  • Sprouted seeds are often ignored but are incredibly dense in loads of essential nutrients playing a significant role in a parrot's diet to ensure optimal health. The average parrot's diet should consist of around 20% sprouts and the fresher they are the more nutritional value they'll have and the more birds seem to enjoy them! The process of sprouting seeds is relatively simple once you get a hang of it, I really encourage you all to give it a shot, all you need is a jar, strainer and some seeds to get started!

    Tip: cantaloupe seeds are great to grow into baby size leaves abt 2-3 inches. Birds love it all though a pain to extract from slimy insides. I tasted it myself. It tastes like the fruit. Kind a sweet, not bitter leaf

    If you get really into this & want the most efficient option, the way I do it is
    1. Put seed into a jar of water overnight (slightly warm water if you want to speed up germination rate),
    2. In the morning, empty the jar into a hanging "strainer" made of flyscreen.
    3. dunk strainer into an ice cream container or similar full of water, or place strainer under tap & then hang somewhere that it can drip water initially (I hang on a cupboard handle, with the ice cream container I dunked it in left under it). Repeat at least once or twice a day, but the more often & warmer the water used (only luke warm though, not hot) the faster the growth
    To make a flyscreen strainer, buy new screen from a hardware store & cut into a square (about 20-30cms) & then attach strings to each corner & tie them together at a convenient height (generally about 20cms from the flyscreen) & then attach a single string to this point if you want length for hanging.
    You can also sew up the edges a bit if you find the seeds washing out when putting into the water or under the tap, where to sew will be obvious, but it's not needed
    I find this to be the fastest method to get seeds to grow, as it seems to hold just the right amount of water for best growth & it's super quick in maintenance each day.
    There's also professional seed sprouters you can buy for human sprouting too, they look nicer, but I really find the flyscreen method faster for their growth

      Hey, try shaving broccoli real early fine (the tip) into there seed bowl, and put a teaspoon of seed in there with it. then they will start to know what it will taste like. Then clip it to the side of there cage. They will start to love the clip and know it means food. Then you can start putting diffrent veggies into here for them to explore! Hope these helped. And if these doesnt work then you can always convert them onto pellets.

      Lori, vinegar is safe for cleaning bird cages, but I wouldn't leave it on food. It's not a food they naturally eat and can cause dehydration if too much is ingested. Rinse it off before feeding the birds.

      From the sweet watermelon to the bitter lemon

    How long can you keep these seeds before they go bad? are they suitable for cockateils? and how much do you recommend to give them each day? thanks :)

      Olive K They are great for any species of bird, and if your birds like them they can have as much as they want! Sprouts are great for them!

      All Australian parrots (cockatiels, budgies, cockatoos, corellas) love sprouts in the wild. I lived and cared for them and watched them in the wild for years. This is terrific. The rinsing is vital and this is the best solution I've seen yet for weaning small parrots and it's just a great nutritious, fresh food. Organic grass sprouts are also good for them, btw, and something they love. Thank you very much.

    I'm going to get my first pair of budgies next week and I'm not sure which way to go for their diet... I know most pet stores already have the birds on a seed diet so should I give them sprouts regularly until they get used to pellets? Also do I really need to get them on a pelleted diet if my main source of food for them will be fresh vegetables? Any help would be great thanks!!

    • @NinaFreya
      @NinaFreya 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A pellet diet is essential for a healthy parrot. Your birds diet should be 60% Pellets 30% Fruits and Veggies, and 10% other (treats and seeds). It may take a while to get your bird to eat pellets and a lot of people find it really hard to get their birds to eat them, but it will definitely be worth it! I made a youtube video all about how to get your parrot to eat pellets that you can watch here if you like: th-cam.com/video/pv8Ol5XRHBo/w-d-xo.html Also, many birds wont eat fruits and veggies and its even harder to get them to eat those. I'm still working on that myself. Hope this helps!

    Is it the same process for beans? I want to sprout a mix of beans and peas but I’m not sure if it’s the same proceedure.

    • @mehere8038

      yes it's the same, although may not need quite as frequent rinsing. Check if the bean & pea seeds are suitable for birds before feeding though

    Are there any specific seeds that one would use for a cockatiel?

    Say you have a bird that was only fed seed before and you want to transition then to chop, do you think sprouting some seeds to feed will help your birds be more open to eating chop?

    • @thevirtualzookeeper8226
      @thevirtualzookeeper8226 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      And also, I've heard many use seed mix, as you did. But dont most seed mixes contain pellets? Do they make seed without the pellet. Or is it fine if you sprout with the pellets?
