Once again, kudos to Randy Newman, for being one of the greatest song writers of our time. There are several GREAT versions of this song, including Judy Collins, Gabriel, this one, and several others. But someone has to WRITE this great a song.

What to say? I very much like Newman's version for its profound sadness, but I might like this one better. This live version seems to be dragging and speeding up, like putting emphasis on specific words or tones. The slight changes it causes, combined with Norah's voice, are extremely beautiful to me.

Such a beautiful song - I don't think anyone could do it any injustice. Ironically I prefer everybody else's version to that of it's composer Randy Newman.
That's because you can't tell genius when you hear it. Randy's simplistic delivery and ironic tone is what makes the song, especially seeing as the song is a satire towards itself. It is merely a contradiction of humans. Too many covers of the song try to beautify it or over do it.
Or it could just be that Randy's genius is recognisable only when it chanelled through the voice of another ! Furthermore, I think a good song is like a good timepiece - there is no need to dismantle it to be able to appreciate it.
I'm tempted to say only Randy should sing Randy. But today - rainy - I was blown away by both Peter Gabriel's super-subdued and Tom Odell's versions. Truly.
Good cover, and some nice paraphrasing of the piano lines. I'm a fan of Newman's vocals too, but not sure I hear this one as particularly ironic. That said, Dusty Springfield's version's probably my fave.
