    Wow! Great find. Lots of people are completely oblivious to the old history they are holding and what it is actually worth. I am glad that I have gotten into coin collecting and am not oblivious anymore!

    Excellent Video, I watched it six times just to get all the details. I already have three 1874 pennies in my collection, now it looks like I have to find more. Keep up the good work! I took my 8-year-old grandson to the old penny arcade in Great Yarmouth on Thursday we had a great time, and he loved it. Thanks for the videos you have done on it as well.

    I'd rather have the worn-out one! Don't get me wrong I'm not jealous!! No, seriously that is a beautiful 1874 Victoria penny for a fiver. Well done Paul and thanks for sharing. Although I would never buy anything from an eBay seller with a poor-quality photo, I once took a calculated chance at what appeared in the image. For about £8 (probably about 15 years back) I got a near EF 1853 Victoria copper issue penny but as a rule, poor-quality pictures are to be shunned as you say.

    • @CoinPatrol
      @CoinPatrol  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It wasn't till I got it out into the sunlight that I realised just how goot it was.
      An EF 1853 copper even 15 years ago was a great bargain for £8, nice. 👍

    A good source of old coins is the arcade at the restored pier at Swanage, Dorset. You can buy handfuls old bronze pennies, at face value, for the antique slot machines.

    Great find! I can't find a single 'junk shop' / 'antique shop' / 'bric-à-brac' shop near me that even sells coins...Where was this place in East Anglia, again? 😀

    I've read all the comments and no-one took you up on your VF rating! I find that many coins sit between grades, and this looks like a case in point. Personally I would grade this as VF/EF (or gVF or nEF ... all much the same thing). Def. better than VF imo, and pushing EF. Cracking coin, great video, well done!

    Sadly I sold my collection many years ago, I had one of the best collections of victorian bronze pennies in the country. Included 1877 close date in good fine (best specimen known).
    , 1861 freeman 5+G EF. 1861 6+F g fine, 1861 4+F aEF. 1897 high tide UNC. plus many more.

    • @CoinPatrol
      @CoinPatrol  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, you had some very nice pennies there. Shame you had to let them go. Finding a great condition 1877 8+H has been a dream of mine.👍

    • @vicreadies
      @vicreadies 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That '77 narrow date F90 is a seriously expensive penny. Believe it or not I currently have 5, the best being NVF .I paid over 7k for mine. Yours is currently worth about the same despite a slightly lower grade. .The '97 High Tide in Unc. also a tough one.( Mine is CGS82) Your 1861's.... F28 then F24 ( only a few known. Mine is VG only and cost £1287 in 2012, ) I would have certainly snapped up the latter !!

    • @manupman7461
      @manupman7461 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@vicreadies I currently live in Thailand..... NO Vic pennies here ha ha. After I sold the collection the values got seriously expensive. I discovered the fairly common 1882/1 penny verified by the Royal Mint. Met Freeman several times and was friends with the late Laurie Bamford.

    Very good find, proving there are bargains out there to be found if you are in the right place at the right time with the right expertise! Another difference between reverses G and H is that on G the date numerals are widely spaced and on H they are narrowly spaced. To add to the fun, I believe that there are at least two different numeral spacings on the 1874 wide date varieties as well!

    Great 1874 Penny and a very instructive video - many thanks. On checking my 1874's I think I have an example of (No H) Obverse 7 Reverse G and Obverse 7 Reverse H (one worn the other has great detail but with something stuck to it or corrosion of some kind) and Heaton Mint 1874 2 x Obverse 7 Reverse G one poor one much better condition, and an Obverse 8 Reverse G. Great to know which edition of Bronze Coinage of Great Britain you are using ? I tracked down the 1985 edition but find it rather difficult as its not in colour ! Thanks again !
