How the Favelas shaped Samba and Carnival in Brazil

  • In the city of Rio De Janeiro, around 23-24% of the population live in the Favelas and within these makeshift neighbourhoods, is where the origins of Samba lies. Despite the dangerous environment it somehow gave the country of Brazil it’s most recognisable sound and shaped the biggest carnival in the world.

Hey guys thanks for checking out this latest episode!
Just a quick note, I majorly screwed up the Rio Population count, as of 2020 it stands at 6,636,673 not 1,500,000 🤦🏼‍♂️
However, the point still stands that the percentage of people living in the Favelas is still overwhelming.

I don't usually see videos about the place where I live, but this time I clicked because you were talking about samba, and I simply can't resist samba.
I really liked your brief explanation about the favelas history, it really matches with the stories that I heard when I was a little child and later at school. My grandma arrived in Rocinha when it was just a few hundred residents, and watched it's growth to a 70K people neighbourhood. And living in Rocinha, samba was always part of life, the Samba School was more than a place to listen to music and seeing the ones you loved, it still is a place of charity. It's normal to hosts events in which you can buy a delicious Feijoada (a local food) for really low prices ($1~$2 USD), with that they could feed those who don't have enough to afford food.

The first samba school of Rio de Janeiro was not Estação Primeira de Mangueira, but instead it was Deixa Falar (which can roughly be translated as "Let Them Speak" or even "Let Them Gossip"), whose headquarters were at Morro do Estácio, very close to where the Sambadrome was built decades later. In fact, Portela is the oldest one, once it was founded back in 1923, although it was originally not a samba school, but a "bloco", that is, a social gathering for block parties; its original name was quite different (Vai Como Pode = It Goes As Far As It Can). Greetings from Brazil!

The musical characteristics is a bit restricted to the samba you'd find played by baterias, specially at samba schools, and it is important to keep in mind that it is a single subgenre of the larger style that is samba. You can hardly call all sambas up tempo if you take in consideration stuff like samba-canção or even just the slower sambas, among which many of the most famous pieces of the genre are to be found .

I believe you touched an important surface of samba in Rio, but I would be careful of using words like “always in major” or “origin”, as that is quite missleading. If you want to dig a little deeper and find the origins of samba you should look into Bahia, not in Rio. Yes, it is mostly seen as a musical expression of urban Rio de Janeiro, but the Bahian samba de roda (dance circle) is the main root of the sambas in Rio. If I remember correctly you can trace it back to the 17th century. Also, like I mentioned, saying that it’s only in major is just wrong. Yes, maybe in the more modern and “developed” samba it is, as it is more for carnival and let’s say fun, but like any genre, samba also has songs with minor harmonies and I would not put it nor to major, nor to minor - it is very diverse and has quite complex harmonies. Safe travels man!

    • @Melgazar9
      @Melgazar9 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Glad you shared this! Samba is most definitely not "always in major" - it is music that organically grew from African culture within Brazil, primarily Bahia and Rio to my knowledge.

Your use of the word “migrants” is erroneous at best.... it’s very offensive and extremely inappropriate to use in this context...
They were not “migrants”..... they were descendants of people who were stolen from their land and held hostage, brutalized and forced to work for free to generate profit for the Portuguese .... they were descendants of slaves....
The word “migrant” is abhorrent as it completely disregards the realities of what actually happened...
You also neglected to mention race outside of the origin of same from African descendants... the favelas are overwhelmingly black people and the talking about class and socioeconómica without even mentioning the racial divide comes across as disingenuous...
Anyways.... The video itself was well done and overall informative, but it’s a bit cringey and hard to ignore the omissions of certain details, as someone who is fully aware of the history of Brazil , and its historic and current racial transgressions.
Example of “whitesplaining”... it may have been unintentional but it’s very problematic, because you as a content creator have to consider that for a lot of people who view your videos... this could potentially be their only reference point to understanding Brazil and its history.

    • @mohammedhadi7001

      Hi,
Whilst I understand your point, but didn't he mention that "2 million slaves arrived at the port..."? Yes, after that he did mention them as migrants, but in my opinion, isn't is disrespectful to refer to the victims of such a heinous crime as "slaves", especially when he already mentioned earlier about the slaves arriving in Brazil?
I would also like to mention that I am asking this out of curiosity and not to defend the author. I would like to see your reasoning as to why merely mentioning the sentence "2 million slaves arrived at the port..." wasn't good enough.
