When i think of the Yellowjackets, Russell Ferrante is the first person that comes to my mind straight away. Aside from being a fantastic musician, he is also a great composer and has written virtually most of the band's music since it's inception and some of their greatest, all due respect to the other members who have all contributed so much but i consider him to be the brains and his playing is such a large part of the overall sound that when you hear a Jackets song, you know straight away it's him and the guys. He truly is one of the finest pianists / keyboardists of all time.
you probably dont give a shit but if you are bored like me atm then you can watch pretty much all of the latest movies on InstaFlixxer. Have been watching with my girlfriend these days =)
I agree with everything that was stated. Russell is one of the finest human beings and musicians I have had the honor of befriending and working with. He certainly sets a new high benchmark for excellence that he never fails to meet and exceed. The world is a much better place because of Russell Ferrante.
I have listened countless times to that Yellow Jackets record and Russell Ferrante´s piano intro/arrangement of "Coal Miner´s Blues". It´s like Debussy but it´s jazz and twentieth century. Thanks Russell!!!
I kind of late discovered the real greatness of the Yellow Yackets this year.. especially finding the New Morning Concert here on TH-cam..... I must say, that the piano-playing of Russell Ferrante is my favorite part of the YJ-Experience.... I'v known the Yellow Jacktets for their early album with the great funky-fusion guitar by Robben Ford (Katie, Blondie, Rush Hour) .. but then I lost them. Now I enjoy even more!!
Wow!! I've got virtually all their records, signed by the group when they made one of a mere two visits to these shores. Love a whole lot of the material, but "It's Almost Gone" is still really special to me. A bit like a first love, maybe more so. The band has evolved away from that sound, but I sometimes wish they would not forget those roots...
Yes! How could I forget Wildlife. Again, the live performance on Live Wires is on a different level to the studio recorded version of The Spin. My opinion anyway. Mr Mintzer just does it right. Russell's sure composed a great number of really innovative/original sounding pieces over the years. Samurai Samba, Tortoise & Hare, Downtown and Helix from Politics, Sightseeing and Indigo from Four Corners. Seven Stars, Indian Summer and Invisible People are my other favorites from the Greenhouse record. As much as I love jazz, even bordering on being a bit of a jazz snob, I can't deny being something of a closet rocker. It's why fusion has always been my favorite genre. In Al diMeola, Frank Gambale, Carlos Rios and flamenco great, Paco de Lucia, the late great Chick Corea always had master string men in his outfits. So considering Robin Ford's departure from the Jackets always invokes those "If Only...What if..." thoughts...
The Guy is Good. He introduced Himself on 🎹s to Me via "Matinee Idol", a Classic from Yellow Jackets 1st Album back in 1981. Ever Since, He's never looked back, always researching and improving on the 🎹s, coming out with Sth., New but Original and yet He's more than just a 🎹ist.., His Philosophy, Musicality &c sets Him apace of Others. Okay 😊 listen to "Top Secrets" among Other Brilliant Tunes just to appreciate This Great Man's way out Approach to playing Music. Together with Ricky Lawson, Jimmy Haslip, Rubben Ford &c., Russell Ferrantes re-defined Jazz Fusion in Their Own Yellow Jackets' Terms. ✌️👌
Who is Russell Ferrante? Well.... He's a hero. Certainly one of mine. A genius composer and player of contemporary times. I put him up there with Chick Corea, Lyle Mays, may they rest peacefully and God bless both of them, and of course the great Pat Metheny...
Geraldine" does it for me. Bob Mintzer really took that piece to new heights on the Live Wires album.. Then "Greenhouse" is also up there. Mintzer also realised the full potential of "Freedomland" on that Live album. "Azure Moon", "Suenos" and "Sandstone" from "Like a River" are more Ferrante classics...
One of my all times favourite and most inspiring musicians!😊

I met him in a high school band room in southern Ohio. Then at the Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis. Amazing talent.
I Love Russell! One of the true greats of our generation.

He brings the happy and stunning sound to Yellowjackets.
I got to meet him last month during the Jen conference 2024!
This should be required viewing for anyone who is involved in creating and performing music. This is how it's done guys, this is how to be.
Love Ferrante’s crafty creations, Kennedy’s appropriateness, dynamics and expressionism and Haslips beautiful lines!
Out Of Town - killer composition!!!
I meet Ferrante on a concert of the YJ, super humble guy. What a concert wow.

Calminer Blues.... Dark classic. Up there with the best...

Welcome back
Where've you been?
It's Almost Gone by Russell Ferrante on their first album is my favorite Yellowjackets song.
Mine as well!
I imagine a portal closing and somebody has to sacrifice themselves and stay behind to keep it open long enough for everyone else to escape..
