    Good educational movie! Using layers is the best way to stay warm and safe on a hike. In Norway it is also strongly recommended by the Norwegian Trekking Association to use the layering system. So I hope people will watch and follow your good advice! Two comments from my own experiences in Norway. If possible the outer layer should be in high visibility colors (red, orange etc). Makes it a lot easier to be seen - and usually you want to be found by the rescue team:) Secondly - In Norway we have something called mesh underwear that we often use as the first layer. It is usually made of wool, but can be synthetic as well. It is shirts or long johns with a mesh design - it looks weird, but the design gives good flexibility both for wicking away moisture or keeping warm. It used by the Army, Police, rescue teams and hikers. If you ever come across it you should try it and compare it with your normal base layer - chances are high that you will continue to use it. Ok, enough publicity for Norwegian clothing brands:)

      Great recommendation on the mesh base layer. I personally use Superthermo from Brynje, which is a synthetic mesh base layer. Keeps you dry, and regulates the temperature when out and about. Did you know that Tensing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary were wearing mesh base layer from a Brynje when they climbed Everest. Just saying 🏔😉🇳🇴

      @@p.richter9592 Thanks for your comment. I use Superthermo from Brynje when I run in the cold season (8 months of the year:) and the quality is very good. I have one shirt I have used for running for 15 years and it is still in good condition even after having being washed 100s of times. But for hikes in the wild I use the wool products from Aclima as they work better for a prolonged period of time. And I have heard the story about Brynje being used on Everest; I think that was a good choice:)

    As Les Stroud says: “you sweat, you die”! I’m a big fan of Gore Tex trousers that have ventilation zippers on the sides.

    Another good video. Couple of points though. I think you're using too many layers, I use just three proper layers, easier to manage. Gaiters are always a must anytime on the mountains! Also why would anyone wear gaiters over waterproof trousers!?! Anyway great as always to watch such videos, it helps a lot.

      @@p.richter9592 considering I just Tore my gaiters the other day this sentiment got even stronger in me. Also, if you really need hardshell pants you're usually either iceclimbing in too warm a weather for ice climbing or you just shouldn't even be on the mountain at that moment.

    Hi
    I asked about Buffalo in your rucksack video. Forgive me for repeating the question here.
    Can you advise about Buffalo eg the special 6. Could it reduce the number of layers required? It allows one to remain warm even if damp???

    • @norman6595
      @norman6595 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I used buffalo for years when in the Army. In my experience they were very useful when stopped/standing around etc but not when moving at pace, uphill, carrying load etc. Also quite heavy and bulky to carry as a ‘stop top’ or emergency layer when compared with some of the modern synthetic options.

    With Paramo waterproof jackets in winter would you wear fewer layers? Secondly what about wearing a windproof rather than a hard shell when it is not raining?

      Hi, yes Mountain Equipment provide all the team clothing that we use as "uniform" and it is good kit. Mountain Rescue England and Wales (MREW) also provided us with a Paramo jacket we use in summer. Aside from "uniform" team members use a variety of manufacturers kit to meet their needs. @@niallcartwright1107 The team raises funds from the General Public for the kit we use so each team member is issued with sufficient kit to keep them safe on the hills in all weathers. Members provide their own boots and base layer.
