    These kind of videos with a person that is learning are the best. Good idea. Even I think that Cath began with too much level.

    Seems like a lot of people get the down and back with straight arms BUT, what I see(as a beginner) is they FOLD at the waist, keeping weight on chest which keeps their weight forward. They think they are back, but only their bum is back...weight is still forward. which is why the front wheel doesnt come up to the balance point. It helps to see other beginners, so I can see where I need improvement. Thanks for the vid. 👍

    It was helpful to see a person in your video apply the suggestion. It shows how you can correct and improve the manual. The video and watching it slow motion makes it clear what you are doing and what you need to adjust. I have been manualing with a manual machine. I need to progress to the trails and hopefully I can apply these tips. Appreciate the tips.

    hip height is a bit of an annoyance when you don't want to pull over to switch between pedaling and non pedaling seat heights and there's no remote dropper

    Great vid, Em! I need to practice these more. Just wanted to ask what bars you're running? I'm looking for some bars with more rise and they look the ticket.

    • @EmilyHorridge
      @EmilyHorridge  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you liked it! Yes they are Reverse, not sure of model but 35mm rise and cut to 750mm. Definitely helps for manuals and for steep descents 😁👌

    my biggest issue is that I end up turning my bars and falling to the side. Speed isn't my issue, but I have very skinny handlebars (~600mm). Any ideas?

    • @EmilyHorridge
      @EmilyHorridge  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think I've ever had 600mm bars (even in the 90s), but that might not be helping! I'd suggest setting your phone up on slow mo (riding directly towards it, and then another filmed from side on) so you can check what you're doing, and the things I'd pay attention to are looking at whether you're looking ahead, are you evenly balanced side to side, if you're pushing through your feet evenly, are you extending the arms forward, stuff like that. It's hard to say without looking at what you're doing. It might be useful to think of your arms as just pieces of string that attach your torso to the handlebars. Arms are just connectors to the part of the body that's doing the big weight transfer which is actually what initiates the front wheel lift.

    Newbie question, but assume it is better to practice with the suspension turned off? Or is ON better?

    • @EmilyHorridge
      @EmilyHorridge  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say to practice with it open (on). Simply because when you're riding a trail where you might want to lift the front wheel over something, the chances are you're going to have your suspension open rather than locked/off, so it makes sense to practice with the suspension set the same as the scenario that you'd use the skill in. Hope that makes sense... I also think it possibly helps a little as the shock compresses 😉

    Hi it is me again just to say:
    I got a nice short manual just to pass over whatever 🤖
    But I can´t get to give a second pedal stroke

    • @EmilyHorridge
      @EmilyHorridge  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Manuals don't involve pedaling, just good balance and a bit of momentum to keep you on the back wheel. It takes a lot of practice, Months and months if you are dedicated. Wheelies are where you pedal whilst on the back wheel, but I haven't made a video about that yet.

    What I see that's not there is maintaining control over her balance point by being at the center the pivot point, pulling your butt over the rear wheel is not right; pull with your hips centered in the middle of the bike (bb ideally) and lean back straight arms, then adjust your body position in small increments back and forth by moving your hips.
    Starting with your weight hanging far back over the rear wheel is giving gou more leverage to pull up but it's absolutely not being in control, especially at slow speeds on flat, gravity and speed are terrible cheaters.

    • @EmilyHorridge
      @EmilyHorridge  หลายเดือนก่อน

      As you rightly point out, you start with your hips centred over the BB. You move them down and you allow your arms to extend forward - that gives you straight arms. But it is impossible to extend the arms without the hips sliding back towards the back of the bike. It's really just semantics. Sometimes when I coach I see that someone needs to think about extending their arms forward, and sometimes they need to think about sliding their butt back - we all compute stuff in our minds a little differently.
      Also at this point in the process, we're just trying to get the front wheel in the air without pulling or bending the arms. Once we're up there with a little bit of momentum of course we move our hips fore and aft to adjust the balance point and continue in the manual, like you say. I think perhaps you didn't listen/watch properly because nowhere did I suggest starting with the weight hanging off the back, you and me both know that isn't going to work. Cheers.
