I'm relieved that Mr Dalrymple in this interview comes across as possessing equanimity and constructive comment. Years ago, I remember gasping at his unrestrained pessimism week after week in his column in The Spectator (I was thinking that he must be paid to be so). Maybe, living in the midst of the French language, he cannot avoid a certain visceral joy- whatever the subject being discussed?
@@ajs41 I always admired his column- reading from Australia- but marvelled at level of self deprecation in England (compared with hyper defensiveness in my former country)
A very interesting video, I agree thereapy does not really work, neither does medication, therapy in someways makes me more depressed. yes I am emotionally unstable, and unstable in mind in general.
Dalrymple says "I don't think this kind of historical blame is useful." Although I think he is one of the most important modern intellectuals alive today, I think he has this completely wrong. Understanding First Causes, Root Causes & historical antecedents to contemporary problems is NOT merely an exercise in "historical blame". As the Santayana quote posted in front of Auschwitz attests: Those who forget the past are bound to repeat it. The warning is not only to remember, but also to UNDERSTAND. When Dalrymple misguidedly deflects this line of questioning by calling it "historical blame", he stops what is actually a crucially important attempt to understand the complex origins of how & why we have descended into the contemporary problems we face.
It's entirely proper to understand history, there is much to be learned by doing so. It's also entirely proper and possible to understand it whilst avoiding seeking blame by looking through present day views. We have to see history as a thing of it's time. The UK is in large part where it is today entirely because it looks to find a 'whipping boy' for everything it dislikes in life, rather than see the truth behind it's maladies and to then take responsibility for them.
He's married to a French doctor. That's why he lives in France a lot of the time. The rest of the time he lives in Bridgnorth which is near where I live in England.
When governments encourage fatherless families sadly this is the outcome. Also, previous and subsequent governments and privatised all our utilities therefore everyone seems to pass the buck rather than take responsibility, thus no pride! Similarly, our governments have encouraged the demise of our once beautiful and great country by encouraging every foreigner to come to these shores, bringing with them their own culture, religion and indeed their mother country ideologies and wanting to change the UK to suit their cultural needs. Many not contributing anything to the taxation system instead take rather than give……. The end of Rome…… sad times.
The society has, for the most part, lost its reverence for God and his precepts….It’s as simple as that, but they will point the finger everywhere else except that. To blame anything else is to look at the symptoms and not the disease.
Incontinentaly emotional 😆😆😆 But, I would ask: isn’t the reluctance of police to do anything these days is the result of “defunding the police” and criticizing the police, like they have been doing in North America, rather than holding them in esteem ? Has this been 're-posted' from an earlier listing? I seem to have seen it months/year ago. Does this happen much with stuff on Y T , anyone? This occurs to me frequently, that I seem to have seen it yonks ago and here it is Y T saying that it is only 1 month old !
Yes indeed. I had my garden vandalised by the freeholder. The police don't give a monkey's.
They are scared of the monkeys.
What does Hitchens think would have happened if the American GI's had not come to Britain during WWII? Perhaps all the Gaullist could have gone back behind their Maginot Line and defeated Hitler.
‘The ping pong table theory of wickedness’. He is 100 per cent correct. He has stared wickedness in the face and so have I.
People should stop crying over change of society ,it will take place one way or the other.
there are barely any English people left in the UK. London is not English anymore.
@@ravenhill_of_midsummer_1968Up North which increases house prices , food everything up here
Funny, same issues in every western country. Funny.
Many decent people feel the same 😢
It’s interesting to note that in the Western world many people “suffer from depression “ and must take medication. Had they been born in a poor country whereby putting food on the table was at the forefront of their daily routine perhaps depression would be less of an issue.
Alas, the spoilt westerner syndrome!
He has a hard time saying,' in France the illegal migrants are kept apart. "
Remember this all started under Cameron may Johnson sunik conservative progressive woke government s.......so i have to hold my nose at the next election to vote conservative...not a happy person
He said his life is perfectly reasonable but everything is doom and gloom for everyone else. People everywhere love to complain. I think it’s BS.
Theo's in France lamenting the state of England, I remember growing up with him on the council estate..😂
As someone whose family were miners he has no idea of what he’s talking about working conditions and health care.
He's always been optimistic despite writing about pessimistic things. That's what I like about him.
@@ajs41 I always admired his column- reading from Australia- but marvelled at level of self deprecation in England (compared with hyper defensiveness in my former country)
I will invest in ping pong tables as I know they will never learn :-)
My comment was about how slave wages are being imposed has the effect of cancelling of competency.
A very interesting video, I agree thereapy does not really work, neither does medication, therapy in someways makes me more depressed. yes I am emotionally unstable, and unstable in mind in general.
People in Australia get charged then let out because the jails are full.
All true..
Brilliant story about the police.
This needs to be resurrected -
What is the exact name of the book Dr. Dalrymple is referring to (cannot find Sands Everything).
When reading the Riot Act in Oxford Street remember to end with 'God Save the King' otherwise it won't be valid.
As he speaks from his Mediterranean idyll. I do agree with him, he is speaking the obvious.
The poorer citizen's do NOT have a " perfectly reasonable life"!
The society has, for the most part, lost its reverence for God and his precepts….It’s as simple as that, but they will point the finger everywhere else except that. To blame anything else is to look at the symptoms and not the disease.
Incontinentaly emotional 😆😆😆
But, I would ask: isn’t the reluctance of police to do anything these days is the result of “defunding the police” and criticizing the police, like they have been doing in North America, rather than holding them in esteem ? The guest’s comments regarding the failure of courts to convict are true here inCanada as well.

Yes all they want is to give medication...it's easy for them....maybe they make money from that.....but they don't care about about your problems
Or care about them...my psychologist looked at his watch and kept yawning from Kaiser
Needless to say I took care of it myself
