So fun to see Dan Snow and Chris Barker geek out over coins. We need more of this. We went to the royal mint on a recent trip to wales. The tour and exhibit are impressive will the ancient coins they have displayed. Also enjoyed the kings new definitive coins (circa 2023).
The most expensive coin in the world was a 1933 $20 USA double eagle achieving an auction record of $18.9 million. I don't think the Edward VIII proof sovereign would get anywhere near that but I do suspect it would now sell in excess of £1 million if auctioned. Totally unique and historically valuable. I squirmed when I saw how Dan was handling it, elevated with no gloves and about to drop it any second, thus damaging it's proof finish.
Looks like the "caretakers" of the Royal Mint have already damaged it over the years. Of course, the 1849 $20...if sold...would bring more, but it's impounded at the Smithsonian, so no dice.
You’ve took a very unusual subject with only a small amount of serious interest and turned it into a very enjoyable and fascinating watch! You’ve taken a mediocre topic and made it very entertaining. Seriously, your last few posts have been 10s. Well done History Hit
7:21 The image shows the second young Victoria portrait. That original young head portrait was changed in 1874, and that second, slightly-aged portrait remained well into the 1880s, when Victoria was in her 60s.
I'm a wee bit of a royal jewels nerd, so I know that the two "crowns" Elizabeth II wore on British coins are the George IV State Diadem (made for George IV to be worn by monarchs, but subsequently only worn by Queens) identifiable by the Maltese crosses, and the Girls of Great Britain and Irland Tiara (made for a committee of aristocratic women who called themselves the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland as a wedding present for Mary of Teck, who was marrying the future George V, and given to then-Princess Elizabeth as a wedding present).
Yup, unless the coin came out of the ground or the sea, polishing coins usually downgrades the condition of the coin by 0% (coin is already in awful condition) to 99% (proof or mint state coin) by covering the coin with thousands of tiny scratches.
The Royal Mint would make so much money if they issued an Edward VIII official restrike or special collector coin based on an original portrait die. Talk about leaving money on the table.
I absolutely love this video. You showed things I would have never had the chance to see otherwise. Thank you. But for the title: The Edward VIII proof gold sovereign is not the most expensive coin in the world, although it is incredibly precious.
You mean Edward 8. Canada and the rest of the Empire had plenty of Edward 7. And I'm afraid, no. No Edward 8 portrait coins were issued anywhere. There were coins with his name on them issued in Africa, New Guinea and Fiji, all with a hole in the center and no portrait.
@@theflyingdutchman1432 But why bother? It's not a numismatic museum. It's a historical museum of just it's own history, which makes sense. Also, England already has a literal and actual cultural appropriation issue as their museums are full of other peoples' precious items already.
First time in British coinage history no heraldically lead coinage? So what about the 1973 50p piece with the crossed hands on the back? What about those with Peter Rabbit on the back, ssand what about those that ahve images depicting industry and battle commemorations?
Coins were massively important, empires fail when the intrinsic value of then coins get debased. Can you imagine a 22ct gold sovereign struck at 7 mints globally, debased to being struck in only 9ct gold, the absolute minimum to still be called gold.
The official portraits of Elizabeth 2 & Charles 3 have one 'striking' difference 😉 The Queen, facing right, is 'looking forwards ' The King, facing left, is 'looking backwards' I really don't want to collect any coins with C3 on them.
Whether it does or it doesn't, everyone either follows the US standard or it doesn't since the US sets the standards for all of numismatics. US Coins that are less than 250 years old sell for double digit millions while top ancient coins sell for like 1/10 to 1/100000th of that.
Many collectors were disappointed with the 5p not following Kruger Gray's designs having on George V coinage having 6 acorns and oak leaves on the 6d and 3 on the 3d, thus should have had 5 acorns etc on the 5p?
A million pounds is about currently as of 08/24, around 1.5 million dollars. It just goes to show how little value British history has on the open market. 1.5 million $US is no where near the most expensive coin...I'm not sure if it's even top 25. You can see the list on Wikipedia "List of most expensive coins" and these are all last auction prices. The vast majority, like 4/5 are US or US history-related (like the Brasher Doubloon), with the top seven being all US including all of the double digit millions $US coins. And then approximately a chunk of that non-US 1/5th is Chinese history-related. And on a side note, there are multiple coins on that list that are American but are so highly coveted that they don't come up for sale and thus the last sold copy is more than more than ten years ago. The most notable example is the 1913 Liberty Head nickel (5 known specimens) that last sold in 2007 for a measly 5 million dollars. Considering how many TV shows have been done about it, if one came up for sale, I could see it maybe going to #1 possibly from the #13 spot it's in now. But with only 5, likely someone will have to pass or come close to it, for one to come up on the market.
Clickbait garbage. £1 million is not the most expensive coin in the world or even close. The *American* 1933 Double Eagle is the most expensive coin in the world.
I don't want to sound pessimistic or anything, but what's the point in minting new coins now that the current monarch will most likely kick the bucket before the project gets finished?
