own a bootleg fumo (Cirno). It's insane how deep the rabbit hole goes.
One big aspect you didn't talk about much and the way I got into Touhou is rhythm games and the sheer amount of touhou songs in all of them. When I first found out about Touhou it was mind blowing realising hundreds of charts and songs i had all came from the same place.
3:28 Funny thing is I get introduced to Touhou because of my ego I was in Middle school when I discovered it, it all started when I want to play a hard game on my potato PC (So potato it can't even run Dark Souls 1) So, I searched for lists of "Hardest Game" according to internet and Touhou often got into many of the list I was so broke at the time, I downloaded all Touhou games from Touhou 1 to Touhou 17 on Kanako's Shrine website I picked up Touhou Project because at that point I've been playing bullet hell games since I was a kid but never got to be an expert into it. So I thought to myself bullet hell isn't hard, but it just requires time to master And boy, Touhou was surely easy compared to the bullet hells I've played during my childhood year. On my first hard run on Touhou 6, I managed to beat Meiling without using bomb nor losing a life. Since then, I've become an avid but casual Touhou player Little did I know, it was the first time a game really dragged me into a fandom seriously
A single video on Instagram about U.N. Owen Was Her played on a block music thing sparked my spiraling down the Touhou rabbit hole. I recognized the song from *somewhere,* but I had no idea where. As I went on I found out that some of the eurobeat songs I listen to (Odyssey Eurobeat songs namely), were actually inspired by Touhou songs. And then later, I even found out that my interest in vocaloids has some Touhou roots too. Teto Territory has leitmotifs from a few Touhou songs, namely Beloved Tomboyish Girl. Touhou has been ingrained in my life for longer than I even realized. I never did find out where I recognized U.N. Owen Was Her, though. But all it took was a single random Instagram video
For me, introducting for Touhou, expect some obscure old media I saw as a kid was Soga No Tojiko's 'Caipirihna Dance" Because of this meme, I start exploring one of the deepest internet rabbit holes and saw so many Japanese YMTP and Songs, which included Lucky star, Haruhi, some popular and obscure fighting games, gachimuchi, and of course, Touhou. I cant even tell how I feel about Touhou right now, it's just too iconic yet underground thing nowadays, especially in my country, I even made some clay figures and furst russian Tinkoff meme, damn, maybe I'm not a hardcore fan of Touhou, but I actually love this franchise, it's like a little, likely microscopic piece of me.
yea I mean I like all forms of media mostly cartoons anime and anything to do with puppetry and I don’t have a waifu personally lol but I mean if people do have one I don’t judge but I don’t personally…
The very same day I published my own take on Touhou being everywhere this popped up on my recommendations feed 😂 Your video is much more in depth, and most importantly contains much more Cirno in it. 10/10 Great vid, keep it up.
Amazing job 🔥🔥🔥 I always have such a hard time trying to explain to friends wtf touhou even is. Also I had no idea about that bad apple extended version, fascinating stuff 👀
bad apple, u.n.owen was her, Flandre scarlet, and Koishi Koemiji's heart throbbing adventure those are the things that got me into Touhou and now I'm a fan who has played many of the games and fan games owns a Koishi fumo and am making my own fan work
I honestly probably consumed incomprehensible amount of Touhou media over the years(mostly touhou circles music, i still listen to some of that stuff to this day and will likely continue to do so until the end of my days), yet the only actual official game i played is EOSD(Cleared the Flandre stage, too, after ramming my head into a wall repeatedly by trying again and again because my dumb ass couldn't remember patterns in danmaku games back then). Zun is honestly a legend for starting all of this just because he wanted to write music for games. Fumos were a mistake though. ...why is Sakuya a furry?
As far as i rember, she ever got called as dogs of devil since she is obedient to the SD combo ( flan and remilia )... She is probably a vampire hunter by looking at her dagger but that's just theory and the rest are history..m
I remember back in 2008 when my older brother had EoSD, MoF & Imperishable Night on CD disk. He allowed me to play them on his laptop and ever since I've always loved Touhou. I am really impressed and grateful that the community and the games are still going strong even many years later and I hope it continues to live on for a long time. This is the type of series I cannot turn my back to.
Oh, that Bad Apple extension is lost media. I remember there being clips of it but it must of been removed. I remember Satori, Orinrin, and Utsuho being added too as cameos.

Imma just mention that yall probably listened to tiny little adiantum, probably in the one where the dude copied it(basically the crappy remix, he didn't credit the original and monetized on it) and I refuse to mention its name, im bitter about it. Also in 3:30 by most likely you might mean the majority but I'd bet that most of em are probably well acquainted with it... Or at least as of yet
I got into touhou because of the musik. Its so dam mixable that its unbelievable. I kid you not, out of my 700 songs bookmarked, 400 are touhou related.
Having been on the internet for a long time and having played osu for nearly a decade, I've been exposed to a lot of touhou music. And even before then, I would see touhou memes on youtube and such. It's like this cultural elephant in the room that eluded me for years. I don't think I could call myself a touhou fan just yet but somehow I have a deep-seeded fondness for cirno's perfect math class, bad apple, and fumos as if I were a touhou fan in a previous life or something...
Zun is probably the best music composer currently alive. If not the best, at least the most well known top tier composer. The fact that he allowed his franchise and music to be built upon by hordes of talented fans has cemented him as an immortal gigachad. Mad respect.
Touhou is one of the very goated indie series I've ever seen... I like how Zun makes eastern culture and folklore myths in his series which is very interesting.
Honestly the impact of not only touhou memes but Japanese influence on internet culture is stratospherically high, not by having one ultra-popular meme but by having many different memes here and there that made their way into the West. But you could argue that either Germany or Finland are more influential because wojak and apu apustaja came from each respectively but apart from these they are fairly scuffed. Edit: do not get mad that I called wojack a German meme when it was originally drawn by a Polish person, doesn't matter because it got popular first on krautchan, a German site.
ZUN made Touhou when he was only -1 years old, respect
What really got me into Touhou was me realising Ronald McDonald insanity was a touhou meme

I'm a simple person, i see Touhou i watch, like and subscribe.
Really good video for a touhou introduction shows just how big the series is
3:28
Funny thing is I get introduced to Touhou because of my ego
I was in Middle school when I discovered it, it all started when I want to play a hard game on my potato PC (So potato it can't even run Dark Souls 1)
So, I searched for lists of "Hardest Game" according to internet and Touhou often got into many of the list
I was so broke at the time, I downloaded all Touhou games from Touhou 1 to Touhou 17 on Kanako's Shrine website
I picked up Touhou Project because at that point I've been playing bullet hell games since I was a kid but never got to be an expert into it. So I thought to myself bullet hell isn't hard, but it just requires time to master
And boy, Touhou was surely easy compared to the bullet hells I've played during my childhood year. On my first hard run on Touhou 6, I managed to beat Meiling without using bomb nor losing a life. Since then, I've become an avid but casual Touhou player
Little did I know, it was the first time a game really dragged me into a fandom seriously
i love this video so much, i hope this can bring even more people into the fandom and give moar knowledge to those who don't know anything touhou!!!
leaving a comment to boost engagement, amazing video
To quote a legend comment in the original Bad Apple AMV: “It’s actually scary how I know 80% of these characters despite never played a Touhou game”
EVERY-FUCKING-THING ON THE INTERNET. LITERALLY. TOUHOU EVERYWHERE.
It's one of those deep rabbits holes that you can't escape
I got in because of the hentai, stayed because I like the lore.
Fan base is a mixed bag...
Nicktoons/nickelodeon, the muppets and touhou is a staple of my accounts
Are you a weeb or no, also, opinions on the waifu stuff? I hate the waifu stuff 🤮
yea I mean I like all forms of media mostly cartoons anime and anything to do with puppetry and I don’t have a waifu personally lol but I mean if people do have one I don’t judge but I don’t personally…
@Its_hoekin_time Good. Whenever I see the word waifu, it's posted on MAD INNAPROPIATE garbage 🤮
The very same day I published my own take on Touhou being everywhere this popped up on my recommendations feed 😂
Your video is much more in depth, and most importantly contains much more Cirno in it. 10/10 Great vid, keep it up.
Amazing job 🔥🔥🔥 I always have such a hard time trying to explain to friends wtf touhou even is. Also I had no idea about that bad apple extended version, fascinating stuff 👀
i've been a long time fan of this series and still loving it
PART 2 🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣
Cirno is named after Cirno from "Sarai" manga, ZUN got his inspiration from that manga on Touhou 6, Sakuya included
I dont even know anything about touhou
Somehow i know LOTS of meme from this thing
This video only scratched the surface of the meme influence too.
bad apple, u.n.owen was her, Flandre scarlet, and Koishi Koemiji's heart throbbing adventure those are the things that got me into Touhou and now I'm a fan who has played many of the games and fan games owns a Koishi fumo and am making my own fan work
it’s a great game but i hate its 40 yo manchild fandom
There's a lot of younger fans now too, I think Bad Apple keeps pulling them in.
PCB scenario, she is called "dog of the devil" by Yuyuko
As far as i rember, she ever got called as dogs of devil since she is obedient to the SD combo ( flan and remilia )...
She is probably a vampire hunter by looking at her dagger but that's just theory and the rest are history..m
Great documentary, thank you.
God I miss the old internet :( espeically youtube 2006-2012
2005-2018 best era fr
I remember back in 2008 when my older brother had EoSD, MoF & Imperishable Night on CD disk. He allowed me to play them on his laptop and ever since I've always loved Touhou. I am really impressed and grateful that the community and the games are still going strong even many years later and I hope it continues to live on for a long time. This is the type of series I cannot turn my back to.
Can you maybe make TF2's Impact on internet culture video or Maybe a Evagelion video.
everything you see on the internet,is somehow a tf2 referance
The Best Years Of Touhou never ends
Very well researched.
Good job!
Oh, that Bad Apple extension is lost media. I remember there being clips of it but it must of been removed. I remember Satori, Orinrin, and Utsuho being added too as cameos.
Nice video dude! I've watched till the end and left a like and a comment!🎉
I‘ve known about Touhou‘s existence for quite a few years and just associated it to many many songs but back then I felt like it was too huge of a fandom to get into. A few days ago I actually started getting into Touhou and realized that literally everything is Touhou it‘s crazy
i got into touhou and it helped me dodge all the bullets my parents shoot at me every day!!
75% of music artists I follow at least had something touhou related to their name.
If we're not going to include the music artists that I followed post 2020.
I'd say 90% did something related to touhou.
Let's not forget our amazing Touhou metal pioneers as well;
Foreground Eclipse!
(Disbanded in 2013, sadly)
Not many people know that one of the first iterations of the Ricardo Milos meme came from a Touhou fan in 2011, Touhou is literally everywhere.
I've never actually gotten into touhou but hearing that the ronald mcdonald video used touhou music was one of those "ooooh that makes perfect sense" moments lol
Non-stock image plus user name and badge equal legit fumo usually, check version type and look for defects like cirnos middle hair piece from 1 to 2.0
as a vocaloid / utau fan of course some things overlap like how teto territory one of tetos most popular songs was basically a parody of cirnos math class, not to mention a cover of a version with miku that forgot the name of
touhou is a part of that doujin era when we had CLAMP media and other stuff and its awesome...
ZUN not only made an amazing series, but changed the internet forever
I got into touhou because of the musik. Its so dam mixable that its unbelievable.
I kid you not, out of my 700 songs bookmarked, 400 are touhou related.
Have i seen this video before? I'm getting deja vu....
I remember started being one in early 2023, because of IOSYS, I loved their videos, still now!
The internet wouldn't be what it is today without Touhou.
You should also mention how big touhou is in rhythm game scene. It's actually been a staple for every rhythm game to have a touhou category for music.
Zun is probably the best music composer currently alive. If not the best, at least the most well known top tier composer. The fact that he allowed his franchise and music to be built upon by hordes of talented fans has cemented him as an immortal gigachad. Mad respect.
15:36 project sekai mention 💖
actually so happy that it got a touhou collab because now i can force my friends to learn about touhou
If it wasn’t for bad apple then i wouldn’t been opened to the world of touhou project and glad im a huge fan of it now
Touhou is one of the very goated indie series I've ever seen... I like how Zun makes eastern culture and folklore myths in his series which is very interesting.
i don't even like bullet hells, but the fan music is so good bro.
i am so proud to be a touhou fan
Honestly the impact of not only touhou memes but Japanese influence on internet culture is stratospherically high, not by having one ultra-popular meme but by having many different memes here and there that made their way into the West. But you could argue that either Germany or Finland are more influential because wojak and apu apustaja came from each respectively but apart from these they are fairly scuffed.
Edit: do not get mad that I called wojack a German meme when it was originally drawn by a Polish person, doesn't matter because it got popular first on krautchan, a German site.
As someone who owns 6 fumos I LOVE THIS FRANCHISE
Do you all remember the internet from 2007 to 2014? Numerous memes from Donald McDonald's Touhou Mad and NicoNico I really enjoyed every day
Touhou really shaped the 2000s Internet, but that time, im still inside a cave
