I spent a year there from October 1976 to October 1977 as a cook during my final year in the Guard. Pretty cool coming across this video. I remember an electrician showing three of us how you could walk up to the base with a three foot fluorescent light bulb and it would light up as he walked nearer. It was spooky and probably not a healthy thing to do. Then there was the guy who came out to climb the tower to change light bulbs and inspect it. He was one of a kind. He asked that I pack him a lunch to eat up there as he would be on the tower most of the day. It takes a while to climb a 1,400 foot tower and change bulbs. Never did ask if he peed off the tower while up there for hours. Was it cold there? The first week of March saw 110 to 114 below zero for the whole week on the old wind chill charts. The air temp was forty-five to fifty-five below with steady wind around fifty-five mph. there were no outside walks that week!
I was stationed there from May, 1976 to April, 1977: "The Cold War", post Vietnam... you had to walk a few miles, but you could hear TASS & Radio Moscow beyond our pulse on a decent radio. Everything was flown in, except the (diesel) fuel tankers coming in late July 76 (I remember they missed the Coast Guard Day BBQ Aug 5th). 39, yes THIRTY-NINE years of service in that chunk of metal & cables, better than I even expected.
@PlanetaryTV WOW you must have been there at or nearly the same time I was. I got sent there right out of boot camp as well. It was a really cool station hell we probably served with the same people!

Being in tower work, I always hate to see a beautiful tower fall.
Flew many resupply missions in there, Kodiak 130 Nav 2008-2014.
Thats sad. Always hate to see a good tower go down.
I also think it's a mistake trashing the LORAN system.
GPS is too vulnerable.
Amen. Dumb as hell.
Pretty amazing! Interesting that it can stand so long against all weather conditions, yet it takes so little to bring it down in seconds.
Best angle, I think begins ~2:00. That piece coming toward the camera gave me the willies.
Where can I get a job filming stuff that gets blown up?
That would have made one hell of a 600 meter antenna.
