the crossbow is way better than msb(i). It has higher accuracy, the range strength of dragon arrows and you can equip a shield like odium ward with extra defence , strength and accuracy.
The eclipse chest is really good as well. Gives a 3 str bonus and 31 ranged attack. You lose 1 str bonus compared to the melee chest options, but there is a good chance that one bonus point won't be the difference in your next max hit anyways. Only crap thing is it's Defense vs melee is trash.
One thing that I think nobody has caught onto with the Salamanders in general is that they effectively behave as ranged weapons with 1 tile's worth of range, hence it being able to burn kree'arra and whatnot. If you have a diagonal safespot or have large monsters that you can take advantage of pathfinding on to create diagonal safespots that wouldn't otherwise be possible with normal melee weapons (+ halberd being slow), the salamander outputs cost-efficient DPS beating out even a crystal halberd! When looking into the point, that you should achieve 99 hunter as your first skill, then it makes sense, but it would be beneficial to mention, that for Ironmans you have to have 91 hunter, to hunt Moonlight Antelopes, to be able to get ammo :) for example, I'm an ironman, who have done a bit of a gameplay (1270 total) and thought, that wow, this crosbow is something else, but then I looked into the levels that are required to even use it (75 fletching and 91 hunter) and understood, that it's much easier to get rune crossbow and broad bolts, than this.
Tonalztics of ralos has a big place in larger scale raids, mainly being megascales for it to be worth using over other options. I don't think it's worth taking into Inferno unless you're hunting the absolute peak world record speedrun. But I can see the price landing at 30-40m gp and Jagex releasing new magic based bosses in the future in which case this item will find a use.

I'm not actually sure if it's entirely better than a rune cb w/ diamond bolts, since the range strength and accuracy do suffer, but you get a 3 tick attack cycle which is considerably faster. I assume the attack speed is what makes it better dps
range dwh is so much better thna bp at sara, because if u gamer u just kill mager then blood barrage melee and range so you wouldnt want to waste the blowpipe spec, the biggest issue with range dwh at sara is its inventory space
Atlatl still roles accuracy off of ranged bonus, so it's REALLY awkward to use efficiently on anything with enough defense. Trying to throw in the set makes it even more awkward, because it doesn't have good defenses compared to barrows armor, on top of the set effect being very rough to get to max stacks without getting completely chunked in the process. It is an L in terms of wider pvm, unfortunately.
I mean, that's the same downside as a blowpipe frankly, and atm the ammo looks a LOT cheaper, to the point where I feel like I could use a fire cape and leave it on the ground and it'd still cost less/hr than a blowpipe with rune or higher darts.
Might actually get the salamander and atlatl then, because often my biggest issue with switches is that I fumble with them, miss one, or the attention required to get all that sorted out causes the boss to hit me for like 70 damage and I'm scrambling to heal. How are some of the other weapons looking, like the blue moon and dual maracas? I've mostly seen how the sets are useful in pvp but I want to try them in PVM if they're going to be reasonably affordable.
I am an ironman eyeing up Zulrah soon, and I plan on doing it without a bowfa. Would the atlatl or new hunter crossbow be a better range switch? I have 99 range

The only thing that bothers me about the new crossbow is that it has no right to be this good. Cheap, low requirements, high DPS, high range bonus. The only bad thing would be that its ammo is limited, but if it weren't it would easily be the most broken Ranged weapon in the game.
The reason I think it's good is because now you have options. You can go for MSB from hard clues at rate of 1/27 and rune arrows from LMS, you can go with Rune Crossbow and Ruby/Broad bolts, you can even go barrows and try to get the karils crossbow or you can go with this weapon. You have options to choose from and the difference isn't that colossal where one is better than the other because I would say getting the hunters' crossbow and bolts for it is the longest grind for mid level ranged weapons but it's also slightly better than the others so it pays off.
Now I might be wrong but I've read that you can only reduce his defense from 80 to 70 and that he regains said defense very fast like 1 defense per 15 seconds

Get the full range set with the atalat things my clan mate told me you don't need mage swap and the burn is fantastic

Wrong. Not only does it cost 1 sunfire splinter per hit wich is about 800gp but it's also 6 tic attack speed so it's terrible exp
