    Ting-Lu has the math on his side because of the Fissure Stomping Tantrum combo. If you miss the Fissure your Stomping Tantrum doubles in power during the next turn, so you're effectivly not losing damage in situations where you'd just chip away with Stomping Tantrum anyways.

    • @tdawgmaster1729

    OHKO moves are hilarious in nature. They’re generally so bad due to the low accuracy, but the few Pokémon that can make them work do so marvelously. In closed team sheets, they can also be entirely unexpected, creating moments of hype and laughter if they land.

    While the effectiveness of the strategy is debatable, the ability to fix an OKHO's accuracy with Mind Reader/Lock-On is also quite rare and only ever possible from 3 Pokemon: Smeargle, Articuno and gen 7 Poliwrath. Poliwrath is an especially interesting case because it has access to both Hypnosis and Focus Punch to punish Pokemon looking to switch out of the accuracy lock. Sadly, Mind Reader has been removed from Articuno's movepool in gen 9, which sucks because that's the only thing the Pokemon has ever been good at after gen 1

    • @loftilywrongly3483
      @loftilywrongly3483 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Articuno has a tiny niche in gen 3 Smogon singles because of heal bell, though I don't think it's ever used in serious teams. It used to be able to run a rest + sleep talk pressure stall set, and I think it was used on old superman teams, but that's not very effective anymore because of the 2015 discovery of gen 3 sleep talk mechanics.

    • @iss2075
      @iss2075 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Poliwrath could do that in Gen II as well. At least there was one in Pokemon Stadium 2 which had that combo. But I guess VGC didn't exist back then.

  • @sealeo5772
    @sealeo5772 ปีที่แล้ว +70

    It's not exactly VGC, but ohko moves were a pretty big deal in the gen 1 competitive formats that Nintendo ran in the 90s.due to gen 1 reasons. Everything was more bulky due to the stat experience system, most of the pokemon had nothing better in their movepools, double team was good and everyone was a Japanese child with a gameboy in the 90s who didn't really know the game mechanics. Oh, and in Japanese red and green, Blizzard has 90 accuracy and a 30% chance to freeze, effectively making it an ohko move that is still a 120 base power ice move if it misses.

    @aSh-pi1in ปีที่แล้ว +8

    3:30 this is true for VGC and Online Battles, however, OHKO moves start at 30% and Gain a +1% per level, so for them to be guaranteed, you need to have a 70 level difference, also when used by a non Ice Type in gen 7 (idk about 8 and 9), sheer cold accuracy goes from 30% to 20%

  • @SpectreXS

    I never knew that the event gen 4 suicune had Sheer Cold as an exclusive move! Another event-only oddity from these days that makes running the event mon itself - shiny with cherish ball in this case - optimal, even if you're not running sheer cold itself. All 4 moves from this event suicune were event-only as well, lol. Also one of the infinite reasons to use save editors.

    • @AceAviations2
      @AceAviations2 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was the worst of the three event Shiny Legendary Beasts, that is why you'd forget about it.
      Entei EASILY got it the best with an Adamant Nature (the ONLY better nature would be Jolly) AND BOTH Extreme Speed and Flare Blitz. The other two moves were trash, however you could slot in Stone Edge and ether Iron Head or Sacred Fire starting in Gen6. Give it a Choice Band and you have a pretty powerful threat in the lower tiers of Smogon, though I've found that Rockium Z can be used to decent effect to mitigate the risk of Stone Miss, well missing.
      Raikou got Aura Sphere, however it was locked to a Rash Nature (+Special Attack, -Special Defense), not Timid or Modest, and the other three moves were trash for it. You were better off using a Raikou without Aura Sphere for the flexible nature, however there is a 7th Gen set on Smogon that uses the Aura Sphere event in combination with the Fighting type Z-Crystal to deal with the rock types of RU.
      Suicune on the other hand got locked into a crappy nature for it (Relaxed, +Defense, -Speed) and only had one truly good move for it, Aqua Ring, which doesn't compare to Aura Sphere. OHKO moves are banned by Smogon (which I 100% agree with, unlike the complete Baton Pass ban*), so that move is unusable. Given that event mons are often banned (even if they're not Mythical) there is no place that you can use it.
      *I'm not arguing that something had to be done with Baton Pass, but outright banning the move was just too far. Banning it being combined with ways to boost stats and things that can be passed (Mean Look, Ingrain, etc.) would have allowed it to be used as a pivot move that couldn't be countered by Pursuit, removing some healthy counterplay to Pursuit-Trapping in the process.
