Redo this song in a while from the pulse 1994 concert High Hopes now you’ll see how they actually perform it live. You will not be disappointed.

Great reaction and knowledge. I love watching the reactions to this song because there is always a moment in the song that you see something turn and pull you in and I think it was here at 5:55 onwards with the guitar and build up. Not sure if you have already seen the pulse concert live version but that one you get to see him with his guitar and it’s just a beautiful rendition. 👍

The guitar solo at the end is done on a lap steel by David Gilmour! Even if you just do it for yourself you need to see the live version from the 1994 Pulse concert to see David play the lap steel solo!!!!! Absolutely a beautiful rendition of this song using a giant gong, the lap steel and other instruments you would not expect!

What really gripped me is the outro he does after the finale of the lapsteel solo on classical guitar since his 2006 solo shows... literally breathtaking, as you hear every pindrop in the smaller audience of e.g. the Albert Hall

The final solo gives me goosebumps every single time. The song is an absolute masterpiece and means more and more to me every year I spend on this planet. You have to listen to the live Pulse version of this, it's incredible. Gilmour has this look on his face as he finishes the final solo that I interpret as him thinking, 'That was perfect, I can't do it better than that.' It's not a look of triumph or glory but one of deep satisfaction.

I never fault anyone with starting with the studio version. Face it, there were probably weeks put into getting that recording just right. Not saying concert versions can’t be great, but I know how to make that judgement better when I’ve heard the original.

IMHO, miamicool666 summed this song up well with a single word. I would go a bit (or a lot) farther and would venture that this song represents a nostalgic and bittersweet longing for a time when the light of youth really was brighter, the grass greener. An unidentified (former?) student has returned to Cambridge (although Ely and its famous cathedral is its stand-in for this video) to reflect on and then release his memories (the white balloons and the sail-kites) back to the schools where he and two other members of PF were also students. (To, perhaps, seed the fertile ground of Cambridge and, thus, to continue the chain of artists?). We also see him rolling, and then dropping, a single bicycle tire.
This moving song is, IMHO, another tribute to founding member of Pink Floyd Syd Barrett, whose stone image (memory) is being carried by his friends and his fellow students. I believe that first person we see, leaning on his car, is the living "ghost" of Syd. (Although Syd was still alive at the time PF's album "The Division Bell" was released, he was no longer in contact with the band, was no longer making music, and had retreated to a very reclusive life back in Cambridge.) Near the end of the video, "ghost" Syd releases his memories and his musical relationships back to the countryside of his youth where they began. The bicycle tire he drops is probably a reference to the song "Bike", written by Syd; that bike is now broken and scattered, just as Syd's mind is irretrievably broken and scattered due to his drug use, which included LSD.
"High Hopes" is just one of many PF tribute songs to Syd, some others being "Wish You Were Here" and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". The character Pink in the PF album "The Wall" is a loose reflection of both Syd and his schoolmate/bandmate Roger Waters.

Pink Floyd invented music induced space travel, inner-self explorarion voyages and here, Time Travel, because this song takes you back, to a better time, if you were lucky enough to have had a happy childhood.
