Wow! Thought i was the only one who was drawn to these books! Im blind so a lot of the good ones arent available in braille. I did find winter garden and the nightengale and loved them though! Just found orphans tale on audible and im dying to get it even if it is over 20 bucks!! Used my last credit already! Then i find your channel and my wish list is loaded!!

Salt to the Sea is my absolute favorite book!! Between Shades of Grey and Fountains of Silence (both by Ruta Sepetys) are also super good and so well researched!
I know this video is 4 years old. But I'm getting into WWII fiction.

If you haven't read it yet. The Winemakera Wife by Kristin Harmel was really good.
Hi!! I see the book on top is "the boy in the striped pajamas". That's on my list TBR!! I love WWII books. I recently finished The Light Over London. Very good, same era. The book thief sounds great. Kristin Hannah is great, I want to read The Nightingale a s well. The Storyteller is AMAZING.
Salt to the sea is such an amazing book. Ruta Sepetys was able to create such a beautiful story. I’m currently reading between shades of grey which is another by ww2 book also by Ruta Sepetys and I have to say both salt to the sea and between shades of grey will not disappoint. Highly recommend

Winter of the World is an amazing book set in WW2. It is the second book in a trilogy by Ken Follett. Fall of Giants is the 1st set in WW1. They are all huge books but if that doesnt scare you, definitely highly recommend.
I've been hearing about those books a lot lately. I will need to start looking for them.
They are great. they do have alot of politics in them but I think the author does a good job of weaving the characters lives into it and you can really see how the war effected all the characters.
Ken Follett is an incredible storyteller. Check out any of his books and you will be addicted im sure. Histotical fiction set in all kinds of turbulent historical times. Such a great writer.
The Nightingale is in my top 10 favorite books in the last decade! I absolutely loved it!

I love historical fiction books. My favourite type are books set in the present that go to the past. I have the storyteller by Jodi Picoult her books are always so thought provoking and cause me to have some internal debates. My favourite and heart wrenching Picoult book is Nineteen minutes, I’m doing a review on it for one of my next videos. I have the storyteller and will definitely have to read it! Thanks for the insight on the books I’ll have to check them out.

I also love WW2! I have read all of these and my favorite was the Nightingale, just wow. I also wasn’t that impressed with All the light we cannot see, worth the read but I have read better. A fantastic memoir to pick up is Until we meet again By: Michael Korenblit. Ken Follett also has some good ones. I’m also obsessed with Historical Russia, so so fascinating!
From your list, I've read The Book Thief, Secrets of a Charmed Life and Winter Garden - loved all of these and rated them 4 or 5 stars. All the Light You Cannot See -I think I felt about that one the same as you. I really thought I would love it but it was just OK for me. The Nightingale, The Women in the Castle and Salt to the Sea are all on my TBR.
Some others I might suggest are Code Name Verity (one of my all time favorites - get the audiobook if possible) and also Rose Under Fire, both by Elizabeth Wein. If you haven't yet read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, I really liked that one. I don't read much non-fiction but Unbroken: A WWII Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption was just amazing. And one you may not have heard of is The Silence of Trees - this is a dual timeline story of an old Ukranian woman in present day Chicago and also of her experiences during WWII in the Ukraine.
I would also mention The Girl You Left Behind by Jojo Moyes. This actually takes place in France during WWI. I didn't realize that Germany also occupied France during WWI. That's the setting for this book and it's quite good.
The Nightingale is set in France during the German occupation. You will LOVE that book! I just picked up Unbroken and I totally forgot to include The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society in my list. I have a hold on Code Name Verity at the library so hopefully I get to that one soon. Sounds like I need to get The Silence of Trees. :) I have a feeling you and I could spend a lot of time chatting about WWII books.
I also read the lost some years ago. This is Real life indeed ! So interesting and moving book. I still remember it now, very emotional too !
The Book Thief…love, love this book. Must read again. The Nightingale…Wow. I recommend both of these to everyone. Please check out, Those Who Save Us, Jenna Blum.

Now the nightingale : i read it. Well i am French, have already read a lot on this subject because i am so interested by this period of time. I must say that the first part is quite as expected. No surprise and i have not learned anything new. Now in the second part where things get much more difficult for both girls, then it comes to a very interesting pace and it turns very interesting especially when each of them has to make very difficult choices. And i could say that this second part of the book is very well written ! I will finish by saying that it is an ideal book for someone Who does not know much about Ww2.
I love WWII fiction too. You should try Beneath a Scarlett Sky.

Salt to the sea is fantastic. Also - check out Ken Follett! His "Kingsbridge" and "The Century Trilogy" books are soooo good and so informative and well researched!
I 100% agree. He is my favorite author. He writes very clear, and characters are very likable and real.
Reading "The Lost" right now, great sad book.
Peter T. "P.T." Deutermann covers the WWII Pacific Campaign in Historical Fiction better than anyone I've come across so far. I recommend "The Nugget" for anyone wanting to break into his books, which are all fairly good. These books are heavy on the historical aspects of the war with a sharp focus on the action and turning points in Naval battles but lighter on the drama though, if that's what you're going for you may not be interested but I'm from a Navy city with a rich history of supporting the war effort in the Pacific and it has been rewarding for me to find this treasure trove of historical fiction covering the lesser celebrated war theater in the Pacific

I read a ton of Historic WWII. I wasn't able to get into "The Lost." One that you don't hear much about, but is really good is "Born Survivors"

All The Light We Cannot See was my favorite of all of them. Better than the Book Thief even. It was a close race, though ;) You gave me some new ideas, though. I have been on WW2 kick for 6 months or more. If you haven't read The War that Saved my Life, I would highly recommend. YA but wonderful. Subscribing.

Isabela D If you enjoyed Salt to the Sea you should read Between Shades of Gray. It is also by Ruta Sepetys and follows Joanna’s cousin through the Baltic genocide performed by Russia during WW2. Amazing book!

I did read Sarah's Key - totally forgot about that one. I'm glad I'm not alone with my obsession.
Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan. Takes place in Italy during WW II. It is about a 17 year old boy who was a hero during the war and is a true story. Such an amazing story!

I would ditch the Picoult. She just paraphrased the much better book on the same subject 'The Kindly Ones' by Jonathan Littell.

Hey Lindsey! I have two fantastic WWII historical fiction books you may enjoy reading. One is called "Max" by Sarah Cohen-Scali and it is about a boy named Max who is born indoctrinated in Nazi Ideology. He was born in the Lebensborn program which is about having perfect Aryan children. It is quite a dark book but he has all these ideas and thinks of himself as the perfect specimen but then he meets an older polish boy named Lukas who is placed in another program with him based on his blue eyed and blonde haired looks. Lukas is actually jewish and its about there brotherhood and the whole ideology and revenge. The other one is The Earth is Singing by Vanessa Curtis and it is about a Jewish girl named Hannah who lives in soviet Latvia and it is beautiful and heartbreaking as she has all this going for her she has a boyfriend her mother and grandmother who think that ignoring the germans will help them and it is about the bonds and how they try to escape and a mother and daughters love for one another and betrayal it was a beautiful tear jerker I highly recommend

Reading about ww2 experience in countries of eastern europe is so different to those in Germany etc
Their experiences were horrific in an entirely different way- Imagine being trapped between Hitler and Stalin...
I just finished the Nightingale by Kristen Hannah and it was great. You should read the bronze horseman trilogy about Russia during WW 11

I love WW2 I have your answer about how he “convinced them” it is like North Korea rn he used fear and people did actually believe him mainly the kids cause they didn’t know life out of the nazi rule so they believed it
Hitler's ability to convince people to join his cause is a lot more complicated than that. Hitler was an individual that was a psychopath or a sociopath that is very charismatic. His ability to sweep into a leading position was due to a lot of factors, most of them stemming from Germany's defeat in the First World War. Many people, most of them adults and not children, followed him. Many of the high ranking Nazis were adults with only a few that rose in rank as older teenagers. I think that the youngest high ranking Nazi had been a seventeen or eighteen year old, probably one of the Hitler Youth... That were put into training camps to be soldiers by their parents, who were adults.
Hitler did a lot more than terrify people into submission. Your assumption that he targeted just children is wrong when you consider that most of his supporters were adult men and women that were willing to do anything to please a man that would take Germany out of its misery. There's a lot more to this than fear tactics. The fact that you say this but fail to mention any other aspects is rather telling that your only interaction with The Second World War and the Holocaust is through fiction novels that are often heavily romanticized and are usually poorly researched.
