5 Star Machine Shop, Pine Bluff Arkansas

  • While heading South out of Missouri and through Arkansas, I stopped by 5 Star Machine Shop in Pine Bluff to visit Bill, Dana, and Patrick. Bill has a very well equipped job shop and does a lot of the same work I do myself, serving the local paper mill and other industrial companies in need of machining and repairs. I had a great time visiting them and really enjoyed seeing all of his machines.

    I know this is old but really enjoy seeing theses shops. Too many people to day think that shops have to be brand new, with all CNC equipment. Not true. Old equipment from WWII and before can be rebuilt and used forever, unlike new equipment. Love the friendly people you come across too in these shops. Reminds me of my home town. As a kid back in the 60's I use to spend time at the local job shop and gun smiths shop when they would allow. Learned so much as a kid of how to make things with ingenuity and not the perfect store bought tool. Have carried and used that knowledge throughout my life.

    I like walking through job shops. When other people see "junk piles" on the floor, i see all of the clever solutions to problems and jobs that i have never done.
    I could root through that shop all day.

    I would have liked to see more of that hex broaching attachment in the mill I've never seen one.
    Adam....I really appreciate seeing all the shops you have visited. Been following you for a long time. It never, never gets old. Thank YOU!!!!!!!

      John I will try to get some video the next time i use the Watts drill

    • @xenonram
      @xenonram 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @the machinistA rotary broach is something different. Rotary broaches wiggle, but don't rotate in the cut. these Watts drills actually rotate within the cut. That's why you need a template on a Watts floating chuck. The Watts uses a Realeaux triangle that follows a template, and he corners of that triangle get into the corners of the cut.

    I really dig these shop tours Adam! It's amazing what is out there still in operation that so many folks don't see or even know about. It is so nice to see good folks like these and yourself that do this work every day and keep America on the move because without them, we have nothing. Just having the ability to repair things here on the farm is what compelled myself to put together my own machine shop and it was something I always wanted to do anyhow. Now I have people walking through my shop door with a " hey man" on a regular basis. It is very satisfying work as well as enjoyable for me because I always need a new challenge to build my knowledge and abilities because we never stop learning. TH-cam is a wonderful place for me because the information I gather here is precious to me. Just think of all the combined years of experience from all the YT creators and associates on here that otherwise would not be available to draw from for folks like myself. I have to say I have learned so much over the years from your channel and others like it Adam, but yours is my favorite hands down. Your production quality and content just gets better all the time, and your way of explaining things just clicks with me. You're a great teacher Adam, and your dad and grandad must have been something else! Once again I say a sincere thank you Adam for all you do and share with us on here! Keep the shop tours coming and anything else you decide to put on here. Maybe a nationwide " Abom Tours America's Shops" series could happen someday?

    That Rockwell lathe is pretty neat. Thanks again for introduction to another cool machinist. What an awesome shop. It's amazing how many specialty tools you machinists fab together to do these unique jobs and carve out a niche in the market - filling a need - like using the lathe as a rotary "table" for welding butt-ends on pipes for cylinders. SWEET! Necessity IS the mother of invention.

      Hello Ted from Port Stephens, a couple of hours North of you.
      Very enjoyable Video Adam! The fabricated fixed steady must have some detail on the other side that can't be seen, I always look at these as I need to make one for my small Lathe.
      Cheers all from John, Australia.

    adam.. @10:50 when the lady pulls the wobble drive fixture out and you notice flats.. if you have not finished the keyway cutter bar for the shaper.. when you go to drill the tool slot.. you might want to put a small flat several inches out from the threaded section so you can balance a level across it to verify the angle of the tool.. or make up a square to round toolpiece to slip thru the square broached tool with a machined flat disc welded on.. so you can level the tool that way too.. without needing to put a flat in the side of the shaft.
