Hey North Star... It's easy to see that teaching for you is not just a job but a calling... a calling that comes with a gift for teaching. Take that switchback explanation for example. You not only described it, but actually filmed at the same time. That is good teaching, and I bet that after your third graders watch this, they'll have that image so firmly entrenched in their minds that they'll know more about a switchback than some adults do.
(The teacher gets an A+ on teaching.)
Hey North Star... Love your cemetery commentary at 19:24, which is certainly true to life... or death depending on one's perspective, I guess. But that fence? I've often wondered why a cemetery has a fence around it, because the folks on the inside can't get out, and the folks on the outside don't want in.

Hey North Star... How meaningful and rich are your words, "And suddenly all your hard work is worth it," at 8:47.
Often my non-hiking friends can't understand why we hikers spend so much time on the trail, choosing the hardship and rigors of trail life. But your reflections about your "favorite moment" at 8:16 are the perfect answer and remind me what it's like to finally break out from days of hiking in the "green tunnel" and get that first glimpse of a mountain-top bald or a post-card view that's bathed in sun with wave after wave of undulating mountains as far as the eye can see.
All at once something almost therapeutic and magical happens. Suddenly, in an instant, you forget the pain of the blisters, the gnawing hunger, the brutal climb, and endless days of rain. Instantly you are transported into another dimension of experience, where the "ooh and aah" reactions to Nature's awesomeness of beauty and grandeur lead you to understand why The Great Spirit of Creation, maker of all things, stepped back from His newly created works and "saw that It was good." And in those special moments, you find that you're in full agreement.
I'm also a hiker and spending thoughtful, purposeful time in His Creation has brought me so much closer to Him. I don't hike with any type of audio, because I never tire of the songs of birds, humming of insect wings, wind blowing through trees, crackling of sticks/dry leaves from the steps of critters...it's a symphony for my ears.
God is the Ultimate Artist and we are the blessed benefactors of His Omnipotence, Omnipresence, and Omniscience.
(P.S. I'm aware that my grammar is abhorrent. Please do not pass judgment on me for this 😬)
@@ATATKDMama Good thoughts, although rarely heard, unfortunately. You may have the makings of a naturalist, as a true nature experience is best found in the absence of civilization's noise and clutter.
If Moses had been connected to some audio device, he might have sailed right by the burning bush without even noticing it. Then there would have been no face-to-face meeting with God, no Ten Commandments. Evidently, if God is going to speak to us through nature, He first has to get out attention, which is pretty hard for God to do if we're always connected to some device.
Often, I hear a fellow hiker say that he's on the trail to "get away from it all." But when I see all the electronic gadgets and audio he has, I wonder how he's going to "get away from it all" when he's "brought it all" with him.

First time to your vlog. All hail the TH-cam algorithm. To tell you the truth I clicked on your video because of the thumbnail said "barefoot hiker." He was interesting, but the rest of the video was more interesting. Your explanation of a switchback was terrific. Great views of the rain clouds, the deer, and from the peaks. Thank you for posting.

You are showing great views and giving interesting commentary. It is nice knowing what you have accomplished as you push yourself, endure and succeed. Sorry, I don’t agree with “be bold start cold”. I experienced -40 F on the Hudson. Not willing to start cold. Experienced Iceland’s wet, cold and windy weather at the Arctic Circle. Wasn’t bold there either. I used Buffalo System’s gear in Iceland and hikes at home on the east coast in zero degrees. No layers required. I stay warm, dry and comfy. Well done! Happy 400! Be well. Happy Trails!

I can't figure out how to message you so I'm leaving this comment and hoping you see it! We don't live very close to the Trail but we'll be crossing over it or staying near it a few times this summer in VA, WV and PA. We'd love to do some trail magic, but we won't have a lot of time to sit and serve hikers unfortunately. Do you have any suggestions for good things we can leave by the trail? Any other suggestions?? Side note: You are my favorite hiking channel this year! I usually prefer couples to solo hikers, but your videos are very interesting and entertaining! Thank you!! Congrats on your awesome day!!

I just found you this year while watching you give Trail Magic in NC to Take a Hike Tango Mike (we met him in the Shenandoahs while we were giving out Trail Magic). We followed Greyhound and Bailout last year, so it was really cool to see y'all interacting (waiting out the rain, no less). Sorry it took until this year to find your AT hike, but after I watch this I'll go watch your CT trail. We've been following Captain Jack this year and he just finished July 10. As a former teacher, I'm really loving your take on the trail.

About 15 years ago two sisters did a SOBO barefoot and chronicled their trek in a book. “Barefoot Sisters Southbound”. A fun read (may be an audiobook version available). Keep heading north!

In 1990, that climb up Roan Mountain was straight up. No switchbacks. You had to reach out at head level and grab onto tree roots with your hands to climb in some places.
Your videos are so entertaining! I love watching them and you are hiking so strong! You're doing great and glad that your body is feeling good. You are progressing at a good pace and not overdoing it.

My husband and our daughters attempted this in 1987 (the girls were 3 and 5). Suffice it to say we didn't get far. My husband and I came back in 2010 and we didn't get much further!

Audrey......pretty cool hitting golf balls on the trail. Good job keeping your head down and your stance looks just right, but next time try to add a little more back swing and try to follow through your swing ending with your upper body turned facing the direction of your planned ball flight. What is slack packing?
Hiking without your full pack.
As the other person commenting stated, hiking without all of your gear. You normally do this when you plan to stay at a hostel for two nights straight. They’ll include the shuttle ride in your total cost for your stay so it’s generally cheaper and more convenient than other options like hiring a shuttle driver. The benefit is your body gets some break because you are carrying less weight but you still get some miles in for the day and get real food for two days straight which also helps with your recovery from several days on the trail.
