    Sisko gets himself ejected from the game. He also accuses Odo of "regenerating" (:D) after Worf has apparently struck out.

    (a) No manager, player, substitute, coach, trainer or batboy shall at any time, whether from the bench, the coach’s box or on the playing field, or elsewhere:

    (2) Use language which will in any manner refer to or reflect upon opposing players, an umpire, or any spectator;
    (3) Call “Time,” or employ any other word or phrase or commit any act while the ball is alive and in play for the obvious purpose of trying to make the pitcher commit a balk.
    (4) Make intentional contact with the umpire in any manner."

      e should've ben ejected earlier, though. You can't argue balls or strikes, either. Work and Sisko should've both been gone.

      @@Emigdiosback The MLB rule book codification changed in 2015 to 6.04. But before that it was 4.06, so at the time of the filming they were correct.

    This is so amazing. From Worf's agitated "reverse the call!" to Sisko accusing Odo of "regenerating" to Odo having memorized the rules and acting like the most stereotypical umpire possible, every note is perfect.

      ...you're both correct, yet, both are technically within the rules, as obscence language is a judgement call by the ump. Touching the ump, in any way, however, is an immediate ejection. It's Odo, he's going to follow the rules to the letter.

    My favourite part of the episode was Odo getting super into being the umpire. He enjoys it way more than if he’d actually been one of the players and it’s great. And also “DEATH TO THE OPPOSITION”

    Worf's reaction to a call not going his way is why Klingons don't play baseball. The players would get into brutal fights to the death every time things didn't go their way or god forbid, if anyone actually cheated! Then the two teams and their fans would get into a multi-generation long blood feud, LOL!

    Gotta love how even in season 7, when we were in the final stretch of the Dominion War, with loads of serious character growth, galaxy-wide stakes, ever-changing alliances, dark choices that make you ponder if the ends truly justify the means, and all kinds of other heavy shit, there were still some episodes like this that were just about FUN.

    I loved this epsiode so much. Odo getting into character like that, Kira in uniform, and Vulcans playing baseball.
    Even that sly grin by the Vulcan captain.
    Things I never knew I needed in Star Trek. But damn I'm glad they exist.

    Odo is probably my favourite star trek character and Rene Auberjonois has great comedic timing. My favourite odo moment has to be when in one episode Worf is criticising security on the station, comparing it to the enterprise. Odo proceeds to grab a padd lying next to him and proceeds to recite a list of security incidents on the enterprise.

      He also had an emotional moment at the end of the show when he is teased by the DS9 crew.

      Yeah, he just stands there dumb founded after being ejected but that's where most managers go nuts because the Ump has already ejected you, there's nothing to lose, he can't double eject you, so go nuts, kick dirt on him, dirty up home plate, kick the chalk up in the box, rip the bases out of the ground and throw them, or take them away, maybe even start throwing shit from your dugout onto the field. Literally every example I just listed has happened in professional baseball

And Worf demanding "REVERSE THE CALL!! REVERSE THE CALL!! LMAO. No umpire woth his salt would reverse that call.

    @adrimare1 Odo was designated umpire because of his reputation for being impartial, precisly why the Bajorans and the Cardassians relyed on him for security during the occupation, both sides (occupation and here) know that he will treat everyone fairly.

    Odo is exactly what a true neutral is like. Good, evil characters, he makes sure the law is respected

      @Jason Smith True neutral. Remember the baseall episode, or how he treats Sisko on the first episode, or any other powers. Stern, gruff but equally. His only faltering is when Kira confessed to his unsolved murder, he just lets it go, I found it very uncharacteristic

      Worf undoubtedly didn't realize that he'd actually been struck out and thought otherwise or else he'd have grudgingly accepted the ruling and stormed off angrily. Worf tends to usually obey the rules even if they act against him though he'll openly express his displeasure at the ones he hates, he IS a Klingon after all.

      Worf was in my mind angry both at Solok giving Sisko a hard time for petty and childish reasons as well as the fact that his team was losing the game so he had a short fuse by this point. He didn't lay a hand on Odo at least, he just argued angrily with him.

    I'd love to see Odo get lippy with Data. Of course, Data would likely never put his hand on Odo, especially with Odo serving as umpire. Now Lore, on the other hand, is a different story.

      Lore would get even angrier then Sisko even IF Lore was sane and had morals and ethics like Data. It's part of Lore's personality to have a short temper and a sharp tongue after all which makes him interesting as it's a stark contrast to Data's even tempered personality /though Data has a sharp tongue too as seen when he argued with the Borg Queen in First Contact/.

      I imagine Data would simply accept that the umpire has the authority to make that ruling. Lore might attack Odo, but without a phaser he can't do much to someone who can become unsolid at will.

    My favorite part of this is that Rom is the only good (yes good💀) player in their whole team. I love Rom episodes as a whole. They always have a sweet spot in my heart.

      I know what you're driving at. In the episode, Rom was the worst of the team, which is why it was celebration that he actually managed to do what was needed to get a run in.
      His actor, however, was the best player out of any of the cast, think he played on the state level at one point. If I recall correctly, he actually had trouble playing badly due to sheer experience.

    I like this episode and my favorite moment of all of DS9 is when Sisko gets ejected. However, Odo has clearly memorized the rulebook, and is a stickler for details. When he told Worf to return to the batter's box and Worf said "Don't rush me" and refused to take his batting position, Odo should have called a strike on him, which would have made him out. Worf violated Rule 5.04{b}{3}.

    Ok, so I decided to go frame by frame to see who got the call right. And Worf and Sisko are right, the ball was way off the corner of the plate. Odo got the call wrong.

    I never question Odo's powers of observation. If he says the ball caught the outside corner, it caught the outside corner.

      The Niners take a very "responding to internet trolls" approach by the end of the episode haha. They COULD sit down and debate the rationality of being pointlessly petty assholes with the guys who pride themselves on how logical they are then weaponize it to irritate people. But instead they just laugh off their pretension and have a good time with their friends instead.

    Never touch the umpire. Forgive my ignorane, but what if a player trips and falls at the umpire or if they accidentally bump in to him or something? Are they out? Or is it only intentional touching that counts?

      Nope. If you read the rule book, there is a couple caveat that specifically deal with those situations. Especially if a base runner is running the hell out and the ump can't get out of the way in time. Happened more than once in MLB and they just laughed it off.

      The actual rule calls for ejection if the player "Intentionally" makes contact with the umpire. That's the loophole.

      Also, bear in mind that an umpire has wide latitude for enforcing the rules at all. For example, this happened once: th-cam.com/video/AgRMwIvDMBQ/w-d-xo.html No umpire's going to eject a guy for that, even though it's clearly intentional contact - and trust me, if an umpire was going to eject you, Joe West is the second most likely to do it.

    first of all I LOVE odo in this scene, second of all, you never touch an umpire, and sisko shouldve called time before going out to yell like that, and insulting the ump the way he does is walking a dangerous line, and my final point, that was absolutely a strike.

    1:14 No player at any time shall make contact with the umpire, in any manner. The prescribed penalty for the violation is immediate ejection from the game. Rule number 4.06 subsection A, paragraph 4, look it up but do it in the stand. YOU'RE GONE!!!!
