This review...actually felt legit! She went over almost all the aspects of the game and went into detail about it (to a good extent anyway) and brought up good and possible bad points in the game that would affect your choice in getting the game. She also sounded like she actually played the game(big points right there)! This was a great review! Not only for the game, but the way it was presented as well! Keep doing reviews like these IGN, reviews that actually seem like someone's real opinion (and someone who actually knows about the franchise or genre. Wow...I said actually a lot.)!
Meghan Sullivan... YOu couldv given this game a 1 i wouldnt care.... You analyzed and reflected upon the game has a whole, mentioning it's details and contents... i am proud... If only the chick that did Pokemon review could learn from you..

SilverShion The score is not the problem really...thats whatever. The problem was the review it self. Watch the video and you will see how she made no initiative to explain a elaborate detail on the games new improvements and to why she feels 7.8 was justified.

SilverShion"A review is supposed to talk about new features"........why should reviewers feel the need to ignore new improvements over new features? New features is great, but whats the purpose of buy a new game if no new improvement was made from the previous game? I honestly don't see COD, AC or sports fan buying new games simply over new features. You can add in new features as much as you want to a game but it the same dull formula is there then it sorta just makes the new features null in void.
Wow can we get a Re-Review on the Pokemon with this reviewer? All details explained and gave an adequate reason for the scoring. As a person who only trolls on youtube, I applaude the well thought out review.
This is one of the best review videos IGN has put out in a while, it goes over many aspects of the game and the faults that were pointed out were reasonable. Good job.
wow someone on IGN that actually knows what there talking about, they should just fire all the other reviewers that can review crap and let her do them since she actually tries to play the game more than 10mins
Definitely true and he has been my favorite reviewer since he enjoys expressing his love for games but he seems to be more suited for play station releases as a whole rather then releases from a specific series.
Harry- kun i bet if you handed this game to him hed still praise it regardless. I hope he brings it up in the next podcast so we can hear his brief thoughts. Ps i love your name and avatar. Quite clever
It's been a excellent persona filled year. Still waiting for P5. Which will probably surpass Tales of symphonia or xenoblade as my favorite Rpg of all time.
We will see, many Jrpgs are coming. Persona 5, Xenoblade Chronicles X and Final Fantasy XV (Not too sure about this one, but maybe me and all the gaming community is wrong and this could become a good game...), and maybe Im missing other titles
***** We will see.. that one seems... too "japanese" for may taste. And when I say too "japanese" I mean that its almost like an anime, and man, Im tired of many anime clitches, but hey, maybe its going to be good and Im just talking shit :D
Persona is literally an anime game... And it has an anime... You know. People calling each other -chans and -kuns. There's no excuse for you to be saying that Zestiria is too "Japanese".
Persona 4 timeline: Persona 4 (April to October) > Persona Q(culture festival) > Persona 4 (October to March) > Persona 4 Arena and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax(Golden Week, April) > Persona 4 Dancing All Night (i guess, i dont know) This game is cannon
pizago93 Nope, multiple ATLUS developers and the translation team have confirmed it is cannon. They even did a video answering various questions and mentioned that it was cannon on the ATLUS USA channel.
Glad there are at least SOME good reviewers at IGN. I was going to buy this game either way though. P4G is my favorite game after all. But P3 is also amazing.
Thanks for the Persona 4 spoiler... I was kind of in the middle of my first playthrough in Golden. Overall a really good review, with a legitimately pleased-sounding reviewer. Though it seems to misrepresent the series. At least a little recognition that it's not the first dungeon crawler in the Megami Tensei series would be nice. This is not a mix of Persona and Etrian Odyssey. It's a mix of Persona 1 and 3 and 4 (or Soul Hackers; or Strange Journey)
Rocky-Senpai I won't pretend to know anything else about the game as I haven't played it, but it's a first person dungeon crawler. Persona 1, Soul Hackers, and Strange Journey are also all first person dungeon crawlers. That's really all I was saying. But they definitely do have that in common. Like I said, it's not the first. To say otherwise is kinda silly
This review is spot on with almost everything I thought about Persona Q. Hands down my game of the year for the 3DS. As for Nintendo owner not knowing anything about Persona 3 & 4 stories, that why it pays not to be a fan boy. P3 FES and P4Golden were great!
I love this game simply because it was my FIRST Persona game, it introduced me into the series, and IMMEDIATELY bought a PS Vita to play Persona 4 GOLDEN
So I just realized that with the P4 setting taking place in spring of 2011, the characters of P4 could have warned the P3 characters about the Fukushima disaster that occurred in March of 2011.
can you turn off the cut-in images when attacking shadows. I don't know why but I haven't experienced any of this during my playthrough. like in 0:03 ?
Why is everything compared to Etrian Odyssey? I know Atlus is tied to both, but you can keep it in the SMT family by comparing it to games like Strange Journey, Soul Hackers, or even the original Persona games. Granted, the map system is a lot like Etrian Odyssey, but as far as the battles, it's just classic SMT.
EO is very different when it comes to party customization and battle mechanics. I don't know why people want this to be considered SMT when it's really Wizardry /s
When i learned the truth behind the labyrinths it honestly made me cry worse than any smt or persona game had. This game went from happy crossover to depression quite fast

I love how I don't have to waste 30 minutes redoing a fusion just to get the right fucking skills. Now that we can just choose it is much less of an inconvenience. It was never really a challenge just time consuming and inconveniencing pressing the same button over and over. I hope this returns in Persona 5.
I want to replay Persona 4 before I play this so it's fresh in my mind, but I'm torn between doing a New Game+ on the PS2 version or playing Golden since my family just got a PSTV for Christmas. I've never done either.
Because instead of actually reading the reviews and applying those points with context into the pros/cons, people skip to the number and think they're clever when they knock it.
Andrew May That and the review we are actually talking about did not address anything informative about the game, instead it was just a fangirl praising the series over and over again mentioning some personal issues she had with Ruby and Sapphire..
For how much i love the Persona series i just can't get into these Eterain Odyssey games. Instead of making me constantly work on making a map they should have made it so i could walk around the school myself and make the dungeons 3rd person. I know that would not make it a Eterian Odyssey spin off anymore but i could live without it.
My only problem with this review, which I felt at least was thorough enough (though I'm only a couple hours into the game) was her saying she needed to break out a pen and paper. All that functionality is actually built into the game, though the footage didn't show it being used. Sorry, minor gripe, but it's there.
I don't really get the point of this Persona game on 3ds. Almost no one know the story of the previous games. I was really hoping for a Persona 3 and Persona 4 crossover, but not one like Etrian Odyssey. I really wanted a proper Persona game :'(
***** but at least in the vita you can play p3p and p4g. Is like releasing a fanservice Halo game in nintendo. I'm pretty sure that almost everyone won't understand what's going on lol But I think it's all because the Etrian Odyssey team have a deal with nintendo or something like that.
Darak Zx I have to agree, Persona Q is only suitable to those who have played the previous P3 and P4. Because if not, they would totally have no idea what is going on lol
Well the general amount of Sales is going to come from Persona fans and Shin Megami Tensei was a big hit on the 3DS, Persona is a subseries of SMT which means there is already a stock of SMT fans on the 3ds not to mention the SMT Devil Survivor games and Devil Summoner (the first in that series to be on the 3ds with DS1&2 on ps2). I really don't see what the confusion is about. SMT has a long history with the Ds series.
I'm a big fan of the persona series but, I'm somewhat glad I cancelled my preorder for this one. I'm just not feeling it. I guess with Persona 3, Persona 3 FES, Persona 4, Persona 4 Golden, Persona 4 Arena, Persona 4 Ultimax, Persona 4 the Animation, Persona 4 Golden the animation, and the Persona 3 Movies, I've had all I can stomach with these characters. I guess I'm just ready to move on. Looks cute though :)
Maybe it wouldn't take as long for you to backtrack if you, I dunno... Used the R or L button instead of having to turn everywhere? Or or! How about this? B button to run. Autopilot. Rush mode.
The battle system is fun. and I love the characters, I'm worried about the adventure mode. There is no navigation through the maps, and the labyrinth seems to require a lot of patience. I may wait for a price drop. I love the animation and music though.
I've been looking forward to this game for quite a while, since I love handheld RPGs and dungeon crawlers, but will I be able to enjoy this without having played Persona 3 and 4? I haven't finished 4 yet and have never played 3.
I'm assuming you own P4 so I think you should finish the game first and then play PQ with P4 protag route. Or at least get to the culture festival part which was in September or October.
i love persona 4 and 3, and almost all shin megami tensei games and etrian odyssey games too. persona q is great, on many areas... but i just hope the super difficulty even on risky is not something that will be come a standard in future tittles it was very disappointing, the only reason i ever lose in risky was that i will run out of SP before beating the bosses because they had so much life but they wont do ever enough damage to kill me, actually only once in a while regular shadows were more dangers.. sad...=/
Is IGN the only channel to give this game a video review? Guess I'll have to wait for user reviews to come in. Not that this review is bad but I'm not going to base my purchase on it alone.
I liked Etrian Odyssey, really I did, but I remember ranting over the demo for 10 min about the goddamn manual mapping. After a few minutes I became tolerant of it. I really hate the manual mapping system for a persona game though. Auto mapping attempts to help, but it isn't actual auto mapping. It surely doesn't help that your current location cursor takes note of further away walls when your "auto mapping" won't even commit to tracing it in.
I was at the mall and was walking past the GameStop and I saw Persona Q and I noticed it was for the DS and my heart sank because I wanted it for PS3 or PS4
After watching such a great review this one was (points explained, done well, no bullshit complaints, all criticisms objectively justified), I wonder if the reviewer who reviewed ORAS had gotten sacked yet cos of the hate its been getting. Don't get me wrong it was a shit review but I wonder if shes been punished in some way by IGN (like a pay cut or something) for causing such a meme inducing review of "too much water". I doubt it but either she should get that or should re-do the review properly or get someone else to do it. But IGN won't redo reviews so its doubtful.
I didn't know it had a first person view when in dungeons that kinda disappoints me But my real issue with this game is all the voice changes though Other then that I'm sure ill love it
Should I play this game in easy? I love Persona 4 story when I watched the anime and I do really want to play the games but I can't get my hands on it. I have 2DS and later I'm having a copy of it. I never really played a JRPG so I was worried if this game is too punishing for me.
Considering that I really love Etrian Odessey, I'm probably gonna love this. >w< Plus I love games that have awesome/interesting dynamic characters so....
Hmm... if the pacing is that sluggish then maybe I _will_ play PQ2 on Normal rather than Hard the first time... I've never played an Etrian game though so maybe I should just do that first
I have a question: 60 Hours Gaming? What do you actually do in this time except the first-person-dungeons and battling? I mean in Persona 4 you had all this school-stuff at least...
party interactions, optional boss fights, side quests, and you play the 60 hour story through different perspectives, P3 protag and P4 protag, so to get the complete perspectives of both is about 120+ hours of content
I mean you just said battling. I don't consider side quests a part of story hours, and story wise its 60 hours long. A persona game is really as long as you make it. If you do everything possible in it, it'll last you a while, and it has good replay value :)
Pro's: A good Game Con's: Fking boring. I haven't played Persona 3 or 4 and bought it since it is technically still a shin megami tensei game. But so far the story has effectively been: Thrown into mysterious school with shadows Met 2 new people Went into Labyrinth Beat Labyrinth Got told there are 3 others like this and beating them should unlock the door home. Went into second labyrinth Currently beating second labyrinth. Having not played either Persona 3 or 4 I have no attachment to the characters, meaning most of the dialog means nothing to me. As they can't further develop the characters since this simply acts as a little bit of content within the stories of P3 and P4 nothing happens that I really care for. The characters are simple, their behaviour from the start doesn't change. It might be perfect for someone who loved persona 3 and 4 and wish to see how they interact, but for someone who didn't really play them the lack of character development makes dialog a chore rather than something to enjoy. Hopefully in Persona Q2 they remedy this by actually having a story to the game, not simply trying to exit the school and go home. (Now I know there probably will be some more story regarding Zen and Rei, but so far there's been minimal. In my opinion the game probably would have been far more interesting if they were the main characters, not the P3 or P4 protagonists, with the focus of the game not trying to escape but to unlock their memories.)
WTF!?!? "Some things just go well together.... Peas & Carrots" Wait, really? Peas & carrots go well together? Well that's definitely news to us! Considering like most people (literally EVERYONE I've ever met) I've never liked peas & carrots are "ok" at best! (personally, roasted is the only way they can even be above dull) & peas & carrots together? One dull, bland & not very tasty thing combined with yet another dull, bland not very tasty thing kinda brings common sense in to tell u thats not going to end well! lol. So for an example of 2 things working together, she failed misrebly!
Here lies a species of a rare breed at IGN known as a competent reviewer
very true they didn't even try with Xenoverse and gave pokemon a awful con for to much water on a tropical island based reigon
"I agree with the reviewer." = Competent reviewer.
At least be less predictable about your tedious bias.
I'm laughing as this because 6 years later people were still ragging on IGN 😂

Seriously ...why does it bother that much ?
7.8 is decent, whatever
SilverShion The score is not the problem really...thats whatever. The problem was the review it self. Watch the video and you will see how she made no initiative to explain a elaborate detail on the games new improvements and to why she feels 7.8 was justified.

***** There's time travel involved in Persona Q. Persona 3 cast is living their culture festival while Persona 4 cast is living their own one.
So there will be memory erasing in the end? I'm pretty sure that stuff doesn't work on Aigis. How are they going to explain her memory then?

Anyone notice the Catherine references with the sheep and Vincent figures / statues near the end of the video?
Yeah good reference to Catherine I like it

The game was developed under the EO team, and engine, and it shows. EO is really different to the earlier SMT games, and early Persona.

Did I miss something why do people keep saying too much water and a bad score??
The pokemon OR/AS review gave the game a 7,8 and one of the cons was "Too much water"
Look at IGN (aka team magma) review of Pokemon OR/AS
IGN did something really really stupid when reviewing the latest pokemon game. They gave it a 7.8 because it had "too much water".

Darak Zx
Atlus is Atlus so thats all the explaining needed
Well the general amount of Sales is going to come from Persona fans and Shin Megami Tensei was a big hit on the 3DS, Persona is a subseries of SMT which means there is already a stock of SMT fans on the 3ds not to mention the SMT Devil Survivor games and Devil Summoner (the first in that series to be on the 3ds with DS1&2 on ps2). I really don't see what the confusion is about. SMT has a long history with the Ds series.
IDk Atlus has more games on 3DS.
I still need to finish this game.... Not sure why I stopped, but I really need to get back into it.
A cookie for everyone who caught the Catherine fan service.
I hope I wasn't the only one to notice Rise said potato flavored ice cream.
@ 4.38 catherine reference, freaking awesome.
Nice review!
Glad this scored well :)
Or at least get to the culture festival part which was in September or October.
i love persona 4 and 3, and almost all shin megami tensei games and etrian odyssey games too. persona q is great, on many areas... but i just hope the super difficulty even on risky is not something that will be come a standard in future tittles it was very disappointing, the only reason i ever lose in risky was that i will run out of SP before beating the bosses because they had so much life but they wont do ever enough damage to kill me, actually only once in a while regular shadows were more dangers.. sad...=/
super easy difficulty*
Was that fish inside ice cream that I saw?
Is IGN the only channel to give this game a video review? Guess I'll have to wait for user reviews to come in. Not that this review is bad but I'm not going to base my purchase on it alone.
Minato Arisato? Yes.
on the birght side dosent matter if your main character dies
I liked Etrian Odyssey, really I did, but I remember ranting over the demo for 10 min about the goddamn manual mapping. After a few minutes I became tolerant of it. I really hate the manual mapping system for a persona game though. Auto mapping attempts to help, but it isn't actual auto mapping. It surely doesn't help that your current location cursor takes note of further away walls when your "auto mapping" won't even commit to tracing it in.
Too much JPop 6.8/10
Hahaha
It was a freelancer who review oras
Moderntweety wouldn't be surprised
Okay, my team is gonna be... Yu, Yosuke, Akihiko, Aigis, and Mitsuru!!
Did anyone else notice the Catherine reference at the end?
If i never hear the velvet room theme it will be too soon.
I didn't know it had a first person view when in dungeons that kinda disappoints me
But my real issue with this game is all the voice changes though
Other then that I'm sure ill love it
This will probably be the last game I buy this year, and it will be a great one to go out on.
Should I play this game in easy? I love Persona 4 story when I watched the anime and I do really want to play the games but I can't get my hands on it. I have 2DS and later I'm having a copy of it. I never really played a JRPG so I was worried if this game is too punishing for me.
everyone I heard there was a "flood" at IGN HQ
That Catherine reference at 4:37
hey nice review, coming from IGN really this is a welcomed change of pace.
Considering that I really love Etrian Odessey, I'm probably gonna love this. >w< Plus I love games that have awesome/interesting dynamic characters so....
Now there just isn't enough water!
This one clearly doesn't have that much water...
Hmm... if the pacing is that sluggish then maybe I _will_ play PQ2 on Normal rather than Hard the first time... I've never played an Etrian game though so maybe I should just do that first
I hope I can find this in stores in the UK. Shit's going to be difficult as hell and Atlus hates Europe.
Wow... Did they really just name all the sections of tne review after tracks from the P4 soundtrack....
WHERE'S OUR ETRIAN ODYSSEY NEXUS REVIEW!?!?
I have a question: 60 Hours Gaming? What do you actually do in this time except the first-person-dungeons and battling? I mean in Persona 4 you had all this school-stuff at least...
party interactions, optional boss fights, side quests, and you play the 60 hour story through different perspectives, P3 protag and P4 protag, so to get the complete perspectives of both is about 120+ hours of content
TheCreed1217 Yes, but those side quests and the boss fights are just even more of the battling I said, isn't it?
I mean you just said battling. I don't consider side quests a part of story hours, and story wise its 60 hours long. A persona game is really as long as you make it. If you do everything possible in it, it'll last you a while, and it has good replay value :)
So there wasn't a lot of water was there huh?
Pro's: A good Game
Con's: Fking boring.
I haven't played Persona 3 or 4 and bought it since it is technically still a shin megami tensei game.
But so far the story has effectively been:
Thrown into mysterious school with shadows
Met 2 new people
Went into Labyrinth
Beat Labyrinth
Got told there are 3 others like this and beating them should unlock the door home.
Went into second labyrinth
Currently beating second labyrinth.
In my opinion the game probably would have been far more interesting if they were the main characters, not the P3 or P4 protagonists, with the focus of the game not trying to escape but to unlock their memories.)
was not a fan of the camera and the controls or how I had to map my own path like srly takes the fun out of it
Will buy. But first i need to beat devil survivor. I dont want to quit it. Also hopefully in that time itll go on sale.
No wonder I haven't gotten this yet....still need to finish Etrian Odyssey.
"No Water 10/10" -IGN
should i buy it even though i have never played a persona game in my life
Yes, is a great game on its own
