  • Silver Springs is Florida’s ORIGINAL theme park! It’s right in the middle of Florida in Silver Springs, located between the city of Ocala and the Ocala National Forest. It’s really a unique Florida attraction, with tours daily on glass bottom boats that have been operating for over 100 years! There’s so much fun history here, but for nature lovers, the stars of Silver Springs are the monkeys! Yep, there are hundreds of wild monkeys at Silver Springs. On this adventure, we paddle down the 5-mile Silver River and we see so much wildlife that we’re excited to share with you in this video. You’ll see lots of wild monkeys, alligators, and even manatees! Silver Springs is now one of our favorites, a Florida paradise full of nature and adventure! Hope you enjoy the episode!

As a Floridian, there is so much history in the Ocala Forest and on the Ocklawaha River. The Silver Springs is a gorgeous spring. Watch those monkeys though, they will attack, especially when they have babies. Our last trip presented a brand new baby and the alpha male was very protective.

    • @PSAdventures

It's a beautiful area and we'll surely be back to just enjoy paddling around those clear waters! Yikes on the monkey situation though. Hopefully we can all keep a good distance from them so that we can keep the peace between humans and monkeys!

We are originally from Louisiana. My husband and I visited the State Park when we first moved here over 10 years ago. The trip was special to me, because my father went on his Senior trip to Florida and went on the boats back in 1964. He had already past by the time we made it here... so I didn't get the chance to share it with him. Thanks for taking all of us on your adventures. ❤

Thank you so much for sharing Dorothy! That really is a special memory remembering your father going to Silver Springs. I think this park has a lot of special memories to many since it's such an old and special park. We're so happy you enjoyed and thanks for watching! ❤️❤️❤️

In the past the monkey troop became so large and aggressive that a large group broke off and swam across the river and colonized the other side. When I lived there they had two troops. One on each side but I’m sure several other break ups have happened. In the 70s, we never saw them that far down river. They are aggressive and will bite you so don’t get close. The larger males are particularly dangerous. In high school we would swim down river in the summer. The alligators would just move to another area when we entered the river. Near the take out point enters canal there was the “Tarzan Tree”. Steps were still in the huge Cypress tree where Johnny Weissmuller would dive out of the tree for the movies. It was our favorite thing to do.

    • @PSAdventures
      @PSAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

Wow! Those are some cool memories to have. I'm sure we passed right by the Tarzan tree and didn't realize it. We've gone a couple times now and seen the monkey very close to the beginning of the run and towards the end so we're thinking there might be two troops there today. Thanks for sharing that! 😊

There are no true native species, common ones here are from elsewhere too and some fluidity is expected, personally would like to have more tropical vibes and monkeys was the only thing left to make Florida iconic, they should treat them.

Love the new bikes! I need to find that map. It is awesome! We would love to swim there one day. A long time ago, they allowed swimming but not anymore. We have been twice and have not seen the monkeys. One day lol! There were a lot of alligators on your visit plus manatees! What a fun day! You guys should think about a blow-up kayak. I would be a little scared being on a paddle board with all those gators. Great share! 🙂

Thanks so much you guys! 💓 We had a few people tell us that once you get a little farther out where you're not in the park you can swim but it would be a little freaky with seeing so many alligators! 😮 Yeah it would be a little scary if the paddleboard ever got a hole. We've thought that maybe after X number of years we'd just automatically replace it just in case. Or maybe get a hard paddleboard? We couldn't believe we saw those monkeys! Some people had told us they went almost 80 times and saw them twice. Unbelievable. Thanks for watching! 💖

Alligators mostly avoid us when we're around the springs, but they are animals in the wild and we always try to be alert when we're around the water. They're also more likely to be on the defensive if they feel their nest is being threatened during baby season. So it's always good to stay alert and keep a good distance. 😀

The monkeys were left by the film crew in the 30s or 40s. They filmed most of the outside scenes for the old black and white Tarzan movies. So cool you got to experience the Silver River! Such a beautiful area and we feel so lucky to have seen the monkeys! We hear they've been pretty active over the last couple of months. Totally understand about the plastic water bottles. Thanks for the tip and sharing that info with everyone. Those are our main water bottles that we have reused for, well, probably way longer than they should be. Probably about a year. So we weren't going to litter, but it's a serious concern for sure. We actually used to swim at Silver Springs back when they allowed it my mother and her siblings and her father and mother also swam there back in the 40’s and 50’s and I don’t know if you know it but the reason the monkeys are there is because they were brought in for the Tarzan movie and now they’ve been migrated as far is Naples. They’ve never hurt anyone even though people like to say they are scary. They are in “their” habitat and unless you’re trying to intimidate them or rush toward their babies, they are very peaceful and you wouldn’t even know that they were there. They are so quiet.

We turn our back for two seconds and the sucker steals our lunches lol - we’ve become more more hesitant. The monkeys are fun to look at for sure, but sadly due to people who don’t follow the rules and feed them - many of the monkeys have become bolder and approaching people and stealing food now to where they are very much becoming an issue now for everyone! FYI, easier way to pump paddle board, the nozzle attached to the hose pull it apart and buy any 12v or D battery pump and the nozzle will attach to the pump. I did this for my Bote floating dock and it is perfect.

Hey y’all!! I just left Buckees in Daytona and thought I seen y’all leaving. It’s Sunday the 4th 😬👍🏼
Just curious if that was y’all? If so I sure wish I could’ve met you!! Gosh…. Would’ve been incredible 😊
Wish all the best for 2023

Wow Kenny! That would have been cool to meet you too! 🚐 It definitely wasn't us though. We've only been to a Buckees once a long time ago to stop in and see what it's like. It's a cool place though. That's where Sarah bought one of her camping shirts. If you ever see us though definitely come up and say hello! 😊

It is against Florida law to feed the monkeys!

I always feed them sticky buns with a laxative inside. They love it!

    • @PSAdventures

Yes! We would definitely not feed the monkeys! They'd probably get aggressive over the long-term.

😂 Omg that's terrible. Don't feed the monkeys. That would be very messy.

I went as a kid and we road the boats in the morning and I remember them putting out large oat blocks. I saw some giant fish that morning. Bass and Cats bigger than me

@@PSAdventures Yes they were eating them and probably to bring them in for the tour.

What most people don’t know is that boat motors only extend 12 to 18 inches below the hull but, boaters are consistently ridiculed by paddlers. Manatees are injured by fast moving boats and the manatees inability to evade quickly. Motored boats and manatees coexist fine in no wake zones like the silver river. Take it from someone who has traveled this river many times over the last 40 years.

Really beautiful nature as well as monkeys, but the monkey Florida looks very similar to the monkeys in Cambodia.

Thanks so much for your comment! The monkeys that were brought to Silver Springs many years ago are rhesus macaques. I'm sure they're probably also in Cambodia. They're pretty playful but can also be pretty aggressive. 🙉

I lived in Ocala for 14 years across from the back side of Silver Springs/Wild Waters and never was lucky enough to see those monkeys. Animals are clever, they either swam or hitched rides on the backs of gators. BTW, I never knew squirrels could swim until I seen one swimming across the river. Birds apparently like to surf logs downstream as well. Funny the things one notices when they slow down from the rat race.

Just subscribed, beautiful work and thank you for advocating for the manatees. Shame they allow propellers in the area. You both have such a lovely kind calm vibe, appreciate it. lol monkeys aren’t sweet 😂. They may be cute and I want the best for all animals but sweet they are not.

Thank you so much! Welcome to our channel! ❤️ it would be so great if everyone could enjoy and feel safe in the parks - the animals included. So about the monkeys - we've heard they can be quite aggressive and even fling poo! We tried our best to observe them from afar and thankfully we had a great experience. But definitely we'll continue to keep a good distance! No poo flinging, thank you 🤣

It’s a myth that the rhesus monkeys at Silver Springs were brought there for a Tarzan movie. The monkeys predate any Tarzan movie. The monkeys were brought there in the 1930s by a river boat captain, Colonel Tooey, who bought and released only 6 monkeys on an island at the springs. He was told that they couldn’t swim, but the information was bad and they are excellent swimmers, so the monkeys escaped and have been there ever since.
There are at least nine different tribes of monkeys along the Silver River and even in the Ocala National Forest along the Oklawaha River, which is a fantastic river to kayak or canoe. Lots of huge gators along the river banks sunning themselves.
Any river in Florida has large gators. One of the best kayaking experience in Florida is the Rock Springs run near Apopka. You can rent kayaks or canoes at Kings Landing and the people there will even shuttle someone from your party back to the landing after parking your car 6 miles down river. That way, your car awaits you at the end of the river where you can just leave the kayak or canoe that you rented and they will get them later. You just drive home from there. It’s about a 6 mile river through some of the most pristine Florida you will ever see.
Rock Springs run and Juniper Creek in the Ocala National Forest are the two best canoe and kayaking experience you can have in Florida. I have been living in Florida for more than 40 years and have covered every attraction there is and those are the two best waters you can travel to see what Florida looked like at the time Ponce De Leon first stepped foot on the Florida peninsula.

Just found your channel. Nice vlog! We love going to Silver Springs (and we'll check out other vlogs you posted of other springs we know like Juniper). Did you happen to see if they've completed the construction on the museum yet at SS (near where the food area used to be)? It was such a nice museum and last time we were there, they were still working on fixing it up again. Subscribed! :)

We're so happy you enjoyed it! It was a lot of fun experiencing this park. We actually went in March so it wasn't extremely hot like it would be in the summertime. Really though once you're on the water it's not so bad. If you love wildlife then you'll love this park! The glass bottom boats are well worth it! 😊
