If you're on the fence about one of these cars I recommend it. I own an 01 530i and I've never driven a car that has such a pleasant blend of slick sporty handling and ride/interior comfort. BMW doesn't make cars like this anymore.
That's awsome to hear about! I'm glad you love and appreciate yours. Around 2000 were really the best years for BMW! They created the E39, E38, E46 but now... Just without soul... Btw, is your 530i a manual or automatic?

That sounds like an awsome car that gets you a lot of fun any joy haha I really hope you keep it for a very long time and give it the love it deserves🙏 But btw, is you 540i a manual or automatic?
I have a 1999 M sport auto 528i. It is a fantastic motor. It looks brand new and it drives like brand new. I am 75 and it is the best car I have owned. For all reasons, so many. I have driven other prestige makes but this is just, a great looking car, fun to drive, reliable, and for the lemonade money paid for it in 2015 I still pinch myself to believe that it looks better than newer models. My son was driving a 60 thousand pounds Volvo, a company car. Extremely nice but my son said Dad the Beemer you have is better to drive and more fun. So I hope I can finish my driving days in this and pass it on to my son.189000 miles to date and a new battery only required 12 months ago. Enjoyed the video with all the models shown. Thanks for posting. Have subscribed. Bodywork in silver and suede seating. Not as cold as leather.
Sir, thanks a lot for sharing your expenrience and the positive feedback! Your E39 really sounds like a great example of an incredible car🙏 It's great to hear that you love it as much as it deserves and hope you keep enjoying it, for as many more years as possible! So I think you are a pretty cool dad! Your son must be glad to have you👍 By the way, suade being warmer than leathet is a good point haha, never thought about warmth for car seats🤔
That's a lovely story, I hope you and your bmw still have a lot of years to live and that your son will still be driving it even when your gone and think of the good ol times ❤️ love from Germany
My wife gave her 1998 E39 AC Schnitzer 540i to our daughter before we migrated to Australia. It has 400,000 kms on it and it still growls. I did 90% of the maintenance. Beautiful powerful car.
That's some impressive milage actually! The are fine in terms of reliability, though they still have some issues... Also props to you, for doing so much yourself! Probably saved a shit load of money haha Giving it to your daughter is also quite a nice Thing to do, though I wonder why you moved to Austria? And what country did you live in before that?

I currently own an '03 540i 6MT and love it. It is my 3rd or 4th E39 and so far it is my favorite. My end game is an E39 M5 one day, but I currently own 3 5 series and I am getting everything I want out of them, so the M5 can wait... 2002 E39 540, 2016 F10 535i M-Sport, and 2010 E60 535i M-Sport.. The E39 is the Ultimate BMW in my opinion, the best Sedan design of all time..
Bro that's fucking crazy! I LOVE it! 540i is the coolest E39 spec (M5 is awsome too but even more unreliable), an E60 is always nice and I really love the F10s! Those are soo underrated too I definetley understand that you get everything you could want out of them so I'm honestley super happy for you my friend. Btw, as just and idea... Maybe get an F10 M5🤔 I'm not Sure tbh but I think they are cheaper that E39 M5s. Also it would be dope to have 2 different era V8 5 series then 🤷♂️

@@tonychamoun2970 that is just amazing. How is reliability going over all those years? Btw, I think the M5 is amazing of course, but the 540i would probably be a smarter decisions. Has a powerful V8 and you can get a nice one for less money than a cheap M5🤷♂️
@@WynterMichey Oh my god man, that's amazing! First of all, your dad has to be cool as a freezer in the snow. And second of all, an E39 M5 as a first car is just sick Congratulations my guy 🙏 How much did He ask you for it? And what kind of work does it need?
Just got a 540i recently it was abandoned and free then I realized it has 102k miles and just needed a fuel pump tires and a normal tuneup and it is beautiful!
As an owner of 540i + manual + LSD from M5, there is one thing I would say if you consider buying E39. ONLY and ONLY if you will fix it yourself. Have place and tools to do so, otherwise it may cost fortune. There is always something to do and labour price is huge comparing to car itself. Many workshops doesnt even want to fix them, many want but arent capable to not fk it and ones who can and should usually are expensive. From Poland perspective, currently decend, healthly 540i is around $10k usd. I spent within 3 years around ~13k usd on mainteanance, mods, repairs and so on and its still far from being perfect, and Im doing like 90% things myself. For people that will give car to mechanic for everything, this car isnt worth it at all. E39 is brilliant car but only if you can live with its problems. Buying parts become bigger and bigger problem every year, a lot parts are stopped being produced by alternative manufacturers. OEM parts can cost 2 kidneys or they aren't available at all anymore.. and thats all just for 540i, for M5 its 500% worse, thats literally hell to maintain. I know guy who has M5 and in the end he bought second one, just to have parts to move when parts that require repair arent available to buy anywhere. I could be continuing that topic for much longer.. just take off pink glasses when you think about this car, otherwise something that should give you fun will become a hell.
First of all, thanks for taking the time to write all of this! And I have to say that I generally agree, that when buying any cheap cars, you should probably be ready to fix some things yourself... Labor prices are really high, especially on BMWs. But it's not really like everything brakes on E39s. They generally still are reliable. But the 540i and M5 are known to have way more issues and of course to be more expensive... I won't say that the other models are without problems, but there certainly are a lot less. Also depending on the milage and previous owners, especially on a manual 540i, it might have been beat up a lot in it's life... They are fast, sound and handle great, are RWD and a lot of fun, so possibly someone didn't treat it well I mean with the LSD in yours, I'd not be suprised if you drift it yourself haha
Thanks a lot bro, I really appreciate the feedback! You literally have the perfect E39 in what sounds like a gorgeous spec 🙏 They really are incredible machines and look amazing... But I gotta ask you... What other cars do you have? 6 are a lot and your E39 is definetly a sign of great taste haha

Absolutly right, their il6s are just awsome! The best thing about those I'd say, is that they make Power reliably. But I gotta say that the V8s sound a bit better
I've had a 03' 530i manual for 7 years/100k miles. despite facing every known issue on the e39, this car is always rewarding to drive and you can never not look back at it.
@@steezye3945 sounds like a fairly pleasing ownership experience haha No issues to need rocket science for, at least 😂 But I'm really glad it's worth the extra effort for you! And that you get your E39 the love and appreciation it deserves 🤝
@@Birl well, it depends. There are some rather common quirks they can have (some cheaper than others) and there is a lot of age related maintnance that comes up at some point in time. So stuff like bushings or seals can just get Bad over the years. So if you get a well maintained one, you will save yourself a lot of money and time (if they were kept up with maintnance). But if you get yourself one in Bad condition, it can get really expensive if you're unlucky...
That's awsome to hear! The 528i is probably the best mix of performance and smart choice haha It's awsome that you like and enjoy it and fl headlights are a great idea! Simple, easy but a very noticable difference 👍 Wish you all the luck you need and all the fun you can get!

Older cars are getting harder to keep on the road. Need bushens for my CL500 but none available at lest to deliver to Northern Ireland. Nothing has been straight forward but better than owning a souless car. The 540i sport is one of the best cars to drive I've ever had, pure smooth power that keeps going, so useful I've lumbers some stuff over the years in it. i was lucky the engine and gear box were rebuilt before I bought it. Munic Legends did the work so it pulls like a train. I did a search anmd there are 5 in the UK and 3 on the road. It is a beautiful car, like I said the interior is next and the seats are looking their age and 180K miles so will get the seats retrimmed with leather not sure to go more darker than the cream leather. I'm sure it will work out keepm it original black matalic and cream leather. The dark gun metal grey head liner is class. Great cars maybe the car enthusiast's woild choose.

Hello i am currently koking for a e39 but the only one within my area and budget is 520i E39 M52. Whats your opinion on it? It will be my first car so i accept all tips, i have nobody to Ask for help close to me so thanks for helping 😊
Hey, I'd already say that you have pretty good taste haha. I actually want an E39 as my first car too👀 The thing with the 520i though is that they just are slower, than for example a 525 or 528. Apart from that, they are great! They are generally very reliable engines and the rest of the car is mostly like in any E39, so still great! So if you don't intend to drive you car rather fast sometimes, a 520i should be absolutly fine. They still handle and drive great, look just as good as the other ones, have the same nice interior and are generally cheaper to run! Especially insurance should be cheaper and you might save money on fuel, as you'd probably drive more responsibly in one haha But does that car come with a manual or automatic transmission? And what actually is your budget? Also if you would actually prefer a different engine (depending on your budget and what you want a car for) you could Look a bit further away from your area and have the car Transported, or just drive it back home. Though you might need help of some friends or family member there. I'm also pretty glad if I can help you! It's fun to share some E39 love 🤝
@@MrPista i am from norway and the range is pretty far lol 100km area, i am buying this from a car dealer tho, so its a bit safer then buying from a stranger at the market place. I want a e39 with better engine but nothing is close so yhe. I have already bought a ford focus and I will prob sell it or trade it in bec it’s slow af and ugly. But I have a budget on 5000$ dollar ish
@@smilinglight5678 hmm, that is complicated... To be honest, I doubt that a 520i would be a lot faster than a focus. Has more Power, but is definetley heavier. But buying from a dealership actually makes sense in Norway, especially becauese of rust! Though you should still have a good Look on any car up there. So I'm not exactley sure what you should do, but a 520i might honestly be too slow for you then... But I mean you could test drive it🤷♂️
@@smilinglight5678 Like MrPista said, rust is gonna be the main issue due to the salt used during winter... unless you're only gonna drive it in the summer and have it like a garage queen during winter. I live in Sweden, and you can't really trust dealers here to have a good grip on the common E39 rust issues. You have to check it yourself very very carefully. The design of the E39 is such that the rust issues on the side skirts/sills and the back jacking points will usually be waaay bigger than what first meets the eye. Meaning, they can look pretty fine on the surface, but even a small rust spot on the sills can imply huge rust holes underneath. You won't know whether or not it's swiss cheese under there unless you check yourself. In bad cases, the jack can go straight through the jacking point if you have to lift the car to e.g. change a tire or a break pad etc. So even if it's from a dealer, make sure to learn about the common E39 rust spots and carefully check all of them yourself. In my opinion, E39s are great cars except for exactly this one issue, and it's very much exacerbated in the Nordic climate due to the heavy salting during winter.
520 has the same build quality. less interior options. Maybe it's a 4 gear automatic? That's dissapointing if that's the case. At my stage in life I find the power is enough (528) because I only need it on the highway (when it gets going it can easily reach from 100-170++) and I feel the engine is a lot easier to maintain and trust for long trips. Handling is the same. It's a smart choice if you don't have a 530 available. I've seen 530 and they're in very poor condition so the lower models in good condition are a much easier choice. I find engine size less important than a perfect body and seats, and no oil/coolant leaks. the rest can be fixed/swapped! Sadly where I am 530s are just abused by their owners and sold for double the price of a 528

Congratulations for owning one🤝 They really are amazing cars! So it's very reasonable to keep the forever... I honestly think that the 530i is the best option amomg the E38s, as they are Reliable, but still powerful and fun to drive! It's very surprising how amazing these cars are to drive. They beat everything newer by a mile. Only car that I think was better to drive was 2020 Volvo S90
Thanks for sharing some of your expenrience! These cars just are awsome in basically every way and just so special 🙏 A newer S90 is a damn high standard to compare the E39 to, but I gotta say, it's a nice example! Really points out the E39s quality, but it's a bit crazy haha
@@MrPista I know, but it's just the way it is in my opinion lol. Currently I have a 2008 E60 and it's a good car too but I just don't like it as much as the E39. I miss my E39 days and I really wanna buy one again. I really want an E38 more but in Finland there is no rust free ones for a decent prize.
@@axuli99 The Thing about that comparison is not that it's really wrong, because the E39 is awsome to drive. But it probably feels better when you love a cars so much. I agree, E60s are good cars for sure, but there is just something about the E39 that makes it nicer and feel better... The E38 is literally a work of art, so I definitly can relate to you wanting one. Btw, for how long did you have an E39 and what happened to it?
@@MrPista I had 2 actually, the first one was supposed to be a temporary cheap car but I really fell in love with it and drove it for 2 years. Just had to be sold for parts/scrap because of rust. The second one, 2001 530D was in really good condition all around with nice options and all. That time I was really looking for a one that I could drive for years. The interior was super rare, mostly the reason I bought that one as i thought it looked so interesting and cool. I think the interior color is called royal green or stone green and it was with leather and wood trim. Also the car itself was Oxford green. Got to enjoy that one for about 7 months only. My little sister totaled it in a crash while borrowing it, wasn't her fault tho as another car banged it up from the passenger front blasting a redlight. Insurance company just paid the money for it as they deemed it unfixable/not worth fixing. 2 weeks after that I got an idea and started planning another E39. I tried to call the junkyard if I could come and tear the interior off for the new car because I fell in love with it so bad but they had already scrapped it lol. So I scrapped the plan in dissapointment and got the E60 after and been driving it since 2020 without a single issue.
@@axuli99 That's what I call a very unique story, kind of sad to be fair... It would be awsome to get another one, but getting one without rust is probably a bit harder up north. So the E60, even though it's less special, maybe makes more sense to have for you. And I mean 0 problems in like 3 years is great haha You shouldn't give up the dream of another E39 or an E38, but I don't think you should let it drag you down. E60 are still super nice cars!
Holy shit bro, that sounds awsome! I mean they kind of have enough power already, but more is always nice 😂 That Extra bit of torque on the low end actually makes a lot of sense for the 530i... So good luck with the build and I hope you enjoy it 🙏
I mean I didn't really know about that, living in Europe yk But it makes sense I guess... Some have rust issues and people who own them often don't sell them. And there are way fewer in the US anyways... So thanks for the info! It's quite unfortunate though Here in Germany, I See a lot of them around. There is a street close to me where literally 4 E39s are parked basically behind Each other, on the side of the road💀 And what feels like every time driving around, I see at least one on the road...
I have since 2009 a 2002 530dA, its perfect engine car but it does not matter becase: rust, rust, rust. My rear lift point is rusted through, so that means my audi a2 will live much longer than e39….So if its older than 20 years you are too late chassis is gone.
Oh man, that sucks... Rust can really do these cars dirty. They gotta be looked after a lot to prevent them from rusting, which can get super difficult... So is it worth it for you to throw money at it to fix it? There are quite some with little or no rust, but it's super important to Check before buying one at any point But to be fair, it lasted you 15 years!
That's awsome! You have a practical and a fun car, so you got it all pretty much haha. Nö reason to want anything else🤷♂️ Btw, are yours manuals or automatics?
Yes! The 530i is pretty Reliable but still quick and fun to drive. And even though a 540i is definetley less reliabile, the speed and Sound might be worth it (still not too Bad in reliability)
That awsome! I'm glad you enjoy it 🙏 The 528 might litterally be the best Option, becauese they are fun but decently economical. I'd assume that they don't have an rust issues in Afghanistan, or am I wrong here? Also do you drive a manual or automatic?
Maybe 😂 You can really find a lot of great Deals here... We have a lot of E39s and I actually spent quite some time the last few weeks looking at prices etc. And I came along a lot of 528i and 530i models with 200-250k km (~120 to 150k ish miles) for 2-4k € and they sold super quickly👀
yeah but please stop runing the suspension and exhaust on those cars. they were born perfect as they are. I rescued one with 20" wheels and put it back to stock and not only it looks better, it also drives better, all day in pure performance and luxury
I absoluteley get your point, but I personally really like the look of them, being slightly lowererd... Sure, it takes away some comfort, but anyways. I definitley agree at the topic of wheels with you! The absolut maximum should be 17" on an E39 and 16" probably Look the cleanest. And the exhaust Thing is a bit complicated... Full Systems or straight pipes are unneccessary I think, but like a decent axle back can Enhance the Sound a little. Without looking out of place or being obnoxious🤷♂️
@@AstralStef I guess it is getting old and the original exhaust is too quiet for your taste. I'm talking about people putting cheap exhausts or delete the cat. I have the chance to have landed a e39 with a quality aftermarket exhaust that is not droning and performs a pure sound.

They are fast, sound and handle great, are RWD and a lot of fun, so possibly someone didn't treat it well
I mean with the LSD in yours, I'd not be suprised if you drift it yourself haha

How expensive are they to maintain?
@@Birl well, it depends. There are some rather common quirks they can have (some cheaper than others) and there is a lot of age related maintnance that comes up at some point in time.
So stuff like bushings or seals can just get Bad over the years.

Thanks for taking the time to share your Story here first of all!
It really sounds like a nice and fun project you have going on there... And I'm sure it's good fun to work on it with your friend!
I think that a cream interior Looks great with Black outside too👍 But you have a lot of options for retrimmed interior colours that Match with the Black, so I'd suggest to keep thinking about it a bit more just in case 🤔

My plan was to use an E39 BMW 5 series as a enthusiast practical daily driver for errands and taking my dog and parents around when needed and then use my MB SL more as a fun weekend sports car. @@MrPista Fuel consumption is manageable and can be very different depending on how you drive ranging from 8-15l/100km. I never had very powerful cars so the 170hp from the 523i are enough for me at least. Could have bit more power in the low rpms but when you rev it up it comes alive nicely!
I actually want an E39 as my first car too👀
The thing with the 520i though is that they just are slower, than for example a 525 or 528.
Especially insurance should be cheaper and you might save money on fuel, as you'd probably drive more responsibly in one haha
But does that car come with a manual or automatic transmission?
Sadly where I am 530s are just abused by their owners and sold for double the price of a 528
I have an 03 540 msport. 220k miles and still going strong. I've had several other newer bmws but the e39 is my favorite.

You said you would get a 530i or 540i ?
Yes! The 530i is pretty Reliable but still quick and fun to drive.
And even though a 540i is definetley less reliabile, the speed and Sound might be worth it (still not too Bad in reliability)
I have a 540 i 2000,sport 127,000 milse,,,very clean..7,000
Ooh that sounds like an absolute dream haha
Great price, amazing car and surely a lot of fun for you👀
Even in Afghanistan i have an e39 528i 97 a great car love it
That awsome! I'm glad you enjoy it 🙏
The 528 might litterally be the best Option, becauese they are fun but decently economical. I'd assume that they don't have an rust issues in Afghanistan, or am I wrong here?
Also do you drive a manual or automatic?
@@MrPista its automatic luckily its in a very good condition and when i findet milage was 85000 in one year of ownership no problem milage is 97200
@@afghanboy103 sounds pretty good! That's really not a lot of milage on a car of this age, so congratulations
But how much did you pay for it? 🤔
@@MrPista 2500$
Hi I have e39 528i cool car
❤
Oh damn that's awsome! They are more than just cool🤝
For how long have you had it so far?
BRO IT MAY BE MORE ECONOMICAL TO SHIP ONE FROM GERMANY TO THE STATES
The exhaust is not perfect but the rest are
@@AstralStef fair point my guy, I agree with you... But I mean most cars don't sound great stock haha
@@AstralStef I guess it is getting old and the original exhaust is too quiet for your taste. I'm talking about people putting cheap exhausts or delete the cat. I have the chance to have landed a e39 with a quality aftermarket exhaust that is not droning and performs a pure sound.
@@captainLoknar my issue is that either the exhaust is a big premium or it’s very cheap, no in between I’m looking for the in between balance 😭
M5 4.8 400hp
Oh shit, what did I say in the video?
Thanks for pointing out my mistake! I honestly appreciate it🙏
God I wish it was cheap
I mean they are👀
Obviously not always in great condition but that's not suprising at that price point. You can also get quite a bit money off by negotiating with the seller a lot of the time.
But in case they are more expensive where you live... Where Do you live?
Got one 4 months ago $930 128000 on the dash
@@mvscenti wtf bro💀 that's a BARGIN!
I knew there are really cheap ones but not like that... Super low milage especially for such a price...
I hope you enjoy it haha
@@MrPista exactly bro, it was a steal. 530i. only problem was the paint which is fixed now 💀
@@mvscenti ay what da hell? The 530i is probably the best trim for actual usability haha
Is it even a manual?
Paintwork as the only issue is not too bad my guy, a couple hundred bucks to make a $930 BMW be great still sounds like an awsome Deal!
Gongratulations 🙏 You are so lucky
Cheap ? You have no idea what you're talking about, this is not a cheap car to maintain, is always those who never owned one who says is cheap but if you want it properly taken care of is really not cheap at all.
To be straight up, I have never owned one so no experience with them... You're right at this point.
But from storys I read and problems I researched, their not too bad in reliability. Of course there are some issues because they are rather old by now, but there aren't too many in general from what I know
@@MrPista Is a 20 year old car, I wouldn't say reliable but sure, is very well documented but you can't call it cheap to maintain, an even well maintained you'll face problems like parts that aren't sold anymore and much more, these were quality cars made to last but they were never cheap, not 20 years ago nor today. They're cheap to buy, expensive to move.
@@robertadrianwayne I have to say that you're making good points here. There always is something that can Happen of course, you're right. And those bills can ad up... Like with a lot of older or used cars in general.
And there certainly are some people with bad experiences. But especially here in Germany, they are very Well known for being quite reliable cars.
And as parts for these cars are not too expensive here, my opinion is probably a bit biased anyways...
Bout a 520d for 500€……
@@arwo1143 That's awsome dude hahah
How many miles has that engine seen? 👀
@@MrPista 205.000
Got it last Monday, already nearly 500km on it from my end
It’s a long commuters diesel…. Purrs like a kitten, but the chassis isn’t in the best shape and it has a little service backlog because he had a new car and didn’t want to pour money into this anymore
I’ll do what needs to be done, it went in today for a new rear tire that had no profile anymore (all 7 other tires are basically new) and an overdue Oil change, and they’re looking at the brakes to see if it needs calipers only or also disks which will be done after I know how expensive it will be together with a couple other things
After that I’ll look how expensive it is to get it through TÜV, it still has it until December, and I only need it until November when I’ll probably get my dads current company lease (2019 Volvo V60)
@@arwo1143 well, that sounds pretty good to be fair, so you got yourself a nice Deal!
Most used cars need some stuff fixed etc so I think you'll be fine🤷♂️
Btw, are you german? Talking about TÜV? 👀
Am hording these cars
Really?? How many have you got 👀
i have one and the electronics are pure bullshit i hate everything about this car and regret buying it
God damn👀 sounds like you got pretty unlucky there... They usually are reliable...
How much did you pay for it? And what condition was it in?
@@MrPista 3000€ and it was in pretty good condition but i also had an E46 that made all kind of problems with the electronics and seals. i know many people with BMWs from E36 to F34 and everyone says that the main problems are the electronics. and they are pretty much useless after 200.000Km because they start leaking from all sides
@@shay-d9210 damn, that sucks to be fair... I never really came across many stories of these issues, so I never knew to much about them.
But seals are common on like any older cars. They just ware out over time. And electrical stuff, especially on more luxurious cars sometimes just mess with themselves somehow...
So I'm honestly sorry for you to have such bad experiences with these cars🙏 Have you maybe got another car that you have a better experience with?
Those wheels are a joke.
Yeah, I'm sorry my guy... It's pretty difficult to find great fotage for a video yk
I don't like these giant ones either, especially on an E39.
I prefer like some 16' ones
@@MrPista It's not that the are giant. It's that somebody lowered the car and gave them enough negative chamber to go under the wheel well arches. It's a joke because anyone who knows suspensions know that it's not going to work when you are rubbing the inner fenders and riding the bump stops.
@@dwightlooi Ah ok, I get what you mean.
It's more just stupid than a joke hahah
I have to say, that I like the look of these cars being slightly lowererd. But it quickly Gets ridiculous and with the chamber not only shit do drive, but also way less safe with less contact to the street.
@@MrPista You should do a vid on the E39 M5... the LAST RELIABLE M5. The E60 S85 V10 all grenaded with or without the SMG -- good luck finding one these days. The F90's S63 Bi-Turbo sucks with its N63 heritage too. The S62 powered E39 was the last robust and reliable M5.
@@dwightlooi I don't really know. The M5 doesn't really fit the cars I normally talk about.
Though I do really like them! But I also heard horror stories about the E39 M5s reliability...
Same with the F10, some say they are Reliable and others say the opposite.
Apart from that, I did a video on all the M5 generations a while back. I'm not saying it was a good Video, but it didn't do well to be honest hahah
