    Can't dance to it. Won't be on the bar's background music to cheer people up. Won't be a on a wedding singer's repertoire or anybody's workout playlist. A song for those with a soul. A song that on first hearing, I pulled over to listen on the car radio to hear Dusty's cover. Bless you Randy - Bless you Dusty. There was music with magic - intentional or not.

    What I love about Randy Newman is that he arranges his own songs and by that I mean he writes out the musical notes of the score/arrangement. .....there aren't many singer-songwriters who do this and that makes him unique.

    • @scootermom1791
      @scootermom1791 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is incredible! I didn't know that. I do, however, know how painfully difficult it is to manually write out each note one at a time for each instrument. It's challenging to say the least. I admire this composer and song writer for being able to do this. 🙂

    I first heard this song on Judy Collins's album "In My Life". Then, as now, I get teary-eyed when I hear it. It is filled with lines I can still play in my head 55 years later. "tin can at my feet, think I'll kick it down the street, that's a way to treat a friend." Give Judy's version a try, it is so fine.

    • @Dr3amtime
      @Dr3amtime 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We had Judy's album in the house as I was growing up. In the mid-70s, when I was old enough to want to start collecting my own records, my Mom got me a copy of Randy's live album, which had this song on it, along with Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger. Both remain among my favorites.

    • @scootermom1791

      I have listened to this song probably more than a hundred times because I had the sound track from "Beaches." I love that movie and love the music. Bette Midler sings this song with such heartfelt passion. Her voice even cracks at the end because she was starting to cry - for real - when she performed it in that scene in the movie. I'm glad they didn't edit that out; it shows the humanness of a an extraordinary singer and actress.

      No one understands the nuances of a song like the person that wrote it. Many times songwriters are not also performers. Randy Newman is a performer, and a craftsman in his field and a brilliant interpreter of his own work. An artist of the first order and it's a shame (and an embarrassment, among an untold number, for the R&R Hall of Fame) that it took them 20 years to come to that realization.
