China - Cab Ride in JS Class 2-8-2 (2) - December 2016

- This was my second cab ride of the recent visit to Sandaoling in western China. The train leaves the opencast mining area with its newly loaded train of coal and battles the steep incline out of the mine area, passing an empty train on its way back down to the loading area. We then unload the coal at a transfer station where the coal is crudely broken down into smaller pieces and loaded on to lorries. Experiences like this are now in their last few months. This is absolutely the final chance in the world to witness a steam locomotive being driven hard in a genuine industrial situation. This sequence is the end of my visit to Sandaoling and also the end of a whole era in steam power. For those who can afford it - you have just a few months to see this spectacle. amazing how much work goes into keeping those machines running.
They're complicated machines and take quite a bit of maintaining .... but I'm bewildered by a computer !!
fascinating to see it first hand. pity the poor bugger on that conveyor break up the big bits! Thanks for sharing a different and disappearing world

They're powerful machines and do sound great. You're right the whistles are good too ! They're still working in January 2018 too - it's just over the border from Russia !! Make a visit !!

Yes. Sandaoling is now the very last regular industrial steam working in the world. It's due to finish in September this year and that'll be the very end of over 200 years of steam history. A sad day ...... Andy

Not very often. But while we were there on this visit there was a group arrived from Taiwan and, even more surprising, two young lads (about 20) from Xian in China.
If there were trains in Mordor, it would look like this.

You should try operating a hand held camcorder on the footplate of an industrial steam loco running on temporary track in a coal mine ------ it's not easy !!! Andy

There's really nothing quite like the sound of a steam locomotive working hard.
Dissapointing steam horn. I do like a grimy looking steam loco though.
These JS's (and all other Chinese steam locos) have these horns AND a US style chime whistle which sounds fantastic. Unfortunately, they usually choose to use the horn. I'm not sure why! To appreciate the whistle please take a look at 0:41 - th-cam.com/video/xPJx24HDOW0/w-d-xo.html
