The overall shape of the Audiolab Omnia is very similar to my Arcam Solo Music from the early 2000s, with the rounded edges and a rather low profile. To me it just proves that the Arcam's design is timeless. I chose an all-in-one box (second-nand) for most of the reasons Paul mentioned but mostly because I had expected to be moving flats often, which would have meant less stuff to transport. I am quite satisfied with the sound quality and if I ever decide to replace the Arcam, I will most likely go for another all-in-one.

Hi Paul, great review. Why do I feel this is the kind of product that most folks watching this will be happy to recommend to their non-audiophile buddies, who are looking for a step up from Sonos and still have their old CD collection in some boxes in the spare room? Part of my affliction is the desire to build my systems and just picking a single box and a pair of speakers is never going to scratch that itch. Each to their own, of course.

Thanks for thr video I have a review and comparrsion up also vs 6000a and vs outboard dacs.
The Omnia Cd player is very good but I used the audiolab cdt-6000 also with Omnia digital inputs and I AB them against each other and I barley give the edge to the CDT 6000 timing is a smidge better rythm and pace

I love your channel, I am a subscriber and I’m considering becoming a patron (on Patreon). I’m thinking my 30-something son would welcome this unit into his home. I especially appreciate your pointing out the unit’s shortcomings (CD reader) and your analysis of the sound quality which I doubt very much if I could articulate. But I definitely relate to fatiguing vs. relaxing sound; and it doesn’t take long for me to get tired. 😴
Anyway, thanks for another quality review (content) and pleasingly pleasant professional presentation (alliteration intended). As another commented, your channel seems to be criminally under-subscribed. I originally came to it when I recognized your name and distinctive reward logo from a review published online (can’t remember the magazine/site).
I’ll offer a thought you may have heard before, but I suspect you lose a lot of viewers when you say (as you often do), “but first, I want to tell you about. . ..”. For those already subscribed, at least for me, the thought is, ‘There he goes again . . ., but we (or I) welcome it and sit back for an entertaining and informative detour; but I suspect that those who aren’t yet your subscribers go, “Here I go . . ., “ to the next channel. There are a lot of people ‘wanting to tell us things’ on TH-cam who are NOT professionals, and do NOT offer entertaining and informative detours (or context), they are just bloviating bloviators who are stealing precious time from my day, not enriching my life as you do (said the fawning flatterer).
I everyone would appreciate the content, but the phrase you use to introduce it, I think, is a problem for some. It is as if you submitted a gripping story and the editor stuck a misleading (and bland) headline on it, so people don’t stop to read your wonderful story.
Two solutions (if you consider what I’ve described is a problem), is change the phrase which introduces the content, or disguise the content by ‘sneaking it in,’ perhaps piecemeal, at other points in the presentation. Perhaps at transitions between sections (or chapters, whatever the app calls them).
Again, you can value my ‘advice’ at the price you paid for it. I did enjoy the review and I’ll be back for the next one.

Hi Paul! How come this product gets an award? The audiolab 6000a play with 6000cdt and a audioquest forest digital interlink will cost less than this wannabe Arcam solo called an Omnia.
Both components will have around the same footprint when put on each other. The 6000a as an amp looks much better and well made inside. The separate 6000cdt gives you an option to upgrade to another d/a converter in the future.
This is not for the hifi enthousiast but for people who like interior magazines.

Great review, probably the only hifi videos I can really relate to youtube, I don't agree with some of the observations and opinions but that's fine, so long as an opinion stands on merit, then that's good enough for me.
With this one I can't help but feel that audiolab have become a little confused. Yes, most people live in a world of convenience, but the audiophile seldom does.
That's to say, not everybody is into music and having decent audio equipment to listen to their music with isn't a big deal to them.
Those of us who are music lovers tend to prioritise,............. cables, floor space, plug sockets are just small problems to resolve in the pursuit of an acceptable listening experience.
I think the Omnia is pitched at a market that doesn't exist and that anybody who enjoys music would far rather have a 6000CDT, 6000A and 6000N streamer, for less then the price of the Omnia and the seperates are much more sonically superior, not to mention the longevity of a cd player, they don't last forever. Great video, always enjoy.

My pleasure, Petko. As I say in the review, separates are sonically superior but there's a host of plus points in favour of the Omnia if you fit that brief, again listed in the review. Sound remains excellent for an all-in-one. If you're into separates, I'd also invest in a separate DAC too, incidentally.

@@TheAudiophileMan ,thanks a lot. I am with the 6000a + cdt combo and I consider purchasing an external DAC. Yet I am a bit afraid as most reviewers suggest that the amp’s DAC is very good. Based on you experience, would an upgrade to a DAC at a price range of GBP 600-800 be a good upgrade to the amp’s one. I was thinking about an R2R (Denafrips Ares II for example), as my speakers are B&W 603s2 AE and the synergy might be a very little bit too analytical and slightly bright at the moment? I.e is the 6000a capable of revealing the benefits of a better external DAC?

    • @TheAudiophileMan
      @TheAudiophileMan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Absolutely, the internal DAC is very nice. I agree. Saying that, an external DAC (a good quality example, that is) is far superior to an internal model. I haven't tested the Denafrips but I hear good things about it so sure, by all means, investigate that one. Also look at Schiit who offer quality DACs around that price too. Heed also has a classy DAC for around £1k, if your budget will stretch.

I owned the 6000A and although it has a good onboard DAC, an external one, especially in your pricerange, will blow your socks off. Much better imaging, more depth in the soundstage, more detail. Btw, if you find the sound too analytical or bright, it's the pre-amp section of the 6000a. A warmer sounding DAC helps, but also a DAC wich you can use as a pre-amp.

Great review. But it's not the all-in-one unit! There is no FM radio here! When I get up in the morning first I click the radio button. I love radio, not just music from records or a music stream. I wanted to replace the old Pioneer and I bought the Cambridge Audio AXR100 with FM radio and CD player AXR35. After a week I gave it back. The CD player does not play all discs, even new ones in perfect condition (Pioneer play them), and the radio is of such poor quality that the only thing left of the set is an amplifier with Bluetooth, there is not even a USB. I thought to connect the old Pioneer to the amplifier, there would be a CD, there would be a USB (it reads even FLACK files), and a decent radio, but unfortunately, you can't connect to the amplifier because there are no outputs, because my old Pioneer is the all-in-one unit!!!

I chatted to Audiolab about your point and it replied with this, “Omnia sports a number of additions and improvements.
Enhanced DAC section based around new-generation ESS chipset - higher spec than the DAC in the 6000A/6000A Play. (You’d have to spend a lot of money on a standalone DAC to beat the one in the Omnia)
More inputs including two hi-spec USB ports - the 6000A/6000A Play have S/PDIF but not USB.
Supports hi-res PCM up to 32-bit/768kHz and DSD512 over USB (6000A and 6000A Play max out at 24/192)
      Full MQA decoding built in
      New CD transport mechanism
Enhancements to the amp circuitry (Jan Ertner never sits still!)
      4.3in colour screen
These additions and enhancements fully justify the extra £350 outlay compared to buying the 6000A Play and 6000CDT (which themselves remain great value for money)."
