    I have been hunting in Michigan my whole life, only recently have I tried bow hunting and I have realized it is FAR different from rifle hunting. No kill yet, and I stress yet, but I have had a few close calls, one where some doe had snuck up on me and caught me out and it was heart pounding being on the ground with what I can only guess were about 5 doe less than 10 feet away opening day at dawn. They couldn’t see me as I was ghillied, but they caught my scent and they tried spooking me out with some snorts and ground stomps. They gave up and walked away as they were certain I was there. Far more excitement I have ever had rifle hunting.
    I’m glad I found your channel as your words are very wise and God willing I can learn something from you. Thank you for your wisdom.

    I believe there’s a lot of wisdom in your words. I personally experienced what you’re talking about 7 years ago. I realized I had gotten too far off track with the technology and antler chasing. I put down the compound and switched to traditional. I felt alive and the hunt was “fun” again. I’ve since evolved to primitive and absolutely love the challenge. A lot of people don’t understand this mindset and continue to chase inches. To each his own, right? Anyway thanks for the video and unique point of view.

    Learning to appreciate , alot of wisdom for such a young man . The longer I watched the more I enjoyed your take on the real meaning of hunting . I started at 7 and self taught , now at 56 still enjoy purity of time outside . Thank you for such a great look .

    I grew up hunting back east. I've lived out west for 10 years now and the country has been amazing. I will say tho there is something magical I miss about sitting in a tree in the eastern woodlands with a stickbow and watching the woods come alive in the morning

    You really struck a nerve with me. I was wanting a new compound with laser whiz bangs heat seeking mechanical heads and every gadget I could think of. After listening to you I pullled my neglected Howard hill longbow and arrows out. And the feel of the wood and smell of the cedar and leather took me back to a happy and simple time. You are right we need to get back to hunting and be thankful for the game whatever the size.

      Nice those old Hill bows are great! Nothing wrong with compounds either, I just think everyone would be more grateful if they spent a hunting season only hunting traditional or primitive. Thanks for watching and keep me posted next season hunting with that Howard Hill bow. Happy hunting.

    Great video , that is real hunting getting it done with a traditional bow is awesome ! I'm still looking to get my first trad deer with my Montana longbow no luck this past season , but had a great time getting out there and hunting with a stick and string , also you definitely are a seasoned traditional archer , 65#'s is a lot of bow , I shoot a 40# @ 28 but with my 31" draw I'm at 52#s which is plenty for me , looking forward to your next video, happy hunting!!

      @mattswildpointofview5057  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man, I have a long draw as well at 31" putting my bows into the mid 70s for poundage but really its all about what you shoot well, My girlfriend put a arrow through a nice doe this past season only shooting a 38# long bow. Good luck with that Montana longbow and happy hunting to you.

    I’ve been following along with your videos, and have liked them. I hit 70 years old this past hunting season, so I can no longer shoot my 65# Howatt Hunter. Just hearing the sound of your release brought back memories. Thanks for the videos!
    By the way, shooting a heavyweight bow in my humble opinion is a level up in the traditional bow hunting world. Not everyone can accomplish shooting well in those higher weights. Taking in probably a majority of your deer hunting videos I can say you have done well.

    • @mattswildpointofview5057
      @mattswildpointofview5057  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for following along. I'm very familiar with the Howatt bows and have had a couple I really enjoyed. Glad to hear you are hunting at 70 that really gives me inspiration. The #65-#75 bows give me great trajectory at distance as well as a smooth reliable yet forgiving release while casting heavier arrows with authority. Happy hunting.

    Very true! I hunt public and don’t have land of my own. It can be challenging due to pressure from other hunters and then to have a longbow in your hand makes it really challenging. I missed a really good buck this past year. It plays with your mind, but this video refocus’ my reasons for being a traditional bow hunter. Thanks!

      I was on a hunt in the Rockies with some friends and there friends. I was the only one with a traditional bow. I was looked down on and heard some stupid comments. They were practicing there 75-100 yard shots. The guy with the biggest mouth mist a bull at 7 yards. I was the only one who was successful on that trip. I love the simplicity of the long bow or recurve.

    Luv the video!!! Very well done and about the experience not the kill. Have felt that way for many years now. I’m getting back into traditional hunting but I wasn’t aware how much it was gonna cost me cuz I don’t have nearly enough flannel to be part of that gang😆. Again I mirror your sentiments exactly though even though I like the shiny penny that is modern stuff but for me it totally about the experience of being out there and hopefully kill a deer of any size!!!

  • @edwardlabelle6545

    I have been a traditional archer for 60 yrs. Have hunted several states with my longbow and have harvested just about every critter with four legs or two wings. I make my own arrows and have no bells and whistles. Don't hunt from a heated shack or so called box blind. I prefer to brave the elements. All my friends have turned to the crossbow. So sad. Few archers want the challenge of hunting the hard way, only want the comforts of home. Try Hunting the hard way, the rewards are amazing!! I also live and hunt in Northern Michigan. It's quite the challenge.

    Been shooting trad for years, since 60s. been making selfbows for over a year. switched from camo to plaid etc, a whole lot cheaper. I buy most of my plaid stuff in resale stores, especially at the end of winter when they are clearing the winter stuff out. I only wore the camo in the first place to hide from other hunters since I hunted in public areas. I got very good at hiding my hang on stands to keep them from getting stolen. Simple and easy, stick and string, love it. Though I can't shoot the poundage anymore, I am doing pretty good under 50lbs down to even 40#. really liked your pull over, pretty nice, is it wool?

    • @mattswildpointofview5057
      @mattswildpointofview5057  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with your philosophy. I'm learning to shoot/hunt with a longbow(Montana 50#). Have a ways to go before I'm confident enough to make a humane shot. Now, I just appreciate being in the woods, enjoying nature (and shooting dead stumps). Also, saw a coyote in my backyard for the first time. Think he may be my first victim. Will be looking for more of your videos. Enjoyed.

    Take 4 legs back straps leave the rest for Coyotes paunch shot. Your peaceful nature but aggressively getting out to hunt is a true hunter. True to the bow awesome 👌.
