Florida's NEWEST State Park! 💗 GILCHRIST BLUE SPRINGS

  • Gilchrist Blue Springs is the newest park in the Florida State Park system, and it's right in the middle of Florida. The deep blue spring is crystal clear and is amazing for snorkeling and paddling. It gets busy on the weekends, but we still found a way to have the spring all to ourselves. When the spring was too busy, we enjoyed the campground and found a nice hike on the nature trail that took us through a shaded, windy path of huge, ancient cypress trees. It's no wonder Gilchrist Blue Springs became a Florida State Park, it is absolutely beautiful here. Hope you enjoy the episode!

    This reminds me of being a kid when my parents used to take me camping in Florida instead of going to Disney World. Would much rather be camping.

    I used to camp there years ago when it was privately owned. There was a platform about 10 above the water level just above the boil that we used to dive off of into the water. Also there was a boardwalk that led from the spring all the way to the river. There was another spring to the left of the spring as you are facing in the direction of the river, that was about 30 to 40 feet wide and has a small stream as its spring run. Over the edge of this small spring was a small deck about 10 feet high that we used to fish from. FYI, for those that don't know, the water in the spring is 72 degrees year round.

      Wow! We wish we could have seen that in person! That must have been so cool to be able to jump off the platform into the water. When we went it looked like it was under a lot of construction so it will be interesting to see what they do to the swimming area. We loved it though. What a beautiful place to grow up around! 💖

    • @isaiahshamar
      @isaiahshamar 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Same! My friends and I used to compete to see who could do the best dives off of that platform. I'm honestly glad the state runs it now because there wasn't very much thought for safety.
      My friend and I once had to rescue a kid who was alone and struggling to swim halfway down that boardwalk. Even if there aren't lifeguards, there will at least be trained staff to respond to emergencies and to coordinate additional rescue efforts if need be.
      Great video!

    I live about 10 minutes away from Blue Springs and all the other springs in this area. Don't forget Ichetucknee Springs and river. You can take a tube down the Ich and take the tram back to your car. I live in a river community on the Santa Fe. It's a great place to live. I have lived around here for the last 27 years. Raised my kids going to these springs and to the beaches also. Florida is my happy place since I moved here from California. I have one RV spot that I rent out occasionally. This is the real heartlands of North Florida here around Fort White and High Springs.

    We go here almost every weekend! Early in the day is the best time to go when it's not packed during the week. Unfortunatley there's some damage/risk of landslide that happened during the last hurricane, so the hillside has black tarps to stop the erosion, and the retainer wall is roped off, which cuts out the major portion of the beach area. The main benefit of this spring over all the others in the area (Head/Poe/Rum Island/Ginney) is that it has a sloping beach which is great for little kids, like we have!

    • @PSAdventures
      @PSAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for sharing! That makes a lot of sense now why we saw the black tarps. The shallow beach was really nice and we saw a lot of families enjoying the area. It's reminds us a little of Alexander Springs where you can easily walk right into the beach. Definitely agree on going either early or late to avoid the crowd. Thanks for watching! ❤️❤️❤️

Yeah, you can rent canoes and kayaks there as well. There’s springs all down the Santa Fe. I love Rum Island as well, which is a short distance BY WATER from there. A lot of the OLD GROWTH cypress trees were logged out in the late 1800s-early 1900s around the state, but there’s some that still remain like Aric. I was there when it was a privately owned as well.

They aren’t usually a huge threat to people. More to small dogs and children. I kayak down the springs where there are tons and they usually lay in the sun and ignore you. Never had a problem or been worried. But I don’t swim in those areas or if I need to get in the water to cool off, it has to be clear water so I can see what’s around me.

      Definitely! Always wise to be on the lookout for gators when swimming in any Florida waters. Have you seen they can even be in the ocean!! Rare, but possible.

    Definitely nice waters but I would've been terrified of gators.

      It is definitely interesting - the idea of swimming somewhere where there are definitely gators around and they could creep up at any time. But most of the time, they really do keep to themselves and they're more likely to be suntanning somewhere quiet. 💓

      Wow we've heard from several others that said they grew up in this area and remember this park. It must be well loved in your area. I wonder how many of you guys know each other?? That would be pretty cool. Thanks so much for sharing! 😊
