Geez Toriyama is like Goku isn't he? He needs his editors. They're his "friends" that give him strength. But the staff can rarely give Dragonball the "ompf" Toriyama can. They rely on him so much, and for good reason. So what about Toyotaro...is he Vegeta? He seems to plan things out a lot more, but he also follows a little too closely behind, always using what worked in the past, just putting his own flair on it. Just look at Moro, who so far is a melting pot of hold ideas scrambled together into one great character. Toyotaro is only keeping up, not replacing Toriyama. So, will he "surpass him in his own way", or simply play the role of sideman forever?
Well, considering that he wrote Dr. Slump beforehand, which was a gag manga, I guess some of the weird factors there were put on Dragon Ball, especially during the Pilaf Saga. Edit - Like breaking the fourth wall, for example.

I actually kind of respect this unusual work ethic of Toriyama because he seemed to value more so the story and characters than the world around them, and I think it’s partly what lead to the franchises success and appeal. In this day and age of geekdoom too much focus is put on world-building, certain fandoms even put lore above everything else and praise complex magic systems, monarchies, made up histories as revolutionary or smart. But, very little attention is put on the characters or the themes of the story because I guess people aren’t discerning enough to appreciate or understand it. Why do you think there’s soo many theory channels rampant on examining every minute detail of fake world looking for explanations or clues? But, Dragon Ball largely avoided this stigma because Toriyama’s world’s seem pretty straightforward and simple, and it exists to serve the story. We don’t even get answers to crucial information about the Saiyan’s history till decades after Z’s ending. That level of restraint is kind of admirable because the narrative benefited from it so much more. I’d argue that Super’s knack of answering endless questions and reintroducing new Saiyans has caused some divide between the fandom to say the least for the aforementioned reasons (canon debates, Saiyan biology making no sense, God’s presence robbing the stakes, etc.) That’s not to say I’m against world-building, as rules and logic in your world need to exist or else nothing would matter. It’s just Toriyama’s method of writing the story first, and filling the blanks in later that I find to be a compelling compromise. The guy may be a little lazy, forgetful and cuts corners to get things done, but in some ways, he’s kind of a genius, even if he doesn’t realize it.
I take a lot of influence as a Dungeon Master from Toriyama's writing style. I worldbuild on the fly and use name puns when I need to come up with character names. Helps me focus on the narrative elements more as the world can be changed to fit these best, and helps future proof the story when the PCs do something unexpected. Maybe a video in how DMs can learn from Toriyama?

I'm glad he didn't, as Future Trunks is my favorite character, but as someone that's followed DB since it first premiered in the US in the late 90s, I just can't stand where he's taken the franchise. At this point, the fans have written better what-ifs than his canon.
Using real life locations means the possibility of getting things wrong. This is your story, it should be your world... A nice bit of wisdom from Toriyama. I think fanfics writers can relate to this problem. As well as anyone that tries for a realistic Earth based setting.
Oh definitely Toriyama honestly forgets his work. I recall a past fan meet and greet. He was taking signature and drawings. A fan asked for a SSJ 2 Goku. Toriyama drew a SSJ3. DC for example all has Atlantis, dinosaurs, ancient wizards, intergalactic empires, killer robots, interdimensional gods, parallel universes, cosmic forces, mystic martial arts schools, talking squirrels & many more. Nobody questions it because it's just fun to throw everything together & seeing what happens.
This weirdness gave us the most iconic moment in Anime! The way Toriyama makes everything fitting retroacively is just genius! And that makes certain revelations absolutely genuine, as well.
I thought of an idea for a Dragon Ball story Krillin finds out he was an alien all along the alien race that evolved from worms he came from a planet that was destroyed by Frieza please do that in your what if series masakox

I'd much rather Toriyama's mentality toward his fandom than, say, the Star Wars franchise trying endlessly to please everyone. This also REALLY does help explain how move names seem to get less wordy and more abstract as the sagas went on. "Yeah, yeah, just call them the 'Burning Attack' and the 'Assault Rain.'"
(i'd honestly say masakox of shonen jumps recent series dragonball & one piece ar pretty charmingly weird.:3)i honestly prefer the weirdness of the original dragonball/saiyan saga of z & toriyamas other works compared to z(which lost some of it in areas outside of certain characters when it focused too much on fighting at the cost of it being bare/show toriyama works better in lighthearted gag with quirky flow format than being completely serious.) and i like that the silliness and original charm is being brought back in the games/recent dragonball.(imo in terms of stuff for recent dragonball i'd love to see along with the dragon ball room explore parts of the dragon ball world's characters they bring more stuff from the games into it like fu,towa and the time breakers as they did state if she was popular enough which is plain to see android 21 will be added to the main series with some clues given to how,reworking some of gt's elements in like the shadow dragons and super saiyan 4,bringing launch& dragon balls other characters,bardock,gine and raditz back and adapting the events of online as it is canon while changing the end of z to fit recent stuff and i always before its resurgence thought z's ending needed a change anyway.:3)
All I got from this video is that Gokou is Toriyama as they kind of have the same kind of thought process and planning and sometimes forget crucial things.
You should check out the Dr. Slump manga volumes, Masako! They have little blurbs at the end of chapters where Toriyama talks about how he comes up with stories on the fly.
I like to do a lot of writing. Last story I did I tried to make it up as I go along. By the time I finished one arc I ended up having 80 percent of the story planned out. I'm not sure how he does it.

I view Dragon ball as D&D, Toriyama as the DM. Us as the players, We want more stuff and to have more content. Content Toriyama doesnt have planned but quickly improvises when needed. He doesnt have all the answers, Yet he can answer all the questions, Even when there is no answer
Sadly to some extent he gave into his later editors like how the Android and Cell arcs went. Still most of us enjoyed it, but looking back at discussions and being critical of the story pace we can see he was forced to change things because his editors at that time kept pestering him. Even though his editor for Buu Saga was more hands off it seemed the prior damage was done and why Toriyama was on some kind of autopilot while making it. So from going to overbearing editor to a near hands off editor had negative implications in my viewpoint. Still I enjoy Toriyama stuff, but I also understand he needs a balanced editor which is hard to come by.

Yes Dragon Ball can be strange, but it is part of its charm, I compare its rare moments as if they were those of the movies of men in black. They seem odd yet they are normal for the world of men in black.

Why Dragon Ball Is So Weird (and Toriyama Doesn't Care!) IKR!? Ever since I first discovered the Dazenuwhachamacallit, Toriyama's interviews just downright interested yet confused me and left me somewhat disappointed. I still love this franchise, always will, but I just don't feel as strongly into it like I used to be. For that, I'm kinda glad though, otherwise, I would've never branched out to watch/read other shows and books.
If Toriyama were a baker, he wpuld make you an Apple Pie a la mode when you asked for cherry. Its unexpected, many consumers will be unhappy, yet its over the top, full of effort and absolutely delicious.
Yea I can see how Toriyama isn't the most antagonistic towards fans. Especially not when contrasted to someone like Shinichiro Shirakura. Course on the other hand, he's no Masahiro Sakurai, trolling fans _even when he gives them exactly what they want_ like with the King K Rool and Banjo Kazooie reveal trailers for example, both of which played off of each other due to DKC's relation to Rare. Also the "Ridley is too big taunt" in Smash Ultimate.

Don't think the weirdness of Dragon Ball can compare to the weirdness of One Piece. The only difference is that Dragon Ball deals with actual gods and powers that can destroy planets with the flip of a finger.
I think some last minute planing is involve. Like the Namek thing. Which was concieved 2 Arcs before it happen. Otherwise you end up like Araki and having to write asspulls because sometimes he didn't exactly planed how the heroes were meant to defeat the enemy in the first place.
Alright, so if Krillin is an alien, then it definitely makes sense why he's stronger than all the other earthlings. It has been know throughout the series that beings with non-earth dna can become infinitely stronger than that of a human...with the exception of Roshi. But then again, with him even living for as long as he did, dying by the time Goku's and Vegeta's great or great-great grandchildren were out of the toddler stages, he may be an alien himself or just used the dragon balls when we weren't looking in the time jump of dragon ball and z.
It says something about Toriyama's skills when he can just fly by at the seat of his pants and create one of the most iconic series to date. Imagine if Oda did that for One piece. That would actually solidify him to be an actual God in mortal form.

It was popular when Goku and Bulma were younger with even King Furry taking some. Eventually, the fad passed and most of the beastmen returned to normal. Also, funny enough, #16 revealed that the Red Ribbon Army sold their own brand of Animorphaline to help get funding for their world domination plans. Their's however, was extra strength and didn't wear off. So, one side quest was helping a couple beastmen make an antidote so they could become human again.

(i'd honestly say masakox of shonen jumps recent series dragonball & one piece ar pretty charmingly weird.:3)i honestly prefer the weirdness of the original dragonball/saiyan saga of z & toriyamas other works compared to z(which lost some of it in areas outside of certain characters when it focused too much on fighting at the cost of it being bare/show toriyama works better in lighthearted gag with quirky flow format than being completely serious.) and i like that the silliness and original charm is being brought back in the games/recent dragonball.(imo in terms of stuff for recent dragonball i'd love to see along with the dragon ball room explore parts of the dragon ball world's characters they bring more stuff from the games into it like fu,towa and the time breakers as they did state if she was popular enough which is plain to see android 21 will be added to the main series with some clues given to how,reworking some of gt's elements in like the shadow dragons and super saiyan 4,bringing launch& dragon balls other characters,bardock,gine and raditz back and adapting the events of online as it is canon while changing the end of z to fit recent stuff and i always before its resurgence thought z's ending needed a change anyway.:3)
All I got from this video is that Gokou is Toriyama as they kind of have the same kind of thought process and planning and sometimes forget crucial things.
You should check out the Dr. Slump manga volumes, Masako! They have little blurbs at the end of chapters where Toriyama talks about how he comes up with stories on the fly.

I like to do a lot of writing. Last story I did I tried to make it up as I go along. By the time I finished one arc I ended up having 80 percent of the story planned out. I'm not sure how he does it.

Sadly to some extent he gave into his later editors like how the Android and Cell arcs went. Still most of us enjoyed it, but looking back at discussions and being critical of the story pace we can see he was forced to change things because his editors at that time kept pestering him. Even though his editor for Buu Saga was more hands off it seemed the prior damage was done and why Toriyama was on some kind of autopilot while making it. So from going to overbearing editor to a near hands off editor had negative implications in my viewpoint. Still I enjoy Toriyama stuff, but I also understand he needs a balanced editor which is hard to come by.

IKR!? Ever since I first discovered the Dazenuwhachamacallit, Toriyama's interviews just downright interested yet confused me and left me somewhat disappointed. I still love this franchise, always will, but I just don't feel as strongly into it like I used to be. For that, I'm kinda glad though, otherwise, I would've never branched out to watch/read other shows and books.
Dragon Ball's weird because weird can lead to fun. At least, that's what I picked up.

I honestly really like toriyama cause i hate planning the stories i write, its just boring i like the work to flow how it wants to.
I think some last minute planing is involve. Like the Namek thing. Which was concieved 2 Arcs before it happen.
Otherwise you end up like Araki and having to write asspulls because sometimes he didn't exactly planed how the heroes were meant to defeat the enemy in the first place.
Alright, so if Krillin is an alien, then it definitely makes sense why he's stronger than all the other earthlings. It has been know throughout the series that beings with non-earth dna can become infinitely stronger than that of a human...with the exception of Roshi. It says something about Toriyama's skills when he can just fly by at the seat of his pants and create one of the most iconic series to date. Imagine if Oda did that for One piece. That would actually solidify him to be an actual God in mortal form.
I will say that by being more flexible with planning, it allows Toriyama to have freedom unlike most storytellers.

Okay. According to the game, there's a drug called Animorphaline which can turn people into beastmen. It was popular when Goku and Bulma were younger with even King Furry taking some. Eventually, the fad passed and most of the beastmen returned to normal.
Also, funny enough, #16 revealed that the Red Ribbon Army sold their own brand of Animorphaline to help get funding for their world domination plans. Their's however, was extra strength and didn't wear off. So, one side quest was helping a couple beastmen make an antidote so they could become human again.
