    I think it would be fun with infinite pp on showdown, because for me metronome should just be a random mess of stuff being thrown around, not just stalling.

      Imo, the little statistical analysis of stuff like "omg I'll use Gengar who has the ability to curse body" and cb Machamp and life Orb zam are cool, and still follow the spirit because in the end you are still using metronome. Infinite pp would be a cool meta

    I think the solution would just be to make the turn timer extremely short, you dont need 45 seconds to decide you're gonna use metronome

      20 seconds is plenty to decide what to switch to
      They use metronome there's no prediction and again it's luck so you don't need much time to decide to switch or use dynamax

      Nah no need for a short timer. Just give two separate timers to players, same as turn timers, you run out of total time, you lose. Stalling problem solved.

    Honestly I respect that people put that much thought into a really silly metagame and managed to come out with the most efficient and lame strats possible.

      I disagree with giving them respect, they took something that should have been a fun and wacky game mode and made it into a 20 minute snorefest or into a game with hundreds of turns as they switch back and forth.

    I can't really say I'm surprised. Competitive players' top priority is to win, and leaving things up to random chance isn't exactly conducive to that. So they found the 2 things in the format that're actually consistent (the timer and Metronome PP) and found ways to play around those

      @@borismuller86 you can't. You either have a timer, or you don't have a timer. If there is a timer, then the timer can always sit in the back of your mind as a win condition, and you have to consider that when coming up with plans. If there's no timer, well... this video shows what can happen. You can pick which you prefer, but you have to accept all the consequences of that, either way around.

    Also, by using black sludge on Gengar, it's possible that metronome will draw a move that switches items with the opponent. Then, of course, black sludge deals damage to non-poison types

    You should cover Suicide Cup, a metagame where you win by losing. It has a lot of interesting strategies and Pokemon.

      I assume that if you KO someone's last Pokemon with selfdestruct, the win goes to them and not you? Because otherwise, I don't see how an all-selfdestruct team can be countered.

      @@MrCheeze Suicide moves like Self-Destruct and Memento are banned since they would make it too easy to kill yourself. The best strategy is to use things like Toxic Orb and Black Sludge to damage yourself, and moves like Heal Pulse are popular too.

      @@MrCheeze self destruct is banned. And even if it wasn’t damp exist. Your whole team would have to pp stall themselves or die to black sludge while a poliwhirl hypnotizes you switches out to have someone else do their thing ( maybe curse mon with trick giving you a leftovers) and then it switched back in and uses roar to get rid of curse. You’d hard lose some matchups which are essentially people bringing tech to prevent their opponents from dying while having options to die themselves.

      @@MrCheeze moves that instantly kill the user (explosion, misty explosion, self destruct, memento, healing wish, lunar dance) are banned, although healing wish and lunar dance would be a little counterproductive. You also don't want to run recoil moves like double-edge or Head Smash since that means you're damaging the opponent. I can't remember if it's banned or not but Assault Vest + no attacking moves makes you struggle automatically which is weak and always does 1/4th of your health
      Back in Gen 7 (so more mons) there were some pretty cool techs, like Smeargle running Purify to beat Toxic Orb opponents. Even though it restored half of Smeargle's HP to do that, it was sometimes worth it to prevent the opponent from dying to their own poison. I also remember seeing skill swap Magic Guard Alakazam to prevent opponents from taking passive damage inflicted on themselves

    If you ever try the metronome battle format on showdown (not the press your luck format), it’s also has a different meta and is a 2v2 double battle. Not only are Pokémon allowed that don’t naturally learn metronome, but it is also possible to use create a Pokémon characters, pokestar studios characters and even missingno! It is also possible to use almost any ability. It is a wild and fun meta.

    There are things they could do to make it harder to at least timer stall- like make it so that the time to input a move is greatly reduced, while the time of the battle itself remains at about 30 minutes.

      Easiest method for stopping timer stalling is giving a chess timer equivalent (which i think already sort of exist in game), where you auto forfiet if your own timer run's out. Now you can no longer timer stall unless your individual timer exceed to total remaining match timer.

    That was so sad. Metronome Battles are always such a fun concept to simply click buttons and have fun, and people made it so it was the most boring format in existence, even more on showdown. At least we have the actual Metronome Battle tier that is very cool and fun to play

      I also love Metronome singles where each side has 6 mons just like in regular OU. With more mons, you have more uses of Metronome, and if you roll an entry hazard, your opponent can no longer switch around freely.
      Also mons like rocky helmet ferrothorn are just mean in this format. I had an enemy KO themselves from 100 % by helmet and iron bars recoil when they rolled Arm Thrust against my ferrothorn...

      @@troykv96 I play a different game mode from the one described in the video. It's a doubles format with only 2 pokemon so there wasn't any switching to go around. But you could change their abilities so you could see some real wacky stuff go down.

    I remember watching the whole video of this tournament, learning about the meta, & enjoying it, despite how standardized & optimized it had been! Being played in the games itself also meant getting to see the animations, too, which was fun! I hope people do something like it again! (Although, I can understand people choosing other means of battles for formats that are harder to implement.)

    Yeah metronome can really struggle to do meaningful damage a lot of the time. This is why whenever I did metronome battles with friends we usually agreed to run a bunch of offensively specced Primeapes in Anything Goes so things actually could get KO'd.

    Tbh you should make a video on NFE, which is a format for the stage two evolutions. It’s a metagame where an Electivire line member (electabuzz) is actually viable

    It should also be worth nothing that a very viable strategy that me and quite a few other top players used, especially on Showdown, was intentionally saving metronomes to use it on Grimmsnarl. Frequently people would avoid attacking it with Dusknoir/Dusclops or your own Grimmsnarl so you didn’t lose your item as you mentioned, but attacking with Gengar gave a non-poison type a Black Sludge due to Pickpocket. Setting the battle on a timer like this really helped limit the amount of stalling your opponents could use in the endgame

    Another thing is that the immense move pool that metronome can call from has more normal type attacking moves than any other type, making ghost types particularly well suited to stall out metronome.

    i wonder if people tried using assault vests as switch in mons for grimmsnarl, yeah you'd be putting you mon at risk for struggle but you could also completely neutralize their grimsnarl if pickpocket hits

    Metronome is best when it's not taken seriously. I had a small competition on Discord where we used Bidoof with four Metronome and Leppa Berry, Moody, neutral nature, max EVs in everything, and a lot of fun. Allowing stall is just blegh

    "Given the opportunity players will do everything to optimize the fun out of a game" has never been more true than here
    Thats why metronome formats wont ever work and shouldnt be a part. Its something you can do in private leagues or stuff where there are extra rules in play to avoid stall methods so it can be a real test of luck

    i play a lot of 2v2 metronome battles on smogon, the changes make it super interesting compared to official ones. 2v2 doubles, almost any ability, almost any pokemon, , steel types banned, over 625bst banned, healing items banned. it really comes down to teambuilding and 1 of the strongest teams ppl use is actually double choice band mega heracross with intrepid sword - very low bulk n mid special attack but over 1500 attack from the start. another interesting n common strat is sturdinja using a level 1 pokemon with sturdy and sticky barb and a shedinja with receiver or power of alchemy

    As for the smogon case just give both player's a 1-2 hour chess timer each that never regain's time, your run out of time on your match timer you forfiet, you would still retain the incremental turn timer that already exists.
    This would solve their need for the insanely complex ban on fun-bro and it's variant's since the game would eventually end.

    Showdown has a unique doubles Metronome Battle format (that real ones remember as "Shitmons") where you can use any Pokemon with almost any ability and maxed EVs. There was still a banlist, largely things that circumvent Metronome (i.e. Rough Skin, Jaboca) or healing berries and any Pokemon with more than 600 BST.
    Some unique things from that format:
    - Assault Vest Deoxys-A was meta for a brief period, before being banned for just circumventing Metronome straight to killing things with Struggle.
    - You can use Smogon's custom Pokemon and the Pokestars Pokemon. Pokestars Pokemon were largely very good due to having Mythical stats with their typing. Notably, one of them was Dark/Ghost and running 2 of them with Storm Drain and Lightningrod was highly effective.
    - I personally got something banned from the format. That being Berserk Gene. I abused it with Own Tempo Mega Heracross to gamble into smashing things with physical moves as M-Hera had the highest ATK of any legal Pokemon even before the +2 ATK from Berserk Gene. Best part is that it applied "invisibly" so every game was met by ????s as I get a free stat buff out of nowhere.

    TwitchPlaysPokémon's Battle Revolution Metronome battles disallow switching, specifically to avoid the issues that PS ran into with its Metronome metagame (they found out about the same strategy the hard way when it was initially implemented).

    Late but you could try watching MandJtv metronome cup were they have a lot of rules like only leppa berry, neutral nature, and if you switch in you must atleast do one move if you're able to and it lead to some of the most fun metronome games ever

    So in conclusion, things might've been better with Infinite PP (So as not to go Infinite Switching for fear of Struggle recoil.) & Infinite Timer to avoid Timer Stall?

    is the metronome DOUBLES format different than singles? there you could use rules similar to "almost any ability" and even the species clause is disabled

    I love metronome. On my monotype psychic team I have a Hypno that knows metronome, hypnosis, dream eater, and nightmare. Metronome has been useful exactly twice. Other times it does stupid stuff like pulling misty explosion at full hp

    Seems like an easy fix with some format rules. Either ban Pressure, ban switching, set a limit to switching (e.g. max one switch every five turns), ban certain game breaking Pokémon, or a mixture of these rules.
    I like the Pickpocket strategy because you can counter it and win with sticky hold leftovers for example, making room for moderately intelligent play. The problem is that most/all of these strategies would likely auto lose to Pressure, so I think banning that ability and nerfing switching are the main things that need to be addressed.

    It seems like VGC would lessen timer stall on WiFi as you could potentially lose multiple PKMN in one turn so want to leave yourself time to catch up, plus it means that every move can be used

    Honestly GameFreak should really just make a competitive pokemon with good not so short timers and actual animation skipping functionality. It is so not hard to implement, but as this is GameFreak we're talking about here, I'm not surprised that they haven't implemented such thus far, especially since they're basicslly part of a company with even more archaic and terrible online services. They literally just have to implement Smogon's timer system which punishes timer stallers and does not punish people who click a move early and have to wait out any potential staling.

      not much, even with all 48 metronome uses there will still be a lot of games were you just spend all 48 of them without killing all 3 pokemon. Metronome is just to bad to consistently win the game before it runs out of PP (or the timer)
      really the only ways you could "fix" a metronome battle, would be make the format 1v1 (so no switch stalling) or to give metronome infinite PP.

    They could've disabled abilities and give metronome infinite PP so that the better stat versatility and type coverage won but no, let's allow the ability that disables moves and the other that makes the move less usable.

    Was there ever an attempt to bypass Metronome altogether and focus on using Struggle with Regenerator? I'm guessing it didn't work, since none of the Pokemon listed at 5:45 had that ability, I'm just curious what pitfalls prevented it from working out.

    I love metronome battles, they are a lot of fun, but being able to witch around freely ruins it
    Of course you should be able to switch if your metronome is disabled or your opponent gets a multiple turn move that will surely knock you out
    But both of these time and pp stall strategies are just trying to avoid the entire point of metronome battles.
