  • This is an incomplete recording. We are currently trying to source a newer generation tape, that contains the entire movie.

Wow! I am so happy I found this! Mr. Kershey was my favorite teacher. I love Coatesville history. I am in awe even at 40 years old and one of his students.

Mr. Kershey gave a wonderful presentation:)! I personally love history, but that love came from my Elementary School trips in Kindergarten and from my Childhood visits to historical sites, not in the class room because my teachers would rattle off dates with no passion for history and most of my history teachers failed to tell detailed stories like Mr. Kershey. Although, I am not from Coatsville My Mom is from Coatsville. My Mom was in Mr. Kershey's homeroom class at Scott High School in the 10th grade. My Mom graduated Scott High School in 1961. My Late Grandfather was the Secretary of the School Board in 1952 and he was a Supervisor at Lukens Steel Company. I have many fond memories of my Late Grandparents and I remember my Late Grandfather would talk about Buffalo Bill and Anne Oakley in relationship to Chester County. However, Mr. Kershey has taught me things I did not know, like the underground railroad trails, the outlaw that stayed at the Wild Cat named "Sandy Flash" or James Fitzgerald, and that Washington stayed with Moes Coats. I wish that Mr. Kershey had been my history teacher. I would like it if the rest of Mr. Kershey's presentation could be shown on the Coatsville Archive.

I wanted to apologize, with great embarrassment, I misspelled Coatesvile without the "e". Again, Since I love history and my Mom is from Coastesville, I would really enjoy more historical lectures from Mr. Kershey.

Mr. Kershey. The reason why I love history. I was blessed to have him as my American History teacher when I was a junior in high school.

Great video. Mr. Kershey was my mom's teacher and my uncle's basketball coach. He gave a great presentation and it has made me want to learn more about Coatesville the place I was born.

Mr. Kershey was a wonderful teacher. I always loved history class but his was the best. My cousin, Jack Whoric, graduated with Mr. Kershey from Dunbar Township in Dunbar, Pa. My mother also graduated from Dunbar in 1936. Even though I was born in Charleroi, Pa. I went to school in Coatesville from 1961-67. He was my 11th grade history teacher and the best teacher I ever had.

Wow! What a great video and presentation by Ross Kershey! Never knew all these things about Coatesville. I grew up on the outskirts and went to high school there.

I lived behind Scott School on Striling St. from 1981-2006 and loved going up in the 80’s in Coatesville!

Very interesting, as I was raised in Coatesville, graduated from Scott in 1966. One thing, when Mr Kershey refers to a view of smokestacks for Luken's blast furnaces from South Hill he is in error. The smokestacks are from open hearth furnaces. My father was a First Helper in the Open Hearth for over 30 years until all operations were moved to the electric melt shop off 1st Ave. (forget the year).

He said the oldest house in Coatesville was built in 1716. Then he said the house was 284 years old. So my guess is sometime in the year 2000.
