These straightforward action-adventure (or character action, whichever) games are probably one of my favorite genres, it's really nice to see a game like this again
This game actually looks like a lot of fun. At first I was concerned about the short length of the game, But then thought about all the longer games I haven't been able to finish yet with a busy full time job. So maybe a shorter game is what I need right now. Love the review, I think I'm going to get this game after all.
I’ll definitely check this out! After playing Elden Ring, Yakuza, Valhalla, Cyberpunk 2077, RDR2, I need a break from these massive 100+ hour games. I miss the nice short and sweet games and this looks exactly what im looking for
There is always a place in the video game market for linear games. So long as the presentation and experience offered is good. The Devil May Cry series are linear, and they are still popular. This seems like it follows that kind of style. I'm definitely interested.
I'm a western/fantasy fan who always wanted to see more of these genres combining, plus I was also just thinking about if there was anymore of these type of games. So yeah, I'm excited.
At this point the gaming industry needs more of these, as funny as that is to say. I'm not a kid anymore. I have kids. I have 45 Mintues to have some fun during nap time and I don't need a 100 hour open world right now.
Love linear games tbh some games add too much into them this is basically perfect for people that like just story and linear games obviously there are some games that are good at adding things into the game but not overwhelming the player e.g gowr, metro, resident evils etc
Fun fact, you can choose not to be overwhelmed, just stick to the main story and you can play open world games the same as a regular one! Nobody is forcing you to do anything optional.
I really appreciate how you don’t sound like you’re just trying to sound smart and sophisticated and instead give a genuine review. Looking at you, IGN.

@@staples6 I didn't even know they were reboots lol. I have only played two and it is the definition of dumb fun. The game tries to be the most dumb game you have ever played and I found it endearing. The humor is really crude and offensive. They probably wouldn't get away with it today. I can't speak on the new one but I'm guessing they most likely tamed the humor down. The gameplay is basic but fun.
Your description of the supporting characters cracked me up and really made me have an even deeper feeling that this is truly a good ol’ fashioned no nonsense video game. Can’t wait to play it
I miss these types of games. Just enjoy the gameplay. I don't have time to research about which skill tree to chose. The stupid lore, the ton on conversations and side quests. Just give me fun gameplay.
Straight-forward, fun game. After the nearly 86 hours I spent on God of War Ragnarok (and I LOVE the GoW franchise) getting the platinum--what with all the side quests, favors, and optional bosses--this is a refreshing take on just playing a game. Some of the collectibles are a bit hidden, but I've been able to find them all to this point (just finished "Pharmakon"). I'm enjoying this one.
Been waiting for this game for awhile now, so happy people are enjoying it. The concept, world, and action look like a lot of fun! This will be a nice change of pace after I fully finish God of War Ragnarok.
I like how this games main villans are vampires but you don't exclusively fight vampires. It definitely has a castlevainia vibe in that way. In this game they introduce so many different monster types that going forward they could go in any direction with the main villan. I like how in this game the vampires are reserved as the tougher enemies in the game and I really like how the lore goes into detail about how high born vampires are the original bloodline so they are like super bosses it's really cool. They really gave us a taste of what could be a very large and diverse world where there could be more than one main villan species of monsters. You could go with necromancers as the main villans or the werewolves or the jenu giants. I feel like there was alot of love put into this world I just hope it can survive long enough as a series to develop some real depth in storytelling because other than fixing some glitches and co op gameplay connection issues storytelling is really the only other thing this game needs to work on going forward. The combat is beautiful and so much fun any issues I have with the game are so quickly forgotten when I'm facing off against 2 highborns and 5 nagals on hard difficulty it takes me back to devil may cry I love it.
So I just heard of this game LITERALLY today. Saw a couple of reviews then wanted to check gameranx's verdict. I love games like this; not afraid to just be games and something I like - retro style, linear shooters vibing from the PS3 era that can be beaten in couple of sessions. No lie bought the game right after for £42. I hope I end up enjoying it. We need to show love for more titles like this. 🙂
I dont care about most of the negative Reviews. It’s a good old shooter with some crazy supernatural Elements. I mean you are a cowboy with a electric powerfist. How cool is that. Not every game has to be a 200hour Storytelling masterpiece. I love the Order 1886 so I will probably like this too
I'm always excited for a new third person game especially the ones that choose to focus on the story. No open world, no side quests. Just hop in the game, beat it, and replay it. Those are rare these days.
Jake you had me at Hugh Jackman's van helsing, been waiting for a before you buy on this game since I first heard about it and it looks exactly what I was hoping for.
Coming from Flying Wild Hog this is just about exactly what I expected. I played all the Shadow Warrior games, loved 1, 2 was just okay, and 3 was awesome start to finish. I even enjoyed Hard Reset: Redux. Evil West is reminding me of what games used to be like in the PS2 era when developers were taking way more chances with wild ideas like this.
Hard disagree on Shadow Warrior 2, I think it depends on how you play it, the gameplay was fun as hell with lots of cool enemies/locations and epic moments, getting into sword fights was the best part. All 3 are very different but I think they're all just as good as eachother.
@@cenciende9401 I think for me the map layouts killed the fun factor big time. Gameplay mechanics were solid for sure, story was good, but there was just something about the semi-open world aspect about the maps that I really didn't like. The first and third games were very much linear games, and I personally loved that about them considering there are so many bloated games these days. Also I have very little game time anymore so I expected 2 to be a lot more linear. That's probably what I loved most about 3. I think it only took 10 hours to beat it, and get every trophy when I played it thru PS Plus so for me that's huge.
Man I loved SW2, the map is kinda meh indeed, but the combat was enough to make me love that game tough, I really liked using multiple melee weapons, and choosing if my revolver would be a slow hand cannon or a fast double revolver gunslinger style weapon, for example. I hope they make a SW4 at some point.
I think I’ll definitely be getting it…but not for $60. While the content is good, there’s just not enough of it to justify that price. Especially when you look at other games on the market. I get paying that much for Horizon: Forbidden West or Witcher 3 but not this. Even if I were to like this game MORE, I don’t get why this is in the same price range. Looks fun as hell. I think the developers did a great job.
Games were always priced over the 50 dollar range, for decades. Even old Atari and NES games back in the day. Maybe some people such as yourself have become spoiled by having these super long games, packed with 30, 40 and even 100 hours of gameplay bits. Maybe that's for some people and i will never say it's a bad thing (Breath of the Wild being my favorite game of the last decade). I'm just saying that not every game has to be an open world, branching with a ton of seemingly unending activities. There are other videogame types and genres after all.
@@pedrochevez2090 I don’t think I’ve been “spoiled”. I love all types of games, short or long. My point was that the shorter games I’ve enjoyed I’ve paid less for. I didn’t pay less because they’re not as good, I paid less because they’re not as long. To be honest though, I usually don’t pay full price for any game.
This game just hit Game Pass and I knew you guys had to have covered it when it came out. The moment you brought up PS3/Xbox 360 games, I immediately thought of the Deadpool game from 2013. It didn't do great financially or critically but it was pure simple silly fun, and its perfectly captured the Deadpool vibe. Evil West reminds me a lot of that game.
Evil West is the perfect example of how nostalgic blinds us to the flaws of old school linear campaign games. People called this game mid, which stopped me from buying it when it came out. It’s upsetting because it’s honestly just stupid fun with minor flaws. I’m mad I didn’t buy it when it came out, but hey, it’s on gamepass now if anyone on Xbox or PC wants to try it

being a straightforward game from the era of PS3 and Xbox360 is actually the best thing about it.... I really love this style and I'd like to see more of it.... I'm tired of the open world games, for God's sake they are exhausting.
Seems like a good game for people tired of huge but empty open worlds with repetitive quests and people sick of RPG elements and crafting being put in everything these days .
I can't think of any games with a huge empty world or repetitive quests and I've completed over 500 games... I never have a clue what people are talking about when they say things like that, I have very little time for gaming these days so I guess I'm just choosing all the best ones to play.
@@cenciende9401 AC Valhalla. As a huge fan of the AC franchise, AC sucks as an RPG. Truly hope they meant it when they said Mirage would be a return to the old style.
One of the best games which I played last 5 years. Everything is well balanced, story, combat, shooting, action. Honorable mention- very juicy and satisfying combat ❤
One of my favourite games of all time is Bulletstorm, i must have bought it 4 times over the years and played through it 8 times. And Evil West reminds me of that - dumb, stupid fun that I can pick up for an hour or two after work and just mindlessly play, but still feel entertained. Maybe £40 was a bit steep for that experience, but I don't regret my purchase.
The game footage and description gives me so much Bulletstorm vibes, which is a very good thing..! I loved that game enough to have already bought it for both for 360 and PS4. Just simple escapist gameplay fun set in a creatively designed world. I hope this one holds to that standard… 😁
I'm excited for this since I love these types of adventures that isn't necessarily "Elden Ring" hard on the difficulty. Being that it only takes 12 hours to finish is kind of a bummer. Wished it was longer to like 20 hours. Hopefully this do sells so a much fleshed out sequel can be developed. Flying Wild Hog has something special on their hands here really
A bummer? Is that a joke? 12 hours is huge, the first Last of Us was 12 hours long, the original Uncharted games were under 10 each, Dead Space was less than 12. The list goes on and on! Must be nice being unemployed with all the time in the world wanting only massive games...
@@cenciende9401 not really... I mean wished there was more content wise and heck 12 hour games, I can finish in like 6 days (since I treat playing games as rest time after work)
12 hours with solid replay value is much, much better than most bloated messes we end up getting these days. Way too many games overstay their welcome by padding out their runtime with nothing but excess baggage.
I am so on the fence about this game! Part of me wants to buy it so bad but worried it will get repetitive. I love that it looks like a classic video game video game. Love that.
This is one of the best games I've played in the last decade. FPS shooters had Bulletstorm and 10 years later third person action games have this. Balls-to-the-wall non-stop classic video game fun. Holy shit, this game is so good.
ive been watching these for years but always usually buy the game when it drops or have no intention of buying it but still watch just because i enjoy them so much either way im watching but this time it actually decided if i bought the game or not and i definitely am thank you jake
I picked this up yesterday on a Xbox sale. I got a few hours in last night and Jake couldn't be more right about it having an "old-school" game type feel. It was tons of fun. Can't wait to dive in over the weekend and get to the guts of this game.
There are not many games these days that are as forgiving for older graphic cards (GTX 1050). I can play this on epic settings at 30fps and it gives me that old-school R&R. So, a definite must-buy for me!
This game seems awesome! Don't get me stats are sometimes fun, but having them in every game nowadays isn't always fun. I miss playing games like this, so I'll definitely look into getting this.
This game is great, it’s a refreshing new take of the Wild West setting that has you gunslinging and electrifying until your hearts content. The game knows exactly what it is and it sets out to be just that. It has a good upgrading system for the character as well as all your weapons also so plenty of options if you’re like me and love having a good upgrading mechanic in games. If you’re looking for an arcade feeling third person linear shooter that is easy to pick up on the fly this should definitely be near the top of your list. Just on a personal opinion if I were to try and compare this game to anything else gameplay wise at least I would say it’s a loose mash up of god of war & gears of war.
Between the aesthetics and gameplay style it looks like it will be a fantastic entry from Flying Wild Hog! Really enjoyed Shadow Warrior 1 & 2 and have been meaning to get the 3rd and play through it
I pre-ordered this with a surplus of expiring Best Buy rewards, so I can’t complain. This looks like a refreshing change of pace. Well done, Sir! Also, well played with the “Medieval West” line. Haha…
I'm actually enjoying this game, I think it's pretty underrated. I think the difficulty curve is kind of bad though. I went from being able to take no hits whatsoever to dying constantly between like one encounter. I won't finish it before Callisto Protocol releases, and I will definitely be ditching it to play that. It's not good enough to delay me from playing that.
Yes it is. DF says it's shader compilation causing it. The way they figured it out is the stuttering happens every time something is seen in the game for the first time. If you were to restart a checkpoint everything you already did would be studder free. A shame they released it that way.
I think Plague Tale does this simple format brilliantly, the levels (or chapters) are linear but not so that your hand is held, it tells a brilliant story and develops the character with dialogue as you are walking through the level. Hopefully this game and future games follow that format, I don’t want every single game to be linear but just a few so have a choice of gameplay because everything does feel complicated or open world at the minute.
"There is a co-op mode apparently but I didn't get to test that, I didn't have anybody." I felt that on many levels.

I think I preferred Darkwatch, but its still fun. I have to admit it that it was overstaying it's welcome after a while. It's been a long time since I've played Darkwatch though so I may have had the same issue back then.

A little too much copy and paste from God of War mechanics for me but if people don't mind.

Are the Shadow Warrior reboot games fun? I played the original games from the 90s but have been hesitant to try the reboots.

I love the Order 1886 so I will probably like this too
sometimes a simple old game that doesn't change the world is still fun to play through
I'm always excited for a new third person game especially the ones that choose to focus on the story. No open world, no side quests. Just hop in the game, beat it, and replay it. Those are rare these days.
The best games I’ve played liked that were the splinter cell games…. I miss those
Jake you had me at Hugh Jackman's van helsing, been waiting for a before you buy on this game since I first heard about it and it looks exactly what I was hoping for.
Thank god for something like this game, my favorite games are single player or coop games like this and like jake said about 360/ps3 era
3 was garbage and short. Wtf are you talking about??? 2 is better than 3 any day.

@@gameranxTV you’re welcome sometimes a good simple linear game like this is good, to many shooters and open world games these days.
All I could think during this was how sweet a Mistborn era 2 game would be in this style.
