Randy gets panned for some of the sillier settings, but you only need to spend like 15 minutes listening to his stuff to realize how incredible he is. The man is a freaking institution.
You're right. I used to think he was a silly hack. But I was wrong. He really is among the great American singer song writers. I'd like to go on, but there's nothing I could say that would do justice.
I don't think there's any song that can bring me to tears as quickly as this one. The simplicity and nostalgia of the music mixed with the really direct sadness in the lyrics, it's just killer.
@@KlaviersAnthology ...I think you will agree that Randy Newman penned many emotionally touching songs. When I'm Gone is, as you point out, one of his best. But there are quite a number of others that I find just as powerful.
Randy knows more about longing, pain, sadness and how to turn it into music than any musician ever born. Not only musically but lyrically also. I can't count the number of his pieces that elicit tears within the first bar of music. Not to ignore his way with a lyric either...... A treasure, for sure.
The chord choice after he says "losing you" in the second half of the song is beautiful and pretty brilliant IMO. Up until that point the song is melancholy but that chord just pushes it over the cliff into true grief.
Dear Randy you are my all time favorite singer/song writer. Once after a great amazing concert in New York City, I told you that we were both born Jewish in 1943 to which you responded "And therefore we will never feel at home in this world,." That was your exact response and it has stayed with ne ever since, I love your work!
I had the blessing of meeting him many years back (in Tulsa, during a super cold streak too!). I told him "Miss You" could be another "Feels like home: (a WAY underrated love song). He said the "up there in Idaho" line would get in the way - I said leave it out. Anyway, he was most gracious and an unforgettable time in my life. "Thank you eternally Randy".
"Losing You" Was a fool with my money And I lost every dime And the sun stopped shining And it rained all the time It did set me back some But I made it through But I'll never get over losing you Do you know how much you mean to me? Should've told you 'cause it's true I'd get over losing anything But I'll never get over losing you When you're young And there's time To forget the past You don't think that you will But you do But I know that I don't have time enough And I'll never get over losing you I've been cold I've been hungry But not for awhile I guess most of my dreams have come true With it all here around me No peace do I find 'Cause I'll never get over losing you No, I'll never get over losing you
@@jasonfrost2487 ...check out Randy Newman's "Wandering Boy" from his Dark Matter cd. Powerful and poignant. But yes, "Losing You" is indeed powerful. Honestly, so many Randy Newman songs fit that description. He is an a class by himself.
Perfectly complex and simple at the same time. I'm not sure songs like this even come from planet earth. I think they're channeled from space. Randy Newman has a satellite dish in his head.
I'd never considered that before, that as you get old you don't have time to get right with the things that've happened to you any more (And the older you get the more ppl get sick and die around you) - A great clear idea for a song made with a depth of Human understanding that only the many years alive on Earth can give. Fantastic song / songwriter.
What a heartbreaking story. The idea of not 'having time' to get over something is very unique and strong. Most of us who've dealt with losing a child, a parent, or even a a close friend, can relate to the idea of never getting over it. I met Randy many years ago, at a show near Santa Barbara. Sweet man. Humble man. I told him how much his music had cause me to think about so many things we take for granted in life. Not too many songwriters can put it in a song like him. He's priceless.
Mr. Newman played this one tonight in Austin, and I cried halfway into the next song, I Love To See You Smile. Randy Newman is the only artist I love. I love the work of many artists, but as a person, I love only Randy Newman.
Damn it! I thought I'd cried my last tear for this gal who let me go, said she had to because she loved me too much and I didn't love her enough and life was short. Now I know after listening to this song that is true more than any time in my life. Thanks Randy for wrenching my gut and pulling out every last tear...I hope.
He is a genius and master of cutting thru human behavior and emotions in a song...he's the best ever...you can find lines from many of his songs to use in life over an over to express what is really going on...and help you explain why it happens...its aint always pretty but it is truth and just a little truth can make all the difference...in being able to find your smile and keep on...and his chord changes are genius....his piano playing 'jedi'...amazing man, wit and musician
This brings me to tears cos my brother lost his yongest son and he s trying to get over it but never will. Randy touches something deep in my heart and mind which is a WHOLE LOT with his singing and playing and words all together
Man, the tears welled up with this song. There are times you just don't want to cry anymore. Don't touch the side of the tent when its raining. Don't listen to Randy when you can't bear to cry.
One of the best story tellers around. Brilliant musician. Duh.. There are few songwriters and performers who can make me cry the way Randy Newman has for many years now. What a treasure.
My husband died June 5th 2015 and this song expresses that feeling of loss. I think you never get "over it" the real job is ACCEPTING the loss--is that even possible?

Rand has so many songs like this... none better than the others; one good example is "Everytime It Rains." Randy, you're on my bucket list - and I, too, am running out of time. Love you.
His clever and perceptive words (sometimes mocking, always heartfelt), his glorious tunes and the depth of Mr. Newman's singing style touches me like no other. Every time I hear this songs my tears pour. I have lost 2 children. People don't know what to say ,so, they dessert you. "Losing You"
Was a fool with my money
And I lost every dime
And the sun stopped shining
And it rained all the time
It did set me back some
But I made it through
But I'll never get over losing you
Do you know how much you mean to me?
Should've told you 'cause it's true
I'd get over losing anything
But I'll never get over losing you
When you're young
And there's time
To forget the past
You don't think that you will
But you do
But I know that I don't have time enough
And I'll never get over losing you
I've been cold
I've been hungry
But not for awhile
I guess most of my dreams have come true
With it all here around me
No peace do I find
'Cause I'll never get over losing you
No, I'll never get over losing you
These lyrics are as powerful as any I've ever experienced.
