    I relate a hundred times.
My hair grew out so fast, thick and long, and I, literally, couldn't manage it. Like you, I never wore my hair out. You'd only catch my hair undone on my way to the salon.
The only times I dealt with my hair myself were on wash days, which I, intentionally, kept few and far between. There were no natural hairdressers in my area that could afford the patience it required without charging me through the roof.
The only protective style I wore were braids-usually one one-and I wore them for weeeeeks. Ironically, this grew my hair even more (maybe not ironically, but you get my drift). I dreaded wash days, even if my sister offered to help. I would cry, my back would hurt, my neck would ache, my arms would kill, all because of natural hair. A whole day dedicated to just taking out the braids and washing my hair, and another to making it.
It wasn't until I got admitted into a Master's, I decided I couldn't deal anymore. I remember that day clearly; it was as though I was under an influence. I just snipped at the braids very close to their roots. For a minute, I stunned myself. After undoing those sorry stubs for a braid, I was waiting for some emotion to hit me. Something. Regret. Pain. Shame. Melancholy. Anything.
But nothing did. It wasn't after I'm sat on the barber's chair, and he says, "E mecha go m," I look at myself, oil-faced, bordered by these large gold hoop earrings, and I loved it! Last month made it a year, and I, absolutely, recommend, black woman or not. It is just hair, your hair. Have fun with it whilst you can. Don't let these black hair community gatekeepers rain on your parade. They are the split ends you need to trim if you want to be great.
Do I apologise for the long read? Hehe.

I relaxed my hair yesterday for the first time in 6 years and I couldn’t be more happy. A lot of people gave unsolicited advice, saying ‘I’m spoiling my hair’, ‘ people are praying for the type of hair you’re about to ruin’ but honestly, I’m so happy about my decision because my natural hair was really difficult to maintain.

I feel you Kamsi. You dont owe anyone an explanation. I been natural 16 years and it has its up and downs. The key is HEALTHY hair and im happy your going to professionals. The issue with perms is many people esp in Africa dont do it properly causing extreme hair damage. Like you mentioned your only supposed to relax the roots NOT the entire hair. I wear my hair out alot but since you dont much I def see why you want to relax it cause wigs are annoying. I can only do them for weeks at a time 😂

This video was so convenient for me, I could relate to every single thing you said, I've had my natural hair on for like 6years plus, and just recently I started thinking about relaxing cause it became too stressful to maintain and not easy to manipulate, and crazy thing is we have similar hair types, lengths and fullness, so this video was super relatable in that aspect, I also became sure as of recent on when exactly I plan to relax it, all in all, this gave me the extra reassurance I needed

My natural 4c hair was not for me. That's why i opted for microlocs.
I should not accidentally doze off on my couch and have literal anxiety upon waking when i realize i didn't tie up my hair beforehand. I should not spend hours upon hours washing/detangling/styling my hair. I should never cry in my bathtub because it's 1am, I'm tired, and the product i just used shrank my hair into a ball of knots i can't get out.
On top of all of this, I'm tenderheaded. I was just tired. You did what was best for you, kudos.

I relaxed my hair a month ago. Even let it set and it was bone straight. One month later I just did a protein treatment and it’s so curly again. I wish I could share photos. I def can tell the difference though because it’s curly with less shrinkage and it doesn’t hurt to comb. Do it or go to a professional, but don’t let anyone make you feel bad about how you maintain YOUR hair ❤
I’ll add that this time I sought out to learn hair care more. I use less heat and I also incorporate flexi rod curling and pin curls method. My hair is at least 14 inches and it’s thriving in a relaxed state. I keep my scalp greased and my hair moisturized.

I will admit that some of the comments are sad; and they show how insecure a lot of Black women truly are. You can relax your hair if you want; but saying “you think you look prettier now” or “natural isn’t for me” (when it’s the hair that grows from your scalp); it’s mind blowing to me.

    • @poisonapple146

If you maintain it by going to a hairdresser it could work out to be healthy but straight for another 5 years. I think it’s when we decide to save money and play hairdresser on ourself and start relaxing it on our own is when issues arise. A professional looking in might be what we all need. I swear in the 90’s there was no issues with hair being relaxed and I was kid but my mom would go to the hair salon every 2 weeks. I would get it relaxed when needed and washed and treated in between. When she stopped going to the hairdresser and started doing it herself and then me learning to do and taking over is when there was major breakage.
